My lesson plans are designed to be musical and fun. I want my students to understand the language of the music by studying their favorite bands and understanding the theory behind it. I have a strategy for everyone starting from beginner, intermediate, to advanced. I remember picking up a guitar for the first time and what a struggle it was to play my favorite songs. There is a method for achieving these goals and it is different for everyone. The one thing that will allow you to succeed is having a desire to learn and a passion for music. If you have those two things then I can direct you to the right path to achieve your musical goals!

Hi there. I'm Andrew. I have been teaching for about 10 years now and it has become one of the things I truly love to do. When I am not writing, reading, gigging, touring, or recording, I love to teach people the things that have made my life so colorful.
With a little push in the right direction, you can become an active participant in the things you love. No more watching from the sidelines. Become the musician, writer, speaker, reader that you have always wanted to be. It's never too late! Trying something new or asking for help can be intimidating, but I am happy to show you that the rewards far exceed the costs. Trust me, I speak from experience. I've taught personalized lessons for nearly 10 years now without a single complaint. At this point in my musical career, the majority of my experience and attitude has come from being "in the field". I've played everything from small dive bars to music festivals with crowds of thousands and been on tour and lived the whole life more ...

YOU can be an active musician. If you have the passion and desire. The first step though, is learning your instrument. Learning an instrument is something that stays with you for the rest of your life. It's an unfaltering companion that can benefit you in so many ways. I like to toss out the strict "teacher/student" regiment and create a laid back, fun, easy going atmosphere. I want to be buds and SHARE music with each other and introduce you into this world that I have grown to love so so much. There is nothing more rewarding. I promise. So let's get started!
*** Lesson Details ***
I am very laid back. Your progress is directly linked to you. I will give it my all to teach you and help you, but if you don't practice or soak it in, that's on you! I hate having a tense, seminar type lesson atmosphere. Lessons with me will be easy going and relaxed. I don't want to have to put on a sweater vest and wag my finger as a I scold you. That's just not me.
However, I DO expect you to get things done. Why waste your time with lessons if you're not going to take them seriously on any level? The curriculum will be totally personalized for YOU. After all, not everybody likes the same music and style. The first lesson or two will be getting a handle on exactly what YOU want to learn and what YOU want out of it. Finding out your favorite bands/artists, guitar players, bass players, etc. There's nothing worse than being taught something you have no desire for, but having it drilled into your head week after week! So whether that be blues, folk, metal, whatever, that's the first step. With that information I'll begin constructing and laying out the rest of your lesson plan.
*** Studio Equipment ***
Although I assume you have an instrument of your own (if not I recommend getting one, it sort of helps), if you're looking to just try things out at first I have more than a few extra that I'd be happy to let you use. My teaching studio doubles as a recording studio as well. This means 2 things: if ever you would like to record some of your music you know where to go! And also, I have the means to record the entire lesson if you'd like. You'll need to supply the blank CD(s) of course. It's not a requirement to record the lesson, just an option! Basically, I have everything you could ever possibly need for music lessons here. So you're set.
*** Travel Equipment ***
Guitars, amps, etc. anything that would be needed I've got!
*** Specialties ***
I am versed in blues, rock, metal, folk, hardcore, acoustic-finger-style and various other acoustic styles, and more. Through teaching and experience as a working musician I have mastered most genres and styles. When sitting at home jamming in my free time, I probably most frequently find myself playing acoustic finger-style, blues, folk, or rock, but love and appreciate most styles. So, bring it on!

