Jan is a fun and dynamic instructor whose patience and attention to the needs of her students has been instrumental in helping my daughter enjoy and thrive in her voice and piano lessons. While some instructors, in our experience, have been excellent musicians but poor teachers, Jan's style and flexibility make her an ideal person for passing on her knowledge to students, so that they in turn develop their own musical talents and shine. Many thanks, Jan, for your gifts!

Acting students will receive instruction customized for their individual needs and skill level, drawing on a variety of techniques, including Linklater (physical and vocal work), Stanislavski, Meisner, and Grotowski, Shurtleff, among others. Students can work privately on audition skills, including monologues and cold reading, as well as scene work, character building and basic principles of acting. The first step to great acting is a free body and voice, allowing full expression of of emotional life of the character!

About Wendy
I am a professional singer, songwriter and actor working in the Chicago area for many years. I have a B.F.A. in Theater/Voice from The University of Kansas and an M.A. in Interdisciplinary Arts from Columbia College Chicago. I've been teaching private vocal instruction since 2003: I host the Singer's Salon in Chicago, a unique and supportive venue for singer's to become more comfortable performing before an audience. I also instruct workshops for vocal technique and performance. For 10 years I was the lead singer for The Red Apples, an acoustic/electric roots band that performed an eclectic mix of rock, swing, blues, country and jazz. Within the past year I have re-energized my theater and cabaret career, appearing at Davenport's Cabaret, in a new solo show, as well as productions at Big Noise Theater and Stage 773. I've also completed tw
o short films and started working on my own web series, about my life as a singer/voice teacher. I also have an art song project consisting of original material with composer Jaroslaw Golembiowski. As a singer and actress I have performed with many major theaters in the Chicago area, including Court Theater, Victory Gardens, National Jewish Theater, Bailiwick Theater, and Prop Theater.

*** Lesson Details ***
As a classically trained singer I will instruct you in all aspects of singing technique, from breath control and support to improving your tone, range, flexibility and resonance. I have recently completed training in Somatic Voicework, The LoVetri Method, which has enriched my understanding of the mechanics and health of the voice, as well as applications of technique to CCM or contemporary musical styles of singing.
My familiarity with a variety of musical styles from pop/rock, R&B, and country, to musical theater, lounge and jazz makes me an ideal teacher for those interested in contemporary styles.

I have spent many years developing my own style of singing and instruction. I draw on my experiences and training not only in music, but theater and movement, (Linklater, Alexander Technique, Grotowski) to create a well rounded approach to singing and performing. As an instructor, I am most interested in helping students find their true voice and artistic style. I teach students to find expression through and with a foundation of technique, rather then in spite of it. I also am very interested in helping students deal with the mental/emotional aspects of performance, an all important area so frequently ignored by music teachers. My style is nurturing, yet disciplined, and sprinkled liberally with good-natured humor."

*** Studio Equipment ***
My studio space is fully equipped with a piano, P.A. system with microphones, CD, MP3 player for tracks, and ability to record lessons if the student desires.

*** Travel Equipment ***
Please have a piano (in tune!) or keyboard for use in your in home lessons.

*** Specialties ***
I am classically trained, but I am very adept at teaching music in a wide variety of styles, including most contemporary styles of music including pop/rock, roots, swing, jazz and blues, country, r&b, and of course musical theater and cabaret. My band performs an eclectic mix of originals and covers in the roots rock genre, and I write music as well. I have many years of experience in the theater as an actress, and I coach acting technique and performance. I coach singer/songwriters, and all types of singers, of all ages. I have a workshop that specializes in helping people learn to perform better in front of an audience, and I host the Singer's Salon in Chicago, which is a supportive opportunity to perform regularly! I also coach bands, to improve their vocals, harmonies, etc.

Before my first lesson, I was nervous having no singing experience and not knowing what to expect from lessons.

Wendy, helped me relax and move forward in the process of learning to sing. I also appreciated how she kept me on topic and focused on the task at hand.

My first impression is that she is an intelligent professional and I look forward to my next lesson.

