About Jerred
I'm a young, enthusiastic, energetic, and patient pianist with a B.A. in Jazz Piano Performance from Lewis and Clark College.

So, born in Dallas, I've spent parts of my childhood in various parts of the country, from Washington D.C. to Carbondale, Colorado to Portland, Oregon, and now in hot and humid Houston, Texas. America has a plenty to offer and our great country's musical history is rich and eclectic. I first started playing piano at a very young age from a very old lady. It was something I resented my parents for, not really understanding the whole point of playing music. But now, in retrospect, I thank them indefinitely for exposing me to one of the most important passions of my life. It was in 6th grade that I joined a rock n' roll band, singing and playing all sorts of keyboards and having a ball with music. The idea that I w
as having fun playing music finally dawned on me and the verb "playing" music finally made perfect sense to me. Without passion, music is simply another endeavor, so this realization propelled me into the realm of music indefinitely.

In high-school I finally learned what jazz music was and fell in love with the idea of spontaneous improvisation. Learning theory really helped and I started jamming with my buddies, eventually starting a cover band. Although I've never lost sight of my classical roots, trying to improve my technique as well as my sight-reading, it was in jazz that I really found my calling. So in college, I started studying with a great jazz pianist, Randy Porter, and found my fingers wrapping themselves around my own music in a way I never thought possible. So that's that, I've recently graduated, having played gigs and teaching kids, and found my way into a new city with new possibilities.

When it comes to teaching, most teachers adhere to a strict curriculum. While I do love my curriculum, I will often change things around in order to cater to my students' different needs. Through all my experiences, I've learned that positive reinforcement is ideal and that a good association with a learning experience often paves the way for more of them. Working with me gives students the opportunity to make headway in an instrument without painstaking monotony. The more that somebody enjoys learning, the more that they learn. I love to have fun when I'm teaching, so my students tend to have fun as well. Like I said earlier, music should be "played," and playing should be fun!

*** Lesson Details ***
My lessons will usually begin with a recap of the last week, what the student has practiced, and what they accomplished since the last lesson. For some students, I will assign listening over the week, so at the beginning of the lessons, I read over the observations that they made in regards to the songs they listened to.
One thing I require of all of my students is a notebook devoted solely to the lesson, where the student writes down what he/she thinks about in terms of accomplishments and what they want to learn. I will also write down in the notebook different techniques, assignments, and various other things related to the lesson for the betterment of the student. My typical lesson will involve a communication between the student and myself, trying best to learn where the student is coming from and cater to his/her necessities in terms of learning. I am laid back, for the most part, but will encourage the student to practice. I do not get angry, but I will try to inspire the student through various techniques, becoming more disappointed than enraged at a student's lack of enthusiasm. Lessons for me are fun and I try and convey that jovial enthusiasm to my students.

Lessons in living room with upright piano, couch. I do have cats, so heads up if you're allergic.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I may or may not bring music paper and lesson books. If it is the first lesson, I'll definitely bring some material. I expect a piano in the home of the student given the enormous stature of the instrument.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in jazz piano, first and foremost. Although I was coached in classical as a child and can easily teach most intermediates, jazz is my forte and my major in college. In terms of teaching styles, it all depends on the student. More than most teachers, though, I put a heavy weight on listening to music in order to fully understand it. Technique is very important and must be taught, but feel is probably paramount and should be emphasized. Before a student can accurately play a piece of music, he/she must be able to connect with the music. When it comes to the piano, especially jazz piano, theory and knowledge of how the sounds of the instrument interact are also crucial. I will teach an appropriate amount of theory to the students given the style of play and pieces they are learning.

Jerred is an easy going, flexible and professional teacher who teaches my 7 years old son. My son sees him as his role model and has taken to Jerred's style of teaching very well. Very impressed with what he has achieved so far. Currently we go to his apartment which is in a great location.

