Shannon is an active musician, who has been featured as a soloist, and in the flute and woodwind sections with various orchestras, chamber ensembles, opera orchestras and musical theatre within the United States, Italy, and Mexico. She is presently Principal Flute of the Baytown Symphony, Director of the Da Capo Chamber Ensembles, and is a substitute musician with the Orquesta Sinfnica
de Monterrey, Symphony of Southeast Texas, and Opera in the Heights.

Shannon has been a faculty member at various colleges, is currently Adjunct Professor of Music at Brazosport College, and also has an active private studio, Leigh Studios. She is the College Music Society South-Central Regional President; and is an Advisory Board member for the Houston Flute Club.

Shannon received her Masters of Music degree in Performance from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. She also studied at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, and received her B.A. degree in Performance, and B.S. degree in Music-Business from Winona State University, and has studied with world-renowned instructors.

Shannon has received grants for her work, from the Minnesota State Arts Board, American Federation of Musicians, Rome Festival Orchestra, and the Winona Music Guild, and was the 1997 recipient of the Vivian Menees Nelson Music Award.

Shannon is also a sponsored triathlete and trainer/coach/race director, and gives workshops on the importance of healthy living, nutrition and exercise for musicians. She is a board member for The Lake Charles Triathletes. And she is a strong advocate for music, health, and triathlon. I am pretty easy going. I want you to feel comfortable and at ease, but we do need to focus and can have fun doing it. :)
I utilize various methods for each instrument, which is determined by the students learning style and ability; needs, so this can change as time goes on (not sticking to one particular publishers materials). I have done (and continue to do) extensive research into materials available for each instrument I teach, and supplement with my own, to utilize the best out there for "YOU" for the best possible progress. While ensuring an extremely well-rounded musical education, so you can progress at the best possible rate. Since each student's potential is different, each will progress differently. This is also determined by your dedication to daily practice (the more you practice, the quicker you will progress & the more accomplished you will become). I don't accept schedule-as-you-go students.

Studio Policy:

Regular practice: Students are required to practice 5 days a week. The more you practice, the better prepared you are for the lesson. The length of each daily practice session depends on the age or level of the student. Minimum daily practice requirements by age are:

Ages 4 ~ 10/ beginners: 30 minutes
Ages 10 ~ 14/ intermediate: 45 minutes
Ages 14 ~ 18/ advanced: 60 minutes and more

Regular attendance to lessons: I want you to have correct music reading, playing, and good posture, and these cannot be achieved without regular guidance by the teacher. Regular attendance to lessons also insures that no change of schedule will be made to yours because of someone else’s lesson cancellation.

Hsin-Jung has been teaching and performing in both Taiwan and the U.S. for years. She is a patient, professional music instructor, and would like to bring the joy of classical music to all students.

[Biography]

Hsin-Jung T., a native of Taipei, Taiwan began her piano studies at the age of five, and composition studies at 18. She attended the Hua-Kang Art School in Taipei, where she majored in piano performance. In 1996 she received a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Music Theory and Composition from the Taipei National University of the Arts, Taiwan, where she studied with Nan-Chang Chien. Hsin-Jung then came to the United States in the fall of 1997 to study at the Aaron Copland School of Music, Queens College of City University of New York (CUNY), where she received her Master of Music Degree in 1999 while studying wit
h Bruce Saylor. In 2000, she studied at the PhD-DMA program in music composition at the CUNY Graduate Center, where she is studying with Tania Leon and Bernadette Speech.

Through her involvement in programs such as the Taiwan-Japan Exchange Concert “Euterpe Spring ‘99”, conductors Sung Su Jeong, Chun-Fung Lee, and Lance Inouye as well as the Juilliard String Ensemble, the Contemporary Chamber Orchestra of Taipei, and others have performed Hsin-Jung's compositions in Japan, Taiwan, and the United States. In May 2000 Hsin-Jung held a program of her chamber music at Weill Recital Hall, Carnegie Hall. Among her recent works are two film collaborations, Poetry of A Painter, a clarinet solo piece composed for a short film on the life of the artist Fernando Gerassi; the score for Allatonceness, a multimedia performance where the composer also conducted; music design and improvisation for a documentary film Turning Japanese; music for Palace of Loneliness, a play by Dorothy Tan, produced by MultiStages, Inc. and HERE Theatre for the Performing Arts in New York; The Music Composition Award for Capturing The Spirit of the promotive film from Asian American/ Asian Research Institute in New York (2002); and the score for a documentary film Ocean and People produced by Civilization Explorer Association [CEA] (2005). In 2006 Hsin-Jung was invited as a guest composer and held a solo composition recital at Tarrant County College South Campus, Fort Worth, Texas.

In 2008, Hsin-Jung relocated to Houston, where she has been actively contributing her compositions, as well as performing as an improvisational artist.

*** Lesson Details ***
I am patient, and detailed. High concentration and certain skills are necessary in learning classical music; thus, I will be focus on build up student's concentration, fingering skill (writing skill in composition), and understanding of music. Students will learn how to play in a beautiful tune, how to "listen" with both ears and heart, and how to concentrate on what they are doing, and most important -- enjoy what they are playing, and what they are composing!