Since high school, I have been involved with the theatre. This year, I also taught a theatre class. I am very good at teaching improvisation techniques. Some productions I have been in include "Macbeth," "A Midsummer Night's Dream," "The Wizard of Oz," "The Sound of Music," and "South Pacific." I am also equipped to teach Musical Theatre.

About Elyse
Hi, Everyone! Thank you so much for taking a moment to read my blurb! My name is Elyse, and I can't wait to meet you! I've taught music in small ensembles since July, 2007 by helping out marching bands. It was so much fun! Teaching and music are my biggest passions.

**If you're going to make a mistake, make a loud one!!**

I want my students to know right off the bat it's okay to make mistakes! My philosophy is: You make mistakes. Mistakes don't make you. :) We fix them and learn together.

I have classroom taught since 2010 - General Music and Choir. I have been teaching private lessons since 2014, and I have absolutely LOVED helping my students read music, excel at playing or singing songs that they enjoy, and seeing their happiness and excitement when they realize how much they have achieved.

In 2009, I graduated from Kent S
tate University, located in Kent, OH, and I earned my Bachelor's degree in Music Education. I'm definitely a fun-loving, outgoing person, and my teaching style is tailored to my students; a think-outside-the-box style, and hands-on.

Let's get together, reach for those stars, and grab your goals!

Elyse taught me a few years ago when I was going to try out for my school's jazz band. She was real helpful in helping me select reeds to change my sound and even pointed me in the right direction of jazzier mouthpieces to try. Our lessons were lots of fun, especially when she taught me how to improvise.

A current BFA Acting student at Montclair State University (transfer from University of the Arts) willing to help fellow actors prepare for auditions, master Shakespeare, and explore several acting techniques from Meisner to Improv, classics to contemporary, Suzuki to Linklater- my goal is to provide a toolbox approach to acting personalized for each student and their needs.

Looking for college audition coach? I've been through that pesky audition process (twice! BFA transfers are crazy) and would love to spend the summer helping students prepare for university auditions this fall for both musical theatre and acting.

About Annelise
BFA audition season is coming up! Looking for an audition coach for acting or musical theatre? I'd be happy to help! Straight from the horse's mouth, I'll give you the inside information on what goes on in the audition room and how to get the most out of your time in front of the panel.

I'm an actor/musician born and raised in Las Vegas home for the summer before my final year at Montclair State University as a BFA Acting student. I've been studying music since six years old and have been doing acting and musical theatre for 7 years alongside directing, writing, voice tutoring, and composing.

Acting lessons available for a toolbox approach including Meisner, Uta Hagen, Improv, Stanislavski, Practical Aesthetics, and classics along with the voice work of Skinner and Linklater and movement technique of Laban and Suzuki. Lessons are t
otally personalized for the needs of the actor and can range from Shakespeare to contemporary scene study with a focus on specificity, clarity, vulnerability, and sincerity.

I teach singers in all genres, though I have the most experience in MT, folk, and pop. My goal is to help students not only learn to sing with the utmost vulnerability and honesty, but to ensure that they can do so while maintaining safe technique through breathing and relaxation. I work hard to eliminate affectations and habits to find the most uninhibited and expressive that the student's voice has to offer. MT singers will also focus largely on acting and finding authenticity within the suspended reality of song.

Lessons are tailored to the music taste and needs of the student and lesson plans are completely individualized to ensure the student is learning at growing at whatever pace suits their path while making sure they're still having fun and making art. If the student is interested in writing their own music, good news! I'm always willing to help fellow songwriters with composition.

I also offer lessons to child singers and actors as I love nothing more than seeing kid artists. Children's voice lessons are largely based in Musical Theatre/classics, focusing on ear training, sheet music, phrasing, rhythms, and breathing while children's acting lessons are based largely in classic/contemporary film and theatre, focusing on projection, clarity, commitment, and confidence.

A firm believer that anyone can act and anyone can sing- willing to teach anyone who doesn't already know more than I do!
