Teaching Style
I believe first and foremost in supporting and developing what musically inspires a student’s decision to study and play music. In order to fully develop control, musicality and understanding of the music language, it is important to focus on several components including music theory (scale and harmonic structure/function and rhythm), style, ear-training, reading and performance skills.

Expectations of Students
Like any aspect of life, consistency and patience are two very important qualities to posses when working towards a goal. The duration of each practice session is proportional to the level of the student. Learning how to practice efficiently with your instrument is key for adherence and success in obtaining your goals.

Based on my experience as a working professional guitarist and music educator, with extensive experience touring in the U.S. and Europe, I've come to believe that every student has the ability to rapidly grow and flourish into an accomplished guitar player. The trick is to find the type of music that the student is most excited about playing, and then to teach them the basic skills they will need to play in that style. I always do this through a combination of working with students to learn the songs or pieces they love, and teaching them some of the underlying principles of music theory and instrumental style that define that genre of music. Through this process, I want to ensure that students acquire a skill set that allows them to continue teaching themselves, even outside of our lessons, learning new songs by ear, and even writing their own music using the techniques we practice in lessons. I make a point of ensuring that, after every lesson, my students come away with a new ...

"I've had four lessons so far with Steve, and I am so pleased with how it is going! Steve is very skilled, patient, kind, punctual and professional. He responds to all my questions, and is very encouraging. He comes to my office in Pasadena to give me my lesson.

I find that the biggest challenge in learning something new, is keeping my own internal critic under control as I struggle with note reading, and learn how to play the guitar. The fact that Steve is so patient and never critical helps to offset my internal critic. I have felt self doubting in the first two lessons, but by lesson 3, I am confident that if I keep practicing and working with Steve, eventually I will get it.

Steve also shared info re his Taylor Mini guitar which is much smaller than the typical guitar, easier for me to play because the frets are smaller for smaller hands. I just bought my own Taylor Mini, a beautiful instrument which also inspires me to keep at it! Steve is also introducing some popular songs starting in lesson 3, which also makes it more enjoyable.

This is one of the best decisions I have made for myself, and I am very happy that I was lucky to find Steve. He's great!"