Music Education is incredibly important, and the field
I hold dearly to my heart. Music is my passion in life,
and it is why I wake up in the morning. Music can enrich
someone’s life, whether it is simply listening to a piece
of music, or studying an instrument for one’s lifetime.
Studies have shown that music education can and has
increased intellectual skills, especially in mathematics and
reading. When learners are motivated and very studious
in music education, many of these students become
doctors, engineers, teachers, and other highly-intellectual
professions.
In conclusion, an education and especially a music
education is so important for the emotional and intellectual
development of a human being.
Music is an excellent medium for collaborat
ion in which
students can grow and excel as individuals. Choir, band,
orchestra, and various chamber groups can spark a child’s
interest, as well as interact with other peers in a positive
environment.
A student can feel a great sense of accomplishment and
learning through the study of music. After weeks, if not
months of rehearsal and practice, the student will then
have the privilege of performing in public. The teacher’s
role in this factor is so crucial in that the teacher needs
to be very experienced in the field, and also has to have a
passion for what he or she does.
Studies have shown that the study of music greatly
enhances brain power. Test scores are greatly increased,
especially in the areas of math and reading. Studies have
also shown that students who study music are motivated
to achieve in life. Many music students go on to become
professionals such as doctors, lawyers, and teachers.
Some music students even become leaders of nations,
such as our past president Bill Clinton.

Whether the lesson is 30 min. up to an hour, the format is the same: The student first reviews the piece(s) of music and materials from the lesson last week. I'm always emphasizing retention and recall. Next we start on new information and new piece(s) of music. For the remainder of the lesson we do theory and written work, then conclude with older pieces (usually the student's choice).

Twenty five years of experience working with students of all levels and ages has shaped me into the teacher I am today. Although I do tailor my sessions to suit the individual student, here are some expectations you can have of me.
Beginning students up to age 11 typically begin with the Bastien method. This curriculum is great at introducing interval recognition. I supplement this with fun pieces from Alfred, where students can strengthen sight reading skills. Flashcards are also used as reinforcement.
Older kids and adults will begin with Alfred's adult course and progress quickly into independent playing.

For all ages - After the student has reached a level of more independent playing, the student/parent will help select the direction in which we progress. Classical music, composition, and popular music are just a few of the possibilities!

All lesson books and materials are provided by me and are included in the cost of lessons. Students are welcome to provide additional ...

I have been teaching piano to students of all ages since 1992, both to individual students and groups. I taught with the Music Learning Center of Michigan. I have been a music teacher and choir director for a number of years as well. For eight years I have played the organ and piano for Church worship.

Music should be appreciated and enjoyed. Lessons should be fun without sacrificing quality. This is the approach I offer to students. I focus on teaching independence through music theory and sight reading. I have been teaching this subject for over 13 years. The main curriculum for beginners is Alfred's Basic Piano Library. There are three beginner levels (beginner, late, adult) and one will be selected after the first meeting. For non-beginning students, the course of study will be developed based on past experience, current abilities, and goals. It is not necessary to know how to read music at the first lesson for beginners. However, learning to read is a part of subsequent lessons. Music is not learned "by ear." A certain amount of theory will be a part of every lesson just as technique and repertoire. Students should come to the first lesson prepared to discuss their background & goals and the plan of their course of study.

About Troy
Composer Troy W. graduated from the New England Conservatory, earning his Bachelors, Masters (cum laude) and Graduate Diploma while studying with mentor Malcolm Peyton. After spending a year studying with Lukas Foss in Boston, Mr. W. moved to Houston in 2001 where he continued graduate studies at Rice University's Shepherd School of Music.

During his time as a teacher with the Michael P. Hammond Preparatory Program at Rice University's Shepherd School of Music, Troy taught classes in music fundamentals and music theory for pre-college students. He has also served on the faculty of the Summer Institute for Piano teaching courses in Form & Analysis for pre-college students.

Troy also has maintained a private studio, tutoring and teaching private lessons in composition, ear training, voice, piano, literature, and history for over ten
years. Students who have studied with him come from a wide range of backgrounds with different goals. Those who have continued with musical studies in college have consistently placed out of at least the first two semesters of music theory and achieved advanced placement in their chosen fields of study. Those who chose a different path continue to benefit from the education and training they received from taking music lessons.

*** Lesson Details ***
There is no "standard formula" to lessons. Each student has their own unique background, needs, and goals. Lessons tend to be somewhat casual but are structured in such a way as to meet the unique requirements of the student.

To accomplish your goals, there are a few requirements and basic expectations that the student and parent must meet.
The first is practice. Students are expected to practice daily for at least the length of their lesson time. This, above all else, is essential to progress. It is also expected that a parent will attend lessons for students who are too young to drive themselves here. It's important for a parent to guide the student's practice time (particularly for younger students) to ensure that the most is gained from it. This is why I ask that a parent observe lessons.
Each student or parent should bring to each lesson a notebook, pencils (with erasers). The notebook will be used to record notes about each lesson, homework, practice advice, etc. Pencils (not pens...nobody's perfect!) are used by composers to record their creations and performers to mark their music. Both of these essential practices are subject to changing thought and must be open to change. So no ink, please!

