Having been an aficionado for nearly two decades, I will alternate instruction between the two styles (Delta or acoustic country blues, and Chicago or electric urban blues) while I introduce some key musicological information about relevant figureheads and their contributions to the form (ie Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters).

Nearly all blues is based on one of two progressions - the eight-bar and the twelve-bar. You will learn both of them right off the bat before beginning the practice of soloing techniques. I will also share information about the significance of the form itself (that ALL forms of American music are rooted in it) as well its African origins.

Above all, remember one key thing - playing the blues is not meant to bring you further down the hole. It's meant to lift you out of it.

About Samuel
I've been a performing singer-songwriter since 1993. My influences include Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello, Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, and Richie Havens. I've been teaching private lessons since 2011 and I tailor my lessons according to the individual needs of my students. Everyone learns at a different pace and in a different way. My objective is to provide instruction that both challenges as well as respects your rate of progress.

I'm a primarily self-taught musician. Although I impart knowledge of scales (the major and the blues ones specifically) and the theory behind them (both of which I learned from formal instruction) as a central component of my curriculum, the bulk of my knowledge came from listening to and imitating delta blues artists such as Robert Johnson and Mississippi John Hurt both of whom displayed
remarkable intricacies in their art.

We'll begin with the major scale in the key of C (as seen in the video) which you'll hear me indicate as being the white keys on the piano. Afterwards, you'll learn a spiritual and an American standard with just the three major chords comprising that key (C, F, and G7). The key of D will be taught in a very similar manner (a scale and then three chords) before the blues is introduced.

Though you will have learned to play campfire standards in fewer than eight lessons, I'm a believer in imparting the roots of the form and not just its recognizable elements. The blues (particularly the form originating from the Mississippi Delta) is the foundation of ALL American music. Therefore, I consider it essential to the curriculum.

I've always found E to be the most blues-friendly of all the keys. We'll be spending more than twice the amount of time we will have spent in C or D learning multiple progressions and chord formations in E. Afterwards, you'll be introduced to the blues scale and receive the basis for playing lead (solos). You'll learn some rudimentary jazz within this segment of the process as well.

Samuel has been a top notch teacher and is very patient with my son. My son always tells me that he's inspired after every lesson. So much so that another one of my other sons has observed these lessons and is interested in taking lessons from Samuel as well.

Over the past 20 years I have taken guitar lessons twice. The episodes were separated by 15 years. I was engaged and even intense about learning. Both times ended in frustration and more important, failure. After only 5 lessons with Samuel Bean, I have learned to strum chords in time, learned several scales, 12 bar and 8 bar patterns and a bit of music theory. The result is playing to a level that provides personal satisfaction. I look forward to playing. So for you beginners and frustrated musicians out there, you know who you are, give it a try. I predict success.

I have had known Sam for many years. I am friends with his parents and his sister Emmy, also a very talented musician.
Although I don't live near him, unfortunately, when he visits NYC I make it a point to check in with him and ask for his his advice on my rather limited guitar skills. I always come away from our sessions feeling much better about my playing and can see what an improvement he has made for me. He is very patient and so eager to help, even a beginner like myself. i just wish he lived closer!

Learn the blues form and its variations. And what better way to do this than play your favorite blues tunes. We will explore a variety of chord voicing, rhythm variations, improvisation, and varied blues styles.

About Josh
Hi there! My name is Josh. I have been playing guitar for the majority of my life and have been teaching since 2010. I have a music degree with a focus on classical guitar and I play rock, blues, jazz, folk, pop, and just about anything you want to learn. Whether your goals are to strum and sing, improvise, learn classical guitar or rock, or understand music theory, I want to help you reach them. Music is my life and I love being able to share every bit of knowledge I have with my students. It is a blast to watch my students progress and get excited about guitar.

As a player, I learned what to avoid and what to utilize in order to accelerate my playing as quickly as possible and you will save time and limit frustration with my methods. I will teach you how to practice, which is the single most important part of learning. Effecti
ve practice yields great results for everyone. Often teachers will only explain the "how"; I teach the "how" and the "why" so you will have ample knowledge to grow and explore on your own.

*** Lesson Details ***
I will teach you to play the songs/styles that you love. I provide my own transcription of each song and explain and demonstrate each element. Learn how to read music, create rhythms for strumming, build your chord knowledge, improvise, train your ear and understand song structures. We will coordinate a lesson plan that will fit your schedule and accelerate your learning.

I keep my lessons fun, upbeat and with a focus on each student's goals. I ensure full comprehension of all subjects covered, and make sure that each student is challenged and learning constantly.

My main word of advice is "Be patient." Learning an instrument takes time, practice and is a gradual process that is rewarding beyond words. Acknowledge every little improvement in your playing because that is what we want. I recommend a minimum of 2-3 separate 30 minute practice sessions. There's no reason to put it off any longer. Let's get started!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Plenty of parking, music stands, amp, effects pedals, extra picks, tuners, a comfortable setting, great attitude, and seating for parents. Students only need to have their guitar and a notebook.