I began my singing career 10 years ago and deliberated at length as to whether or not I needed or would benefit from vocal lessons seeing as I already knew how to sing (or so I thought). After my first lesson with Charles, however, my mind was opened to a variety of extremely useful techniques and methods that have drastically improved my singing abilities and overall performance. Whether you're a seasoned professional or are just getting started, I highly recommend taking lessons with Charles. His upbeat, encouraging attitude made me feel very comfortable and capable and I look forward to my lessons each week. Charles is a 5-star teacher, musician, and singer hands down.

Steven has been working with my daughter in piano and singing. The first lesson he discussed with her what she'd like to achieve, and they set goals for them to work towards, which I love. My daughter really enjoy's working with Steven and practicing piano is no longer a chore for her. He's teaching style is a great fit for her, and in 4 weeks she's learned more from Steven than she has from other instructors we've had. I have no trouble recommending Steven.

I would like to say Steven was an amazing piano teacher for my 5 year old and he really was able to teach him a lot of the basics and some neat tunes. He is great with kids and with my child being 5 and needing a lot of patience it was really a breeze for Steven to teach and keep his attention during the lesson. He is definitely a natural at what he does! I am very satisfied with Steven and his style of teaching. He is a well deserved five star rating and I can not wait till my son gets to start guitar lessons with him in the future.

However, learning to read is required for subsequent lessons and will be a large focus for all non-readers. Music is not learned "by ear." A certain amount of theory will be a part of every lesson just as technique and repertoire. Concerning repertoire, it may be selected from the western classical, musical theatre, and popular rep based on the student's goals and learning needs with their input. The main emphasis on performance lessons, however, will be technique and reading. Students should come to the first lesson prepared to discuss their background & goals and the plan of their course of study.

About Troy
Composer Troy W. graduated from the New England Conservatory, earning his Bachelors, Masters (cum laude) and Graduate Diploma while studying with mentor Malcolm Peyton. After spending a year studying with Lukas Foss in Boston, Mr. W. moved to Houston in 2001 where he continued graduate studies at Rice University's Shepherd School of Music.

During his time as a teacher with the Michael P. Hammond Preparatory Program at Rice University's Shepherd School of Music, Troy taught classes in music fundamentals and music theory for pre-college students. He has also served on the faculty of the Summer Institute for Piano teaching courses in Form & Analysis for pre-college students.

Troy also has maintained a private studio, tutoring and teaching private lessons in composition, ear training, voice, piano, literature, and history for over ten
years. Students who have studied with him come from a wide range of backgrounds with different goals. Those who have continued with musical studies in college have consistently placed out of at least the first two semesters of music theory and achieved advanced placement in their chosen fields of study. Those who chose a different path continue to benefit from the education and training they received from taking music lessons.

*** Lesson Details ***
There is no "standard formula" to lessons. Each student has their own unique background, needs, and goals. Lessons tend to be somewhat casual but are structured in such a way as to meet the unique requirements of the student.

To accomplish your goals, there are a few requirements and basic expectations that the student and parent must meet.
The first is practice. Students are expected to practice daily for at least the length of their lesson time. This, above all else, is essential to progress. It is also expected that a parent will attend lessons for students who are too young to drive themselves here. It's important for a parent to guide the student's practice time (particularly for younger students) to ensure that the most is gained from it. This is why I ask that a parent observe lessons.
Each student or parent should bring to each lesson a notebook, pencils (with erasers). The notebook will be used to record notes about each lesson, homework, practice advice, etc. Pencils (not pens...nobody's perfect!) are used by composers to record their creations and performers to mark their music. Both of these essential practices are subject to changing thought and must be open to change. So no ink, please!

Performers: It is not necessary to know how to read music at the first lesson for beginners. However, learning to read is required for subsequent lessons and will be a large focus for all non-readers. Lessons are not learned "by ear." A certain amount of theory will be a part of every lesson just as technique and repertoire. Concerning repertoire, it will be selected based on the student's learning needs but also with their input. The main emphasis on performance lessons, however, will be technique and reading. Students should come to the first lesson prepared to discuss their background & goals and the plan of their course of study.
Note: Voice students must be at least 16 years of age.

