About Samuel
I've been a performing singer-songwriter since 1993. My influences include Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello, Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, and Richie Havens. I've been teaching private lessons since 2011.

We'll begin with major scales. That way, your fingers will get to know the notes that comprise the chords you'll eventually be learning. Eventually, you'll be able to play whole songs with both major and minor chords and play solos over them (also based on the scales).

I'm a primarily self-taught musician. The bulk of my knowledge came from listening to and imitating delta blues artists such as Robert Johnson and Mississippi John Hurt. Though you will have learned to play campfire standards in fewer than eight lessons, the blues (particularly the form originating from the Mississippi Delta) is the foundation of ALL A

merican music. The better you understand and are able to play it, the more options you will have created for yourself musically. Once you've gained confidence playing the blues, I'll introduce informal jazz. For more information about my curriculum, you may review my published articles on TakeLesson's Teacher Blog. I found Samuel to be very good at making me feel comfortable at acting, even though I'm a fairly introverted person. Also he adapts to the subject and managed to have me memorize 3 pages of script, which is not something I thought I anyone could get me to do.

About Aaron
I was an engineering tutor at University of Texas at Austin from 2006-2009. I graduated from UT with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering in 2009. I am very familiar with the UT engineering courses (from the beginning to the end).

While I was at UT, I also studied jazz drumming with Brannen Temple. I have been playing professionally for over ten years with lots of different bands. Teaching and playing music are the most gratifying things for me. But I also like to teach math!

I have been teaching high school math, physics, and music theory at Premier High School of North Austin for five years (2009-2014). I am a certified teacher by the state of Texas.

Normally, I don't write reviews for teachers until a couple of months have passed, but I acquiesce as TakeLessons keep on spamming me to write a review. Unlike other reviews, I'm not going to act as an echo chamber for five-star reviews. This review is based on two months with her after ten one hour online lessons through Skype.

Let's start with the positives. Denise puts in a good amount of effort in teaching you. She's flexible with accommodating your schedule, and she tailors her lessons based on what your goals are. This is evident from her referring to her notes when beginning her lessons with me. She also isn't a clock watcher who makes sure your lesson ends straight on the minute unlike some other teachers.

Is she effective as a speaking voice teacher? So far, yes there has been some progress made. Her methodology might be a bit more different than other speaking voice teachers I studied under. Other teachers focus more on the phonetic sounds, while Denise linger more toward stretches probably due to her dancing background. If you don't like Yoga type of stretches, you may be in for a bad time.

Keep in mind that due to my focus on developing a voice for acting, I'm also not having a pure speaking voice lesson as my lessons are intertwined with monologue work too. If you wish to take speaking voice lessons for public speaking, your mileage may vary.

So why a one-star deduction? Denise at the start can be pushy with trying to sell you more lessons. I mean it goes without saying that of course you'll see improvements faster if you can devote more time to any class, but time and money are factors that everyone should always consider. Let's be frank, private lessons on TakeLessons aren't cheap (unless you're rich of course). I was annoyed when she repeated her tactic three times, enough that it affected my decision to nearly not renew my monthly lessons with her.

She did cease when it seem like I wouldn't budge. Nevertheless, the pushiness did leave my experience a bit tainted, which made me question her sincereness with her excitement and positive reinforcement at times. I continue to give her a chance though because I do feel there's an ongoing improvement with my speech and line delivery. Also because we get along despite being complete opposites in some ways (which seem to frustrate and intrigue her). Despite being my teacher, I see her as a peer in a way because of how close in age we are, but I digress as this review is about her effectiveness as a teacher.

I would recommend giving Denise a try if you’re an actor seeking a speaking voice teacher. In person lessons are still best, but she has proven to be effective as an online teacher despite being a tad pushy with having you buy more lessons from her.

Denise did an amazing job. She had great energy and helped get me more excited about learning the proper skills. I wasn’t able to continue classes at the moment but when I do she is the only person I will learn from. Was understanding of my odd schedule and very flexible which I appreciated very much.

Hello! I am an avid musician around town, a graduate from UT Austin with a B.S. in Mathematcs, and I just finished my first year of service with Americorps teaching literacy! I’m extremely passionate about helping others learn and express themselves. Guitar is a cornerstone of my life and being able to share my 14 years of knowledge with others, guide them, and help them learn to play their favorite music on stage or write their own songs is amazing. From studios downtown, to the stage during SXSW, I offer experience based teaching on everything guitar and music. I have always loved math since I was young and was very excited to study it in college. I understand that this can be a frustrating subject, and I aim to get my students to a high level of preparedness and comfortability that will transfer over into their performance in the class
room and tests. I aim for the same high level of performance in math in reading as well. I have always loved reading but I never knew how to teach this important skill. During my service term with Americorps, I gained the knowledge and skills to teach early literacy and get students reading at grade level or help them get a head start in their elementary school.

I hired Bruno to help me comprehend my book for class. He showed up and genuinely cared that I was getting it. He showed me a note taking idea that to me seemed that if I just wrote a couple of ideas down I’d go back and know where I was as far as going back and studying. He asked if I needed to write this point down and basically showed how to do the job. Great work.

Mr. Barbosa is a very outgoing person who always checks in on his students before we begin the lesson. At the
beginning of the lesson, we start with warm-ups so our voice is
ready to sing high or low notes. When you first start with Mr. Bar-
bosa, he will have you sing multiple songs and scales so he can
learn your vocal range. Mr. Barbosa makes sure that you understand
the content and if you don't, he is helpful and explains it in a way we
can comprehend. Lessons are a great way to improve your singing.
I’m becoming more comfortable performing in front of my peers.