*** Specialties ***
*Teachers marked as a Student Favorite have taught a minimum of 25 lessons and have received the highest feedback rating from students.

My experiences with Josh have been great. I have played guitar for many years, but my approach has always been lacking in relation to technique. Josh has helped me form a better mechanical understanding of my posture and movements. The adjustments he has helped me make have resulted in less stress on my fingers, wrist, and arms. He has always been thoroughly prepared for lessons. I would absolutely recommend Josh, especially for new musicians who want to learn their instrument in a fundamentally sound and detail oriented manner.

Been a student of Josh's for a few months now and feel very fortunate to have found him. His attention to detail, continuity between sessions, and obvious broad knowledge base are a few of the elements making this a very rewarding learning experience. I am learning to read music, understand music theory, and develop technique. I have very much looked forward to each lesson which Josh takes the time and effort to build upon with clear assignments and follow up. Josh is highly personable, professional and supportive. I highly recommend Josh.

Get happy, play the blues! All the different styles can be explored. We'll start with simple blues scales and work towards understanding why certain notes go with certain chords. From there, improvisation and comping get so much easier.

Heading into my first class with Tim, I had almost no musical experience (at least for the last 15+ years). In a very casual way, he was able to get a sense of where I was and where he should start with my instruction.

I was very reluctant to take lessons at first, but my wife got me started with Tim and it was really worth it. He was accommodating to my relatively slow speed of learning and easily adapted to my own musical preferences and interests.

His studio is a great space and is located within a really cool, historic building. The sound is fantastic and it's a comfortable space to practice in.

I highly recommend Tim for lessons - especially for adults who may not be able to dedicate hours a day to practicing. I took lessons weekly for three months and I got a great foundation for practicing. Once my life settles down a little, I definitely hope to go back.

At the age of 12 Marcin began learning guitar by himself. Beginning the educational process through tabs and other internet resources available to him. While in college Marcin began studying classical guitar, composition, theory and history and in 2012 received a Masters from Hunter college in performance and composition. It is in college that he progressed the most technically. As a guitarist he is versatile as he feels comfortable reading music, playing jazz standards, funk, blues, rock, and improvising freely
During his first few years in college he began playing and trying other instruments such as piano, bass guitar, bongos, and to this day, continually learns and studies diverse instruments

As a composer, he has composed music for Trios, Quartets, Quintets, Sextets, Orchestras of various instrument permutations, Choirs, and also
a short opera.

Marcin has been teaching since 2010 and greatly enjoys seeing students grow and improve. He breaks down all his concepts in great detail, making them easy to digest and comprehend.

I have always wanted to play the guitar but felt too intimidated. A friend told me about TakeLessons and I chose Marcin because he seemed to have a lot of different experiences with music.

Marcin was extremely professional and nice and made me feel at ease. He made it easy to ask questions and explained things really well for me. I took five lessons with him (I've been traveling and haven't been back yet) and was able to play a few songs. What I really like was Marcin's enthusiasm, which, for me, is really encouraging. He was interested in my goals and kept them in mind with each lessons. I could tell that he was preparing each lesson just for me and based on my progress and I felt that I could be honest with what I was doing. Totally recommend Marcin for lesson!

Marchin has prepared a lot to satisfy my goal and he teaches me how to practice independently in the future. So, I can keep improving my guitar skills myself without the lesson.
More over, his lesson is pretty casual and funny. I feel comfortable with it.

All in all. For me, as a starter. He's a good guitar teacher.

It’s always a very special time a guitar student wants to learn about the blues. As an improviser, this is one of my favorite topics to teach.
We will listen to the great blues guitarists, discussing their individual sound and technique. Lots of time will be spent learning scales and basic harmonic principles. Most importantly though, we will jam! It’s not easy at first, but I promise to keep the vibe easy-going and positive.

About David
My name is David and I'm a professional musician who just moved to North Austin. I came from Cincinnati, where I went to the University of Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music, taught dozens of students at all levels and played regular gigs every weekend. I have been teaching for over fifteen years, and I'm looking to get a few new students.
I teach guitar, piano, bass guitar and even upright bass. If it's a tutor you are looking for I can also teach music theory and appreciation. I have a knack for teaching young people, probably because I was young when I started my musical journey. I've been very successful at inspiring a student's love of music and instilling the patience required to take on the challenge of playing an instrument.
The first thing I like to do is get to know you, the music you enjoy and your goals. In a way, I l
ike to begin by letting the student lead.
In addition to learning from you, I intend to present you with new information, to try and broaden your musical tastes and teach you how to be an active listener.

