About Neil
I am a music educator of 13 years: I have taught both middle school band and choir to at-risk youth, as well as elementary music at a private Christian academy. My principal instrument is the saxophone (which I began playing in 1990), and I play many other instruments. As for my formal education: I received the Bachelor of Music Education degree in 2005 from Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey; and the Master of Music Education degree from the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA, 2010).

*** Lesson Details ***
My goal is to create life-long musicians...
I focus on the needs and interests of my students, thereby representing all musical genres and including all cultures.
My lessons are structured into activities that incorporate various aspects of music appreciation:
Music theory, music history, music technology, perfor
mance practice, etc. (making such lessons comprehensive)

*** Studio Equipment ***
Everyone needs their own instrument. In my studio, I have to keyboards side-by-side so that the student can both see and hear what I am teaching without ever swapping seats. As for percussion, my practice pad station serves for warm-up rudiments, whereas I have 2 drum-sets facing each other so that again, students can both see & hear what I am doing without needing to spend lesson time switching seats. For all other instruments, I recommend buying new for any brand that is not among the top 3 brands for that instrument...this ensures a working instrument in which to learn from and practice on without necessarily spending top dollar.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I always bring my instrument, metronome, tuner, music stand and stand for my instrument, including lesson materials and supplies.

*** Specialties ***
All genres, all styles & all cultures! I teach students of all ages--mostly at my home studio, but I also travel to students' homes, churches, and, as an alternative during the Summer only, I am willing to meet with students in the Practice Rooms in the Fine Arts Building at UTSA.

I studied classical percussion in college and then specialized on drums at the Drummers Collective in New York City. I have toured with bands and played many times in front of crowds of more than 25 000 people. I have TV experience as well. I also have worked as a session drummer on several records for big labels (BMG and Sony Music among them). I work as a producer and my approach to teaching comes from my love of Music in general. I have been a drums instructor for more than 30 years and my students always get the gigs. I speak English and Spanish. My teaching style is fun and has a very clear outline, remaining flexible within it. I keep learning and practicing every day, and am very open to having fun together while learning. If you practice, the results are shown on every lesson and you will really notice it!

**
We start by learning how to Play, reading is not the first approach, but will be learned around the 3rd month . Everyone can do it and if you feel you can't, I'll prove otherwise during the first lesson. Afterwards we practice simple techniques and start with simple independence exercises, which feel great. You will be playing a beat with simple independence the first time we try it, which can be during the first lesson and no longer than three lessons afterwards. As you progress with the independence in rock style, we will work in other styles like funk, jazz, Latin, odd meters and African and the main focus will be that you become a great drummer. Whether you are aiming to become a pro or playing as a hobby, you will find great value in these lessons.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I have 11 drum sets, recording gear, guitar and bass amplifiers and a pa system.

*** Travel Equipment ***
His own set. I could also rent them a set if needed, but having their own set is better for me. Sometimes I rented a set to my students in order for them to decide if they wanted to buy one.

*** Specialties ***
I use the Drummers Collective approach. I teach styles such as rock, jazz, funk, Afro-Cuban, pop, Brazilian, etc...

My 12 year old daughter has a learning disability and a noise anxiety but really wanted to take drum lessons. She was extremely nervous and shy at first but Alfredo made her feel relaxed and comfortable. His encouragement and praise really brought out the best in her and after one hour of practicing together, she was able to use her arms and legs independently and keep a beat. He has a knack for explaining things so that even us non-musicians understand. My daughter is already looking forward to her next lesson which is a nice surprise compared to previous instruments and activities she's tried. Highly recommended.

About Clare
My training started when I was very young, age 7, with piano lessons. Since then, I have been playing music my whole life, and I love it! I received my Bachelor's in Music Performance 2001, and will receive a Master's in Music Education in 2017. I am currently looking for students for my private studio for ages 5 - 75, in string instruments violin, viola, cello, and beginner piano!

I take very young students, ages 5 -7, on violin or piano, and I would love to get more of the little ones interested in music! The lessons are also a great "mommy and me time" format, a great way to spend time with your child! I have found lots of success with this age group, by using a curriculum that I have developed which is based on the Suzuki method mixed in with classical training and fiddle training. Although I am not Suzuki certified, I use conce
pts and materials taken from the master teacher, Suzuki. From studying his philosophy and principals through research, I have found the Suzuki method to be a very holistic and "easy-to-understand" teaching method for young ages.

For adult students, I have found success teaching a curriculum that just lets you play music and develop a love for your instrument. I mainly teach adults using lots of music from pop tunes, holiday music, fiddle and Americana music. My curriculum for adults is more about making music and less about playing scales and etudes, although focus on technique is integrated within the type of music books we use.

I also teach high school, middle school and elementary school students all instruments, violin, viola, and cello.
Students excel at a very high level with my training. This group will be asked to study music in the classical training method with scales, etudes, and standard classical repertoire, and help with their school orchestra music. Please inquire about training for this age group in person.

*** Lesson Details ***
Beginner lessons are great fun! Watch how the instrument turns into clay that molds to your hand, your musical talent. I love to see the amazement in the student when they realize playing a musical instrument is not as difficult as it may look. Each subsequent lesson is a building process, building upon the foundation from the previous lesson. It is imperative that students practice! Practice whenever you get a chance, even a little bit goes a long way. Pick up the violin for ten minutes while you wait for the meal to cook in the evening or waiting for the laundry to finish. Then, find some time to sit quietly in a comfortable space and focus just on the tone and quality of your playing.