Composers: Just as with performers, it is not necessary to know how to read music at the first lesson. However, learning to read is required for subsequent lessons. Many young composers have great ideas but can only hear them in their heads or play them on an instrument. Lessons will allow you to obtain the skills to write them down with greater speed, accuracy, and clarity. More advance students will also include exploring a wider range of harmonic languages, advanced notation, instrumentation, orchestration, and aural skills. Students should come to the first lesson with examples of their work, either written, notated, or recorded in a digital format. They should be prepared to discuss their background & goals and the plan of their course of study.

IMPORTANT NOTES:
• To reschedule a lesson, more than one day notice is required.

• Make up lessons must be scheduled before the next regular lesson.

• A make up lesson cannot be scheduled in place of a regular lesson.

• If, for any reason, two 30-minute lessons are scheduled one right after the other, they will be charged as two 30-minute lessons, not one 60 minute lesson which is a different rate.

• If, for any reason, two 45-minute lessons are scheduled one right after the other, they will be charged as two 45-minute lessons, not one 90 minute lesson which is a different rate.

However, location was said to be 2.7 miles from me, it is actually 21 miles...... beware and double check!!

So far, I look forward to each lesson! Troy is very kind, yet very helpful and has helped me target on my personal goals with opera while also learning more each time! I highly recommend him. It doesn't matter if you have no experience in voice or only experience in voice ( as my experience is theatre and musical theatre), he is patient in helping you achieve the goals set. I cannot wait to continue lessons with him!

JANET F. BIOGRAPHY: Teaching Piano and Voice to young people is truly my first love. I enjoy coaching and encouraging pianists and vocalists whether they be a young beginner or an advanced player and offer over forty years of experience as a teacher, educator and performer.

"Quality begins with the teacher". A native of Jacksonville, Fl. I began my classical piano studies at the age of 5, under Mrs. Joy Warren who was a student of the renowned Dr. Leo Podolski. I remained with her for twelve years. A graduate of Stetson University School of Music, with a major in Piano and Voice. I studied piano performance under Dr. Roger Cushman, Senior Professor of Piano at Stetson University, who received his Masters and Doctorate at Yale and Oxford University. I studied Vocal Performance under Mollie Rich, Professor of Voice, and after rece
iving my Piano and Voice degree at Stetson University I chose to do further vocal study under Jane Rolandi, opera singer, and Professor of Voice at Converse College in South Carolina.

I am currently a member of the Texas Music Teachers Association (TMTA), Cypress Creek Music Teachers Association (CCMTA local chapter), The National Federation of Music Clubs (NFMC), Conroe Junior Music Club (CJMC) and The American College of Musicians. My studio is open to students of all ages and abilities, from beginners to advanced students preparing for competitions and all the way through to their college auditions. I believe in leading the pupil step by step; with no detail left undone.

I look forward to hearing from you and would like to set up a free consultation before lessons begin, because as a teacher I desire to maximize each students potential and offer you the opportunity to meet me and visit my studio within my home. Janet is the most knowledgeable and technical piano and voice teacher I have ever known. She pushes her students to be the absolute best while encouraging them along the way in their gifts. If you're serious about learning and becoming the best you can be in piano or voice, without a doubt Janet is the teacher for you! She expects a lot from her students, but puts in even more on her end to prepare you to be the best that you can be. You won't find another teacher around who cares about her job the way she does! She is a gem!!

Although you probably won't recognize the name of the small Bible College from which I received my degrees, I can assure you I received a well rounded education in both music and education. I began learning piano at about 8 years old, and for the past 10 years I have taken lessons from a master teacher, who understands not only the ins and outs of the technical side of playing the piano, but also what it takes to develop the musicality of a student. My voice teachers and choir directors have also had an excellent balance of technical skill and musical sense. I have taken a number of classes both in general education, and specifically on piano and choral pedagogy, as well as all the standard music classes such as music history and music theory. I am therefore prepared to adapt to the individual needs of most beginner and intermediate stude
nts desiring to pursue a further knowledge in music.