Steel string, Spanish and electric

About Darrell
Why these lessons are different:
- Formally trained conductor/composer/producer
- Individual or group session options including full band production
- A long roster of satisfied clients
- Broad base of musical styles (rock, classical, jazz, blues, metal, bluegrass, folk, theater, big band, symphonic, pop, punk, country, march, gospel, avant-garde...)
- Over 20 yrs teaching experience and work with recognized professionals including work in some of the top-rated private schools in the United States
- Over 30 years performing experience

Instrument-specific instruction:
- Voice
- Guitar [Spanish, acoustic, electric]
- Electric Bass
- Piano/Keyboard
- Woodwinds [specializing in saxophones]
- Percussion
- Brass & Bowed Strings [performance preparation only]

My process is based on (but does not adhere strictly to
) the Classical approach to Western tonal harmony and asks that the students develop certain fundamentals of technique and theory. In my experience, this structure creates the strongest foundation for pupils to build the rest of their musical lives on, whether professionally or solely for personal enjoyment. All of my students are on the fast track to studying music theory. Whatever level they are at when I start with them, I guide their efforts into bringing the students up to a certain level of comprehension regarding the mathematical aspects of music and how it relates to their instruments. This understanding of theoretical principles of sound allows the students to play any style of music they wish, no matter how their tastes may change throughout their lives.

Curriculum Gradation:
Elements of rhythm
Elements of pitch
Elements of dynamics
Elements of articulation
Reading/Writing notation
Tone development
Finding/Expanding your range
Dexterity, speed, and accuracy
How to project
How to advance to the next level
Music theory

My 16 year old son loves his lessons with Darrell and looks forward to them every week. He'd been taking guitar lessons elsewhere that were okay-ish, but this is so much more. Darrell is great, not only does he get along with and make my son want to learn, but at the same time they are working on voice, he is also teaching keyboard and working on the guitar! I've taken a couple of lessons from Trevor so far and they have been awesome. I've taken lessons from about 7 or 8 instructors in my lifetime and he is definitely one of, if not the best.
The thing that makes Trevor stand out to me is that he took the time to get to know what I wanted to learn and to figure out how I like to learn. He comes prepared to the lessons with material, answers any questions I have during the week by email and has worked with me to develop a specific education plan to meet my goals.
I suggest taking a trial lesson with this guy to see if you're on the same page. I am definitely not going anywhere else while I live in Austin.

I love teaching guitar, been at it for a decade now giving lessons to many a satisfied student! Lessons cater to the individual's musical preferences. We can cover music theory, rhythm, ear training, proper technique, songwriting/composition, and most importantly whatever songs or styles you want to focus on. About Dan
I studied guitar for 7 years through private instruction from a great teacher who not only taught me guitar and music theory, but taught me to teach it. I eventually began instructing alongside him at the music store where I learned, accumulating over 30 students, ranging in age from 10 - 70 (never too late to start!). I think what I love most about teaching is reliving the excitement of learning all over again with my students. Music is a rewarding venture, well worth the trip! I have been playing and recording professionally for 30+ years, to include 21+ years in the US Navy Music Program/Navy Band where I performed in ~60 countries world wide. I hold a bachelor's and master's degree in Music Theory/Composition and Jazz Studies, and I studied with jazz guitar legend Jimmy Bruno. I have taught guitar privately, at the community college level, and have five years experience teaching guitar, jazz improvisation, jazz combos, contemporary music ensemble (rock/top 40), and big band jazz ensembles at the Armed Forces School of Music and Naval School of Music. Additionally, my reading/sight-reading skills are outstanding, and I have many musicals under my belt in the pit orchestra. I have the prerequisite skill to teach you how to play any style, read musical notation, and studio record.

About Geordie
My skill-set and industry expertise are comprehensive and up-to-date. I make it my top priority to see that my instrumental performance and pedagogy is executed well and
efficiently. My career has also seen its share of achievements; while working as a Navy Musician, I became one of only 25 Bandmasters/commissioned officers in the Navy Music Program Navy-wide. Furthermore, my concurrent work throughout my career as a private, freelance musician has yielded two recordings as a leader, and my becoming an Endorsement Artist for Heritage Guitars in 2001.

During my time working at the Armed Forces School of Music, as Jazz Guitar, Jazz Improvisation, Jazz Combo, and Jazz Big Band instructor, I learned a great deal and achieved a number of goals. One of my highest achievements was earning the Master
Training Specialist designation for excep
tional performance as an instructor in a record 4 months. This typically takes 1-3 years to attain. Earning this designation led to my earning 5 Meritorious Commendation Medals and 4 Navy Achievement Medals to date,
which in turn led to the best trained Navy Musicians graduating from the Armed Forces School of Music during my tenure. In my recent capacity as Director, Navy Band Great Lakes, I was able to significantly expand my skill-set.

My responsibilities for programming music and managing travel for a concert band, parade band, ceremonial band, Dixieland band, jazz ensemble, jazz combo, brass quintet, woodwind quintet, and a blues band caused me to develop my musical knowledge across all genres, as well as my ability to manage large sums of money. I've
been stationed here since 2014, and I work regularly as a jazz guitar leader and sideman on the Chicago gig scene. Upon my retirement from the Navy Music Program in 2018, I will remain in Chicago and devote the full entirety of my efforts to performance, pedagogy, and recording as a private citizen-musician.

I have held a SECRET clearance for 21+ years. That is the most intense background check anyone can get, which is why I passed on the Take Lessons background check.

Currently available for tours, lessons, recording, and live performances.
