I focus equally on fundamentals, tone production, proper air support, intonation and technique.

About Nathan
I have been teaching private lessons for close to 10 years and have been an active performer for even longer, playing in all different types of groups, from rock bands and jazz groups to orchestras and brass bands. I studied music at Frostburg State University (Bachelors) and the Peabody Conservatory (Masters). I can teach just about any age and skill level and cover anything you are interested in learning; whether its a certain style, genre, technique or song.

*** Lesson Details ***
My lessons are laid back, with a focus on perfecting the basics. Most students work out of a method book appropriate to their skill level. Aside from that we'll also spend time learning songs and pieces of the students choice. With the right amount of effort, you'll know your way around your instrument in no time at all

*** Travel Equipment ***
Will provide sheet music and exercises. My students should have a working instrument as well as any method book or sheet music we are working on.

*** Specialties ***
I teach all styles and genres

My daughter really enjoyed her lesson with Nate. He shared some tricks with her that she was showing me in the car on the way home. She never does that. She left very excited to learn more!

I am able to teach beginning level horn.

About Justin
Applauded for his “gleaming trumpet work” (Hyde Park Herald) and “dazzling virtuosity” (Grunion Gazette), Justin B. is a versatile musician, performing on both historical and modern trumpets. He specializes in early music, most notably in difficult high-register music for Baroque trumpet. Before formally studying Baroque trumpet, Justin won first prize in multiple historical instruments divisions of the National Trumpet Competition. As a highly sought-after solo/principal Baroque trumpeter, Dr. B. has performed with several leading early music ensembles throughout North America including American Bach Soloists, Apollo’s Fire, Washington Bach Consort, Tempesta di Mare, Musica Angelica, Scaramella, Bach Collegium San Diego, Lyra Baroque Orchestra, and many others.

Justin continues to perform as both a soloist and ensemble musician, combi
ning ongoing North American engagements with new collaborations with leading Baroque ensembles in Denmark as well as in the rest of Scandinavia and Europe. In Europe he has played with Camerata Øresund, Copenhagen Soloists, Barokksolistene, Arte dei Suonatori, Höör Barock, Enghave Barok, the Næstved Early Music Festival, Ensemble Hven, and several others.

As a modern trumpeter, Justin has experience performing in orchestras, wind ensembles, jazz ensembles, pit orchestras for opera and musical theater, British brass bands, and numerous chamber ensembles. Before beginning his college career, he was principal trumpeter of the DC Youth Orchestra and had the opportunity to tour Japan as a trumpet soloist. He also performed regularly with the Prince George’s Philharmonic while in high school. More recently, he as appeared as a soloist with the South Dakota Symphony, the Firelands Symphony, and the Las Vegas Sinfonietta.

In addition to be being a trumpeter, Justin is also a countertenor and has sung with Apollo’s Fire and Opera Cleveland. While in Ohio, he was an alto section leader in the chamber and chancel choirs at Trinity Cathedral in downtown Cleveland and was the countertenor with Cantores Cleveland (now Contrapunctus). In addition, Justin briefly served as a bass section leader at Church of the Covenant in Cleveland. Justin also plays recorder.

Justin earned his DMA in trumpet performance from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. He received his MA in early music performance practices from Case Western and his BM in trumpet performance from the University of Maryland. His primary trumpet teachers include Chris Gekker, Barry Bauguess, Steven Hendrickson, Steven Trinkle, and Justin Emerich. He has studied voice with Delores Zeigler, Ellen Hargis, and Aaron Sheehan. As a graduate assistant, Justin taught courses in ear training and music appreciation, and was a harpsichord tuner.

