About Allison
Welcome to my profile! I provide a warm and encouraging environment for students to make the mistakes necessary for learning an instrument and exploring their musical creativity. My passion for music has inspired me to pursue teaching and performance professionally in order to help others achieve their musical dreams.

My ultimate goal is for my students to gain all the skills necessary for creating meaningful musical experiences for themselves. Specifically I try to help them gain clean technique, a pleasing and expressive tone, basic understanding of music theory, and enough knowledge of music history to play with appropriate expression. I try to accomplish these goals by clearly explaining careful and deliberate practice techniques that remove the stress often associated with daily practice. Students will reap the benefits if they a
re committed to a regular practice schedule, are attentive during lessons, ask questions, and are honest with themselves about what is and is not working.

I began my teaching career in college while earning a Bachelor's in Music from Southwestern University (magna cum laude). I currently play as a soloist and with groups including AURORA: Trio for Flute, Harp, and Cello, the Shimmer Flute Choir, and Sounds of Silver Flute Quartet. I am also an active member of the Music Teacher's National Association and volunteer coordinator of the Houston Flute Club.

I love performing and I share my passion for music with my students.

*** Lesson Details ***

***I only teach lessons in my studio or online for certain subjects. I DO NOT TRAVEL TO STUDENTS' HOMES.***

Flute Lessons:

I offer lessons that cover just about every aspect of playing the Western concert flute. Students can expect to become well-rounded musicians who are knowledgeable about flute technique, tone, music theory and history. I use a combination of the Rubank Method and Flute 101 books with handout supplements.

The biggest changes I've seen in my students after a few months is a better understanding of how to practice efficiently as well as improved tone. Furthermore, every year many of my students earn superior ratings of 1 on their UIL solos.

Every Spring my students and I participate in Flute Fest, a day-long celebration of all things flute, including concerts, masterclasses, and a solo and ensemble contest. A few weeks later we have our annual studio recital where everyone shows off their hard work.

A NOTE ABOUT WOODEN FLUTES

Occasionally I am asked to help students play wooden, non-western flutes. Although the very basic fundamentals are the same, I do not play these flutes and do not teach them.

Piano Lessons:

Piano is not only fun to play for its own sake, but provides a foundation for all music making. Students will learn about proper posture and hand-positioning, note-reading, rhythm, and a little history as well, using the Piano Pronto book series.

Music Theory Lessons:

I can help students of any instrument better understand the fundamental concepts of music theory: scales, intervals, chords, part-writing, etc. Theory lessons take place at the piano to demonstrate concepts. However, students do not have to play piano to take theory lessons. I typically use a combination of the Master Theory curriculum and other handouts, unless the student is already working out of another textbook.

**Online theory lessons** use the same curriculum, but with the screen share feature to help my demonstrations.

Summer Curriculum:

During the summer I offer additional group classes on different subjects, including theory and ear-training. I try something new every year to provide a variety of opportunities for students to learn and grow in their musicianship.

***Tuition Packages***
I have combined my own policies with TakeLessons'. I consider the Recurring Schedule a Subscription Package, where clients pay the same amount every month, equal to the value of four lessons, regardless of the number of lessons attended. This guarantees a permanent reservation of your time slot. I only allow Schedule-As-You-Go under special circumstances. Please send me a message first if you are unsure about committing to a regular time. I am happy to answer questions about tuition through the Ask A Question feature!

*** Studio Equipment ***
My studio is located in the front room of my home and includes a music stand, piano, and comfortable chairs in case parents would like to stay for the lesson.

*** Specialties ***
I primarily concentrate on classical music, but I also have experience with extended techniques, which include singing and playing at the same time, key clicks, and multiphonics.