Everyone has unique needs and desires regarding an education in music. That is why I teach each student individually to help them achieve their goals. Just because I don't have a set methodology, however, doesn't mean that I teach chaotically. I balance the need for order and discipline with freedom of musical expression.

Out of personal experience I would like to say that Timothy Stabler is clearly an excellent music teacher. He is very patient, has a very high music-I.Q. and works with you according to your capabilities, learning abilities and own desire to progress. I'm a graduate of the Houston Grand Opera Studio and have been singing professionally around the world for 10 years now.

Argentinian bass-baritone Federico, who “sings with a deep-voiced authority” (Opera News) is a graduate of the prestigious Houston Grand Opera Studio, was previously a member of the Opera Studio of Teatro Argentino de La Plata, and a student at the Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía in Madrid.

This season, amongst other engagements, he will perform the role of Achilla in Julius Caesar with Houston Grand Opera. He will also perform the title role in Le Nozze di Figaro with Palm Beach Opera and make his debut with the Philladelphia Orchestra under the baton of Maestro Yannick Nézet-Séguin.

In the 2016/17 season, Federico performed Dr. Dulcamara in Houston Grand Opera’s production of L’Elisir d’Amore, conducted by Bradley Moore. Other performances included Brander in The Damnation of Faust with Aspen Music Festival conducted by Mae
stro Robert Spano, Timur in Turandot with the Des Moines Metro Opera and Mr. Flint in Billy Budd with the same company, both conducted by Maestro David Neely.

In previous seasons, Federico performed the role of Thomas Betterton in the world premiere of Carlisle Floyd’s Prince of Players conducted by Patrick Summers, Angelotti in Tosca, Zaretsky in Eugene Onegin, the King in The Little Prince, the cover of the title role and Antonio in The Marriage of Figaro, and selected scenes as Tiridate in Radamisto and Figaro, all at Houston Grand Opera. At the Auditorio Sony Madrid, the artist performed the roles of Leporello in Don Giovanni, the title role in Don Pasquale and Don Magnifico in La Cenerentola. While at the Opera Studio of Teatro Argentino de La Plata, Federico performed Don Alfonso in Così fan tutte, Antonio in Il viaggio a Reims, El Hombre Mayor in Gandini’s contemporary opera La ciudad ausente, Johann in Werther, Narrator in Rota’s I due timidi, Plutone in Il ballo dell’ingrate, and Tempo in Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria.

On the concert and recital stage, Federico has performed in a concert tour of Spain, organized by the Fundación Albéniz, a Christmas concert for the Royal Family of Spain at the Palacio Real de Madrid, as well as concerts with the Nürnberger Symphoniker in Nürnberg and Zindorf. Born in Buenos Aires, Federico received 3rd prize in the Eleanor McCollum Competition at the Houston Grand Opera, and was named “Outstanding Student” by Her Majesty Queen Sofía of Spain.

I have over 35 years experience teaching piano and voice. I've worked with students from beginners to professionals. My Bachelor's Degree is in Piano Performance and my Master's Degree is in Vocal Performance. For 26 years I taught at HCC Northwest College. Since then I have taught for Houston Piano Company and Lone Star College CyFair, in addition to maintaining my home private studio.

I have worked as a collaborative pianist with Houston Grand Opera, Des Moines Metro Opera, The Mississippi Opera, Opera in the Ozarks! Opera in the Heights, Harrower Opera Festival, and American institute of Musical Studies, Graz, Austria.

Each lesson consists of work on technical aspects (e.g., scales, Hanon exercises) relative to the student's performance experience. For beginners, I use the Alfred method books, choice depending on age of stud