*** Studio Equipment ***
My home studio.

*** Specialties ***
I also hold a yearly spring recital to allow my students to perform, all ages included. This is always great fun and very rewarding! Plus, I'm really excited about my adult students, who are "up and coming" artists! I'm looking to start an adult ensemble for a separate recital to showcase their hard work and enjoyment of playing for the sake of playing a musical instrument! Please inquire about the adult group, even if you have just a little bit of interest in learning the fantastic violin, viola, cello, or piano! It is great fun!

Hello there, I'm Austin. I've been playing guitar since I was a kid. I've been performing live for the better part of the last decade, and have taken various college level music courses as well. In fact, I still study with a great jazz guitar teacher; Guitar is an instrument where there is always more to learn. I can help you learn anything from strumming along to a Bob Dylan song all the way through the ins and outs of the brilliant technique of Eddie Van Halen and Steve Vai. I can also teach you music theory as it applies to the guitar; such as how to read music, build and name chords (and why they work), scales and arpeggios (and how to use them in your playing), as well as an understanding of rhythm and time (a shortcoming of many aspiring guitarists!). I look forward to working with you!

About Zeynep
Hello! My name is Zeynep A. and I am a Turkish-American violinist living in New York City. I completed my Bachelor's degree at The Juilliard School and now I am currently pursing my Master's Degree at Juilliard.

I have worked with education programs at the Juilliard School for three years. I am a mentor for the Music Advancement Program at The Juilliard School, I am a Teaching Artist at the Thurgood Marshall Academy Lower School, and have also privately taught at the Aspen Music festival and School (P.A.L.S program). I have worked with the Education Programs at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. while being a National Symphony Orchestra Youth Fellow.

I absolutely love teaching and helping students find their own unique musical voice and musicianship. Every student learns in their own way, has their own needs and their own goal
s. As a dedicated teacher, I make sure to tailor each lesson to meet all the student's specific needs in order to help and guide them in becoming the best musician that they can be!

Below is my Biography, so you can get to know me a little bit more!

-- Zeynep A. Biography --

Turkish American violinist, Zeynep A, started studying the violin at the age of 5 as part of her music therapy treatment for her diagnosis of speech delay and Auditory Processing Disorder. Almost immediately after being introduced to the violin, Zeynep began to speak and following a year and a half of violin studies, she had her first solo appearance with Vivaldi’s A minor Violin Concerto, after winning the Peabody Concerto Competition.

As a soloist, chamber, and orchestral musician, Zeynep has appeared in a myriad of venues such as Carnegie Hall, Royal Albert Hall, Kennedy Center Concert Hall, Alice Tully Hall, Moscow Conservatory Great Hall, Mariinsky II Theatre, and Strathmore Hall. Future engagements include performing as a soloist with the Presidential Symphony Orchestra of Turkey during their 2019 USA Tour and recording a CD with the Turkish recording label, Lila Muzik.

Zeynep is the first prize winner in many competitions, some of which include the Juilliard Concerto Competition, the Dorothy DeLay Fellowship Competition at the Aspen Music Festival and School, the National Philharmonic Concerto Competition, and the Goldie and Feder Memorial String Competition. Additionally, in 2015, Zeynep was awarded the Ataturk Youth Achievement Award by the Ataturk Society of America in Washington DC.

Zeynep is currently pursuing her master’s degree at the Juilliard School as a recipient of the Ahmet Ertegun Scholarship, the C.V. Starr Scholarship, and the Molly Frank and Aliki Perroti Scholarship under the tutelage of Naoko Tanaka. Former teachers have included Oleg Rylatko, Aaron Rosand and Shirley Givens.

Community outreach and service has played an important part in Zeynep’s musical life. In 2013, Zeynep co-founded the group Sonatas Stopping Starvation. The project uses musical excellence to help develop citizens and leaders within the arts and the greater community. Their mission is to be of service as artists and citizens to organizations that work to fight hunger. Along with a school-wide food drive, they gave their first benefit concert in November 2013 at the Juilliard School. Zeynep is also a Morse Teaching Artist Fellow, a Gluck Community Service Fellow, and a Music Advancement Program Fellow.

As a Turkish American, Zeynep receives frequent invitations to perform in major music halls in Turkey. She was featured at age 9 on Turkish National Television while performing works of Kreisler and Massanet and she has worked with the violinist Cihat Askin in Cihat Askin and Friends project (CAKA) with performances including the opening gala of Istanbul Toy Museum.

Aside from music, Zeynep enjoys taking business classes at Columbia University through the Barnard-Columbia-Juilliard Exchange program, drinking tea, biking, and being an avid dog lover.

About April
I picked up music when I was very young and have never looked back. I started with the piano and then moved on to the violin, of which I competed regularly in up until high school. In high school I switched the viola and found it to me even more amazing. During high school I competed again in music between schools, the San Diego Youth Orchestra. I currently work with several students with special needs such as Autism and other Neurological delays. My son is Autistic and music was a great way for him to express himself. I found that the other children I work with on the spectrum have more abilities to express themselves through music then with words. I also work with students that are not yet comfortable with themselves and getting them to breath and enjoy the music helps bring them out of their shells.

I regularly find myself jamming o
ut with another music instructor every chance we get. Music is a great relief and enjoyment that I want to share with as many people as I can. I am currently in college getting my Bachelors degree in History with a minor in Music.