-----

“The orchestra brought out the pulsy organ-grinder quality in the first movement of Concerto 3, but it was [Brandenburg] Concerto 2 that was the real show-stopper. Justin [B.], on Baroque trumpet, trilled his way nearly effortlessly through one of the most difficult parts in the repertoire, the highest notes piercingly clear above the orchestra.” (Post-Bulletin)

“It [the Baroque trumpet] is more difficult to play than its modern counterpart, but it’s a fascinating and arresting sound. The trumpet part in the second [Brandenburg] concerto is famous for its fiendish difficulties, and Justin [B.] played it with aplomb.” (Edmonton Journal)

“Skilled [Baroque trumpet] players can play the notes of the harmonic series with such instruments. A very refined embouchure is needed to “lip” or flatten or sharpen the impure harmonics of the notes of the 11th and 13th harmonics. The most virtuosic could use such techniques to produce certain chromatic notes outside this series…Justin [B.] made such skills seem effortless…” (Classical Voice of North Carolina)

“…trumpeter Justin [B.] displayed dazzling virtuosity in the solo cantata [“Jauchzet Gott in allen Landen”]…”(Grunion Gazette)

“A good trumpet player is hard to find, and an excellent one harder still. It’s again still rarer to find a great player of the baroque trumpet, since the instrument is considerably harder to play than its modern counterpart (smaller embouchure, no valves) and this may explain why Justin [B.] is so darn busy and why he plays with, well, basically everyone.” (The WholeNote)

Fantastic first lesson with Justin! My 12 year old learned so much in his first 45 minutes and is so excited and energized to practice and continue learning. Justin's communication is fabulous and he is incredibly on top of things! I received an email within 15 minutes of the first lesson with notes, things to work on, and activities to practice before his next lesson. We are beyond ecstatic that we found Justin and look forward to working with him for years to come!

Hello! My name is Katie and I currently study music education at Grand Valley State University. I have been playing on the french horn since August 2007. I am looking to build my studio with beginning to intermediate players. I am also wanting to teach basic music theory lessons along with rhythms. I have been in marching band as a mellophone player for 6 years. I am willing to make at home visits and to have lessons held at my home.

About Katie
I love to inspire students to practice, that is where the real magic happens. I love to see them not only set goals for themselves but reach them. I am willing to do whatever it takes to see them succeed. I love working with people and encouraging them. I have been a horn player since August 2007. I am studying french horn at Grand Valley State University but am also efficient in euphonium, piano, music theory, aural (reading rhythms and reciting them aloud), and trumpet. I have been in marching band for 6 years on mellophone so I can also help with teaching marching techniques and mellophone playing since it is very different from french horn.

I have been teaching for over 5 years and love working with horn players of all levels. I realize that each student is unique and always approach individual lessons with my student's particular goals in mind. I have a basic curriculum that I use in order to build a solid musical foundation for my students, but I am open to working on whatever kind of music or repertoire that they may enjoy. I love being able to expand my students' knowledge and appreciation of the world of music. It is always exciting to me when a student achieves a goal they habe set or learns a new skill that helps them in their musical expression.

About Rachel
I am a freelance horn player with a passion for teaching both horn and piano. I have a Bachelor's of Music from The University of Arizona and a Master's of Music from California State University Long Beach.

I have been teaching privately and in group settings for over 5 years and really enjoy getting to pass on the knowledge and musicianship that I have received from my teachers on to the next generation.

I teach using a base curriculum but also love to work on pieces that students want to play outside of their main course.

I love the sound of the French horn! I believe it's the most beautiful sounding brass instrument there is, and I want all my students to fall in love with it too. My goal is to give my students the skills they need to excel in performance and in practice. I always teach so that my students can eventually teach themselves. I take great joy in tailoring my teaching style to fit my student's learning style.
I have taught many students with different aspirations, whether they be to prepare for college or just to play casually for their own personal satisfaction. Ultimately the goal is to have fun AND get results!

About Jeffrey
I am freelance musician operating primarily in the LA area. I earned my B.M. in music performance from Biola University and my M.M. in music performance from California State University, Long Beach.

Throughout the years spent as a student and a professional, I’ve had the opportunity to study with and play along side some of the world’s greatest horn players and pedagogues.

My teaching philosophy is to always find the system that best works for the individual. My ultimate goal for all my students is that they can eventually be their own teacher. Every student is different. We all have different physical and psychological characteristics that inform how we understand and apply technique. My modus operandi is to always start with a broad overview of some of the world’s best tested methods, then move on to a more tailored method as the st
udent develops their own musical identity.

I believe there's a place in the world for horn players of ALL levels. I doesn't matter what your aspirations are, if you have a passion for horn playing, then you're on the same page as me! I love the horn and I love teaching others how to play it!