Performers: It is not necessary to know how to read music at the first lesson for beginners. However, learning to read is required for subsequent lessons and will be a large focus for all non-readers. Lessons are not learned "by ear." A certain amount of theory will be a part of every lesson just as technique and repertoire. Concerning repertoire, it will be selected based on the student's learning needs but also with their input. The main emphasis on performance lessons, however, will be technique and reading. Students should come to the first lesson prepared to discuss their background & goals and the plan of their course of study.
Note: Voice students must be at least 16 years of age.

Composers: Just as with performers, it is not necessary to know how to read music at the first lesson. However, learning to read is required for subsequent lessons. Many young composers have great ideas but can only hear them in their heads or play them on an instrument. Lessons will allow you to obtain the skills to write them down with greater speed, accuracy, and clarity. More advance students will also include exploring a wider range of harmonic languages, advanced notation, instrumentation, orchestration, and aural skills. Students should come to the first lesson with examples of their work, either written, notated, or recorded in a digital format. They should be prepared to discuss their background & goals and the plan of their course of study.

IMPORTANT NOTES:
• To reschedule a lesson, more than one day notice is required.

• Make up lessons must be scheduled before the next regular lesson.

• A make up lesson cannot be scheduled in place of a regular lesson.

• If, for any reason, two 30-minute lessons are scheduled one right after the other, they will be charged as two 30-minute lessons, not one 60 minute lesson which is a different rate.

• If, for any reason, two 45-minute lessons are scheduled one right after the other, they will be charged as two 45-minute lessons, not one 90 minute lesson which is a different rate.

So far, I look forward to each lesson! Troy is very kind, yet very helpful and has helped me target on my personal goals with opera while also learning more each time! I highly recommend him. It doesn't matter if you have no experience in voice or only experience in voice ( as my experience is theatre and musical theatre), he is patient in helping you achieve the goals set. I cannot wait to continue lessons with him!

Paul is an amazing teacher and mentor. Today we tackled harmonies while recording and it was so special to me. Paul is dedicated to his craft and his students. Jonathan received his training at Houston Baptist University in 2016 where he received a degree in Music Education. Although you probably won't recognize the name of the small Bible College from which I received my degrees, I can assure you I received a well rounded education in both music and education. I began learning piano at about 8 years old, and for the past 10 years I have taken lessons from a master teacher, who understands not only the ins and outs of the technical side of playing the piano, but also what it takes to develop the musicality of a student. My voice teachers and choir directors have also had an excellent balance of technical skill and musical sense. Everyone has unique needs and desires regarding an education in music. That is why I teach each student individually to help them achieve their goals. Just because I don't have a set methodology, however, doesn't mean that I teach chaotically. I balance the need for order and discipline with freedom of musical expression.

Out of personal experience I would like to say that Timothy Stabler is clearly an excellent music teacher. He is very patient, has a very high music-I.Q. and works with you according to your capabilities, learning abilities and own desire to progress. He is also an excellent tenor and pianists, very learned and versatile, and a great colleague and friend!

Studio Policy:
-Regular practice: Students are required to practice 5 days a week. It is an important for steady progress.
The length of each daily practice session depends on the age or level of the student. Minimum daily practice requirements by age are:
Ages 4 ~ 10 (beginners): 30-50minutes
Ages 11 ~ 14 (intermediate): 50-90 minutes
Ages 15~ Adult (advanced): 60-120 minutes
-Students should have neat and trimmed nails in each lesson.
-Student should prepare a notebook, a pencil, and eraser in each lesson.
-Parents should check and support regularly to the student's practice.
I have more than 10 years teaching experiences. Regular lessons to goal: I teach a good posture, sight-reading, transposing (modulations), ,techniques, artistry. These cannot be achieved without regular guidance by the teacher.

-Regular attendance at lessons insures that no change of schedule will be made to yours ...

Born and raised in South Korea, Ahyeon became fascinated with classical music through CD’s and, at the age of six, began piano lessons. She later earned a bachelor's degree in piano performance at Sookmyung Women's University, a master's degree in piano performance pedagogy at Arizona State University, and a DMA in solo performance, also at ASU, where she studied with Steinway Artist Walter Cosand. Ahyeon was granted a Special Talent Award at ASU, and won second prize at The American Prize, second prize at the Golden Classical Music Awards International Competition, second prize at the New York Artists International Competition, third prize at the I Future Stars International Piano Competition, second prize at The American Protégé International Piano and Strings Competition, third prize at the International London Grand Prize Virtuoso Com
petition, and third prize at Haneum Music Competition in Korea. She has performed in the Scottsdale Center For The Performing Arts, the Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix, and the Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, and various other venues. She plans to continue her performance, recording, and teaching career featuring the music of Walter Saul and other composers.
