My Teaching Philosophy instills the basics of an instrument by developing focus, musical understanding and physical motor skills.

Regardless of age, each of these aspects must be cultivated in order to produce a healthy and stable musician. Learning focus, musicianship, and physicality requires a returning to the basics after higher skill sets have been attained.

About Zoe

Developing Focus In order to play a piece of music, the student must have a stability and clarity of mind. This can be cultivated through short sessions (5-10 minutes) where the student focuses on their breath, and listens outwards to external sound. Based on age and maturity level, these meditat

Learning to play a stringed instrument is one of the toughest things to do and I'm here to help you learn to love the process and feel confident about your playing. I will help you achieve your goals, whether that's trying out for your school orchestra, preparing for a recital, learning new repertoire, or simply learning how to practice more efficiently.

For beginners, I teach from the Suzuki Method books.

I’ve had three lessons so far and I feel so supported by Gail. I’m an adult student and Gail is very patient with me and kind. I actually really enjoy going to my lessons! She has already taught me so many handy tricks that she learned from many years of experience. I’m brand new to the violin and Gail is excellent at helping me with my hand placement and I feel confident that what she’s teaching me is really setting me up for success and good habits with the violin.

This instructor is very flexible and understanding. He is very knowledgeable and talented and I'm very privileged to be his student. He takes his time to make sure that you are understanding and learning. You can sense his excitement and passion for music and I know that he honestly wants to see me succeed. "My son has been taking viola lessons from Helen for seven years. We have been very happy with her instruction and the wonderful, caring connection she has made with our son and family. Helen encourages each student’s progress while holding them to very high technical and musical standards. She engages students with age-appropriate, entertaining games and prizes to hook their attention and shape important skills and techniques. Helen is focused on molding young musicians into skilled, confident, advanced players while still being understanding and flexible with students’ life changes and schedules.
She encourages students to get involved with chamber music and other orchestra opportunities to expand their ensemble playing, and she connects students with other musicians to collaborate on projects. She has coached our three children with their string trio and has helped them select music appropriate for their level and interests. Helen is happy to help students with their orchestra auditions, seating auditions, and ensemble music.
Helen is an active professional musician as a member of the CSO and Highlands Square Ensemble among other professional musical pursuits and interests. She is involved in bringing musical opportunities to underserved communities through El Sistema and involved in music education in Haiti. This summer our son was able to collaborate with a violinist from Haiti who was visiting Helen. They worked together on several duets on a few occasions.
Throughout the school year, Helen facilitates studio group classes where students can play for each other in a fun, relaxed atmosphere. Helen connects students with excellent professional accompanists who are adept at collaborating with young musicians. In addition, she organizes 1-2 studio recitals per year where students can share their work with family and friends.
Helen is a talented musician, an excellent teacher, and a wonderful human being. She is patient, kind, helpful, and encouraging. I highly recommend her as an outstanding viola instructor."