Hsiao-Lan started teaching my 3 year old. She has incredible patience and shows the kids how much fun you can have while playing the piano. My daughter loved her and was always looking forward to her piano classes. I would highly recommend this teacher to anyone who is looking for their kids to have fun while they learn to play the piano. Unfortunately, we were not able to continue the classes but in a near future i would love for her to teach my daughter once again. Hsiao-Lan truly has a gift in teaching young children.

wonderful teacher

I asked my 10 year old son what rating I should give Dr. Wang and he said "5 stars". She is very patient and friendly when teaching my son who is a bit shy. She has chosen songs that are fun that he enjoys playing, and I never hear a complaint about going to lessons. She is helpful with all aspects of learning to play the piano, and I have noticed his playing becoming more personal rather than simply following notes.

About Alina
Ask me: What is the music in my life? And I'll tell you - Music is everything! Having captured my heart since childhood, music still captivates me in its endless vistas. In my childhood I had a small model of a real piano and used to insert the sheets on the music stand and setting the dolls in front as an audience imagined myself giving concerts. Musical art was for me not just a fad - the music became my profession. Piano is amazing and is the perfect tool with which you can create a variety of images and indulge in any mood - with it you can share sadness and joy, talk about anything. I would be happy to introduce you to the multifaceted and vast expanses of the art of playing the piano.
Alina U an accomplished Ukrainian born pianist, teacher, chamber performer and accompanist. She has appeared on different performing venues in
Ukraine, Egypt, Spain, Morocco and US.
Alina’s desire to become an artist came at an early age. She performed songs and poetry at all family events, but her dream was to learn how to play the piano. She had a small model of a real piano and she used to insert the sheets on the music stand and setting the dolls in front as an audience imagined herself giving concerts.

She began her piano studies at the age of 7 at the Children Musical School No.1 in Sumy, Ukraine and gave her first solo recital ‘’Evening of Waltzes’’ at the age of 11. Alina continued her education with D. Bortnianskiy High School of Arts and Culture, Sumy, Ukraine, were she got an Associate degree in Music Art. Through education in National P.I. Tchaikovsky National Music Academy of Ukraine in the class of distinguished pianist Lyudmila Martcevich. Ms. U. was performing at National Philharmonic of Ukraine, National P.I. Tchaikovsky Music Academy of Ukraine, Kiev’s House of Teachers and National Museum of Literature in Ukraine and many others. While studying in Ukraine Ms. U. was participating in numerous regional and national competitions and festivals.

Throughout her studies, Alina had the opportunity of working with a number of distinguished piano teachers such as Valentina Skoromnaya, Nelli Ldova, Aleksandr Ldov, Lyudmila Martcevich, Nancy Weems, Timothy Hester, and Brian Suit. Ms. U. also participated in master classes with Michail Stepanenko, Alla Zadirackaya, Iya Pavlova, Cristina Capparelli Gerling and others prominent musicians.
Ms. U. holds a Master’s degree in Applied Piano Performance from Moores School of Music, University of Houston. From Tchaikovsky National Music Academy of Ukraine she holds a second Master’s degree, major in Piano Performance and minor in Piano Pedagogy, Chamber Ensemble, and Accompaniment.

Ms. U. has taught for over 17 years. Her pedagogical experience includes teaching the students of all ages and all skill levels, from five years old to adult, from beginner to advance players. Beside her pedagogical carrier in US as well in her native Ukraine, Alina also taught the piano in Egypt and Morocco. Her passion to provide the best knowledge to each student’s needs and abilities. This allows her to tailor each lesson accordingly to each student. Her goal is to enrich the lives of children and others by providing the understanding of music, fostering the enjoyment and inspiring musical imagination.
Ms. U. currently is a member of faculty in International Music Academy and St. Andrew School of Art.

The teaching methods focus on nurturing and developing the talents and musical abilities of each student by providing a well-rounded musical education. It incorporates principles and techniques of the Russian classical piano school, and includes repertoire from different styles of music, such as jazz, pop, folk, etc. Classically trained students develop the highest level of skill and ability on their instrument, and acquire a superior knowledge of music in general. An essential element of teaching is to develop a comprehensive knowledge of musical content, such as note reading, rhythm, harmony, structural analysis and many other aspects of music and its components. More comprehensive instruction in music theory and ear-training, already integrated into piano lessons, is offered in separate classes as well.

