Harp Lessons in Highlands. Amazing Teachers.

I'm a professional harpist who graduated from Yale University with a B.A. in Music with extensive teaching experience in the United States and Belgium. I am offering harp lessons to students of all backgrounds, levels, and ages.

I am currently in the process of completing my Doctor of Musical Arts at the CUNY Graduate Center. I hope to transfer the skills and knowledge I have obtained from working with some of the most renowned harpists to my own students.

Teaching is a passion for me. Whether you are just taking lessons for fun, or whether you are serious about creating a future professional career, I will be equally attentive to your needs. I like to ensure that my students progress during the lesson, but not at the expense of having fun! I believe that a relaxed atmosphere is essential to the learning experience.

With 30+ years teaching experience, I have the tools and expertise you need to help you succeed with your harp goals. My background includes studying with world renowned harp teachers Alice Chalifoux and Susann McDonald, and I share with my harp students the unsurpassed harp skills passed down to me, with additional certification in Suzuki Harp Method and Therapeutic Music. In addition to harp performance, I have taught courses in music theory, composition and arranging for harp, harp pedagogy (teaching methods), harp maintenance and orchestra/ensemble. From beginners to veterans seeking additional skills, I'm here to help, and am happy to give instruction, advice and guidance on any harp topic.

I am well trained in both pedal and Celtic harp. I love them both equally. I have years of teaching experience and am equally comfortable working with children and adults. I love the harp and I love to teach. I can help you figure out where to rent a harp to begin. Online harp lessons work great! I teach great technique so you can play the music you want. I also teach great practice skills.

As a harp teacher, all of my
students play scales, arpeggios, and technical exercises in
their lessons. I believe having a strong technical base is the foundation for
every part of playing and you can't learn without it. I will set the repertoire
for students according to their technical progress and although I may
take into consideration a student's desires to learn a certain piece, there has
to be time and they have to be ready for it. I have both short term and long
term goals for each student that involve theory, technical ability, and
repertoire both orchestral and solo. Adult students still have to learn
technique, it makes things much more fun and easy six months later, I promise! Beginning students will learn how to read notes, understand basic theory, and technique in a short amount of time, so don't be scared if you have never had a music lesson before.

I welcome adults and children who are new to the harp or who want to increase their skills. As a teacher, I focus on helping students be able to play the music that is interesting or fun for them. I will start with a firm background on the basics of hand position and reading music, and then we can take it away with what thrills you, whether it is pop, folk, classical, religious, or something else. I hope we can take this journey in music together!

Dr. S. believes that great playing is derived from great technique. Technique is an essential part of becoming a successful musician. Dr. S. helps her students perfect their technical abilities allowing them to explore vast musical repertoire.

Musicality is what brings music to life. Every musician has their own unique ideas that are expressed through their playing. Dr. S. helps her students develop their natural creative instincts and convey their ideas through their music.

Learning how to play music is fun and rewarding, however it also requires a great deal of self discipline. Practicing your instrument consistently is necessary to become a successful musician. Music is a fun way to learn the value of hard work and self discipline for students of all ages.