My curriculum is flexible for all ages, but is designed specifically and intentionally to cover a broad array of skills that will help you find and hone your voice as a musician. I do hold my students to a high standard, and I expect they practice regularly. In return, I will work my hardest to make assignments fun, rewarding, and useful. I am extremely open to feedback; for example, song choice. If I say we're playing Bob Dylan and you're not a huge fan of that style, that A-OK. Just recommend an alternative for my approval and we will go-with-the-flow. Like Bruce Lee said, I'll be "Like Water."
There are no pre-requisites for this course; if you do not know how to read lead sheets, I will teach you. We will learn tab and musical notation, but we will ...
I'm Al. Born and raised Houstonian. I love my wife, my dog, and my guitar. In my spare time I enjoy playing videos games (my favorite being Super Smash Bros.), learning new skills (I'm currently taking an online computer science course through Rice), and creating and producing original music by myself and with friends. I have an album out on Spotify and all streaming platforms called Oceanside of Someday, and a second album and collaboration in the works. I am a core member of the Friendswood Friends Church worship band for which I play guitar and bass.
I am musically inspired by prog-folk titans such as Justin Vernon and Sufjan Stevens; country folk legends such as Townes Van Zandt and Johnny Cash; song-writing heroes like Bob Dylan, Neil Young, and Cat Stevens (Or Yusuf). I enjoy contemporary artists like Julien Baker,
I've been teaching guitar for years now, and I've been playing since I was 12. It has been a constant source of joy throughout my life. The guitar is an instrument that will challenge your discipline, mind, and strength; students that are persistent will be rewarded with a life-long skill and friend in the instrument. I am humbled by the positive feedback I have received as a teacher; I am very proud to say I was a Student Favorite on TakeLessons for 2 years running before I went on hiatus. Now that I'm back, I'm eager to earn that title once again.
I have students of all ages from all walks of life, from toddlers to CEOs, and I can teach you too. No matter your level of expertise with the guitar, I work very hard so my students might come away from each lesson having learned something. Around 60% of my students have been beginners, 20% having prior experience, and 10% having many years of experience.
I firmly believe that anybody can play the guitar if they set their mind to it. Heard the name Django Reindhart? The man was a legend. He had 3 fingers on his left hand and is remembered as one of the greatest guitarists of all time. It comes down to practice, the will to learn and improve, and consistency, and above all the love of music. My curriculum is designed to reinforce these values.
If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out. I'm always happy to help.
If you're looking for a challenge, developing a skill with lifelong payoff, and are ready to begin your musical journey, pick up where you left off, or need some coaching in the right direction, then let's begin. You book the time, and I'll take it from there.
I'm looking forward to meeting you.

My goal is not so much teaching one how to play an instrument, but more broadly, to help one cultivate their own living musicality. My own areas of practice, study, and specialization are in free improvisation, sound art/Sonic sculpture, conceptual performance, and songwriting/composition. I've explored a vast number of different styles and genre. Jazz, classical, folk and bluegrass, spirituals, blues, punk rock, contemporary ghospel, electronic dance and ambient, to name a few... I love working with kids, I love teaching any age any skill level, I promise to listen, and fine tune our lesson to fit your specific personality and needs.
I've worked with students ranging from age 3 to age 62 in the year or so I've been tutoring. I've taught piano mostly ,but am more technically proficient with guitar(electic/acoustic/classical).
I'm a songwriter and recording/performing artist, my style is very ecclectic and inspired by anything from classical, jazz, avant garde, to pop and folk music. I'm confident and versatile. Im comfortable playing or even performing with most instruments. It's taken alot of practice, reasearch, experimentation, and collaboration but over time musc has give
I believe in the cultivation of a living musicality.
My approach emphasises the importance of process, exploration and discovery, as well as the study and analysis of traditional concepts. I propose, active listening to be the simplest form of composition. And as musicians an active ear is central, not only in practice, but generally, for creative evolution and innovation.
I've found the most effective methods effectively balance theory and practice.
I believe the biggest inhibitor to growth, musical or otherwise, is a lack of confidence. A lack that comes from too much pressure to produce idealized results-- fear of mistakes...
I embrace the developmental process,
I work with every student to make each lesson plan efficient, meaningful and inspiring.

No more "air guitar"!!! Learn the basic chords or improve your knowledge base or learn to write your own music. YOU are the Master of your song!
I have enjoyed teaching at all levels, a part from creating, it is one of my passions. Teaching and watching my students practice and practice until they have mastered a chord, a song or create a beat, has always brought me joy that is priceless. Music is a strong global force that makes people feel good, gives strength, relaxed, pumped up, and brings everyone closer. I feel amazed and honored to pass my musical knowledge to you. Make time for your passion, and I will guide you.
The curriculum offered in these lessons are highly flexible depending on the needs and wants of the student. After establishing what their goal is, the student will go through an extremely efficient system of musical/guitar training that will lead to the desired goals in a reasonable amount of time.
However, no matter what the student's goals are, the curriculum will have a strong focus on making the student a great MUSICIAN. The guitar will be the way in which you will learn to express your developing musical ideas and interpretations of others ideas.
Some of the standard elements of the curriculum are: Picking/strumming technique, note identification on the fretboard, rhythmic exercises, chord construction, solo improvisation, music theory, ear training and much more!
I love teaching music because I know that I have the ability to translate my knowledge to all different kinds of people by helping my students learn the way that best suits them. There is no greater joy than seeing the progress in someone that you have been helping!
Here are a few things I have done in my career: Hoodoo theater production (Berlin, Germany), Of Monsters And Men tour (guitar), guitar for Ray Parker Jr. (Ghostbusters theme song), guitar for Freddie Washington, resident guitarist at Stages Theather (2017 season), (former) principle guitar at St. Andrews Episcopal Church, guitar for MOJI (Freepress Summer Fest & South

Teaching style is very organized and structured to build each lesson upon another. It worked out really well for me because I made sure I practiced almost every night in the beginning.