*** Practice guidance and expectations***

- Lesson’s regular attendance is very important to ensure student success.

- In order to progress satisfactorily, daily quality practice is necessary and required. Students should practice each day for the length of their lesson.

-Detailed assignments for each piece will be written weekly in student’s notebook. To help your child develop self-discipline and good practice habits, schedule a regular time for practice each day. The practice session can be done all at once or divided into two or more sessions. Younger children especially need help with their practicing.

-The practice environment should be treated as a studying place free from interruptions (family, friends, TV, phone, tablet, computer, etc.). Parents support and cooperation is a must for a child's musical growth.

*** Parental Responsibilities***

- Encourage progress! Many small steps throughout the year yield great results. Important note: Sometime during the course of taking piano lessons, your child may say something like, “I don’t want to practice,” or “I’m too tired to go to piano lessons,” or “I don’t want to go- I want to play with my friends,” “I want to quit,” etc. Just be aware that your child’s interest will probably not be consistent; but to be successful, you will need to be consistent in your encouragement and commitment to music instruction. In most cases, simply acknowledge your child’s comments, but then go on with your normal routine just as you would if you heard the comment, “I don’t want to brush my teeth,” “I don’t want to stop playing with my toys,” or “I don’t want to go to bed.”

- Parents are welcome and encouraged to attend lessons at any time, but SHOULD NOT interfere in the process of the lesson no matter how well intended it may be.

- Please don’t hesitate to communicate with the teacher any questions or concerns you may have about your child’s progress. Communication with parents is vital to a child’s progress. Please feel free to chat with your instructor during the lesson time. Your instructor will generally allot a few minutes at the beginning of each lesson to communicate with the Parent. We ask that you please keep in mind that we are not available beyond your scheduled time, so as not to impede on the lesson time of the next student. If you would like to discuss anything beyond, please feel free to email your teacher, or call and leave a message.

***Make-up policy***
Notify the teacher at least 24 hours in advance if the student cannot attend the lesson. There are no refunds for missed lesson. Occasionally the teacher might have schedule conflict due to performing activity. If a teacher is absent, a make-up lesson will be scheduled at a mutually convenient time. Scheduled make-up lessons missed by the student will not be made up.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Brand new Kawai 5' 5" EG 30 baby grand piano.

Ms. Alty is a very patient yet thorough piano teacher. Since we left our hometown for Houston, it's been really difficult getting a piano teacher that matches the same talent as our previous teacher. We had gone through 4 teachers in Houston. However finding Ms. Alty was like finding a rare gem at the top of the mountain.
She is very knowledgeable and has the skills to get a child to listen and actually want to practice. My children have improved tremendously and actually started playing more complicated musical piece.
My children love Ms. Alty and always look forward to having their piano class. I would recommend Ms. Alty if you're looking for a very musically knowledgeable and talented piano teacher who is both firm and gentle when teaching,

Hi Friends,

Thanks for viewing my TakeLessons profile! I am a professional harpist with a Bachelor of Harp degree from Juilliard, and a Master of Music degree from the Yale School of Music. Since finishing school, I've worked as a harpist performing a range of genres in New York City, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Washington DC, New Jersey, Seattle, New Hampshire, and now, Texas. My training is in classical harp, but I spend a lot of time playing recording jazz and pop music as well. Being a versatile musician is important both for musical growth and development, and also for diverse career opportunities.

Teaching harp lessons is one of my favorite things; it's extremely rewarding to notice expansion in a student's skillset and practical knowledge. My harp teachers at Juilliard and Yale are very important to me, and I frequently relay th
eir sentiments to my students. I always try to be aware of my students' interests and other activities/obligations, and tailor a lesson plan based on how much time they are able to devote to practicing, what repertoire would develop their technique and musical abilities, and, of course, what repertoire interests and appeals to them. I also discuss music theory and tips and tricks for orchestra, chamber music, and other performance opportunities at length in my lessons. I'm comfortable with concert, competition, and audition prep, and apply my experience in all of those areas.

Please feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns. I look forward to speaking with you!
