Hsin-Jung has been teaching and performing in both Taiwan and the U.S. for years. She is a patient, professional music instructor, and would like to bring the joy of classical music to all students.

[Biography]

Hsin-Jung T., a native of Taipei, Taiwan began her piano studies at the age of five, and composition studies at 18. She attended the Hua-Kang Art School in Taipei, where she majored in piano performance. In 1996 she received a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Music Theory and Composition from the Taipei National University of the Arts, Taiwan, where she studied with Nan-Chang Chien. Hsin-Jung then came to the United States in the fall of 1997 to study at the Aaron Copland School of Music, Queens College of City University of New York (CUNY), where she received her Master of Music Degree in 1999 while studying wit
h Bruce Saylor. In 2000, she studied at the PhD-DMA program in music composition at the CUNY Graduate Center, where she is studying with Tania Leon and Bernadette Speech.

Through her involvement in programs such as the Taiwan-Japan Exchange Concert “Euterpe Spring ‘99”, conductors Sung Su Jeong, Chun-Fung Lee, and Lance Inouye as well as the Juilliard String Ensemble, the Contemporary Chamber Orchestra of Taipei, and others have performed Hsin-Jung's compositions in Japan, Taiwan, and the United States. In May 2000 Hsin-Jung held a program of her chamber music at Weill Recital Hall, Carnegie Hall. Among her recent works are two film collaborations, Poetry of A Painter, a clarinet solo piece composed for a short film on the life of the artist Fernando Gerassi; the score for Allatonceness, a multimedia performance where the composer also conducted; music design and improvisation for a documentary film Turning Japanese; music for Palace of Loneliness, a play by Dorothy Tan, produced by MultiStages, Inc. and HERE Theatre for the Performing Arts in New York; The Music Composition Award for Capturing The Spirit of the promotive film from Asian American/ Asian Research Institute in New York (2002); and the score for a documentary film Ocean and People produced by Civilization Explorer Association [CEA] (2005). In 2006 Hsin-Jung was invited as a guest composer and held a solo composition recital at Tarrant County College South Campus, Fort Worth, Texas.

In 2008, Hsin-Jung relocated to Houston, where she has been actively contributing her compositions, as well as performing as an improvisational artist.

*** Lesson Details ***
I am patient, and detailed. High concentration and certain skills are necessary in learning classical music; thus, I will be focus on build up student's concentration, fingering skill (writing skill in composition), and understanding of music. Students will learn how to play in a beautiful tune, how to "listen" with both ears and heart, and how to concentrate on what they are doing, and most important -- enjoy what they are playing, and what they are composing!

I have been teaching this subject for over 16 years. The main curriculum for beginners is Alfred's Basic Piano Library. There are three beginner levels (beginner, late, adult) and one will be selected after the first meeting. For non-beginning students, the course of study will be developed based on past experience, current abilities, and goals. It is not necessary to know how to read music at the first lesson for beginners. However, learning to read is a part of subsequent lessons. Music is not learned "by ear." A certain amount of theory will be a part of every lesson just as technique and repertoire. Students should come to the first lesson prepared to discuss their background & goals and the plan of their course of study.

About Troy
Composer Troy W. graduated from the New England Conservatory, earning his Bachelors, Masters (cum laude) and Graduate Diploma while studying with mentor Malcolm Peyton. After spending a year studying with Lukas Foss in Boston, Mr. W. moved to Houston in 2001 where he continued graduate studies at Rice University's Shepherd School of Music.

During his time as a teacher with the Michael P. Hammond Preparatory Program at Rice University's Shepherd School of Music, Troy taught classes in music fundamentals and music theory for pre-college students. He has also served on the faculty of the Summer Institute for Piano teaching courses in Form & Analysis for pre-college students.

Troy also has maintained a private studio, tutoring and teaching private lessons in composition, ear training, voice, piano, literature, and history for over ten
years. Students who have studied with him come from a wide range of backgrounds with different goals. Those who have continued with musical studies in college have consistently placed out of at least the first two semesters of music theory and achieved advanced placement in their chosen fields of study. Those who chose a different path continue to benefit from the education and training they received from taking music lessons.

*** Lesson Details ***
There is no "standard formula" to lessons. Each student has their own unique background, needs, and goals. Lessons tend to be somewhat casual but are structured in such a way as to meet the unique requirements of the student.

To accomplish your goals, there are a few requirements and basic expectations that the student and parent must meet.
The first is practice. Students are expected to practice daily for at least the length of their lesson time. This, above all else, is essential to progress. It is also expected that a parent will attend lessons for students who are too young to drive themselves here. It's important for a parent to guide the student's practice time (particularly for younger students) to ensure that the most is gained from it. This is why I ask that a parent observe lessons.
Each student or parent should bring to each lesson a notebook, pencils (with erasers). The notebook will be used to record notes about each lesson, homework, practice advice, etc. Pencils (not pens...nobody's perfect!) are used by composers to record their creations and performers to mark their music. Both of these essential practices are subject to changing thought and must be open to change. So no ink, please!

Performers: It is not necessary to know how to read music at the first lesson for beginners. However, learning to read is required for subsequent lessons and will be a large focus for all non-readers. Lessons are not learned "by ear." A certain amount of theory will be a part of every lesson just as technique and repertoire. Concerning repertoire, it will be selected based on the student's learning needs but also with their input. The main emphasis on performance lessons, however, will be technique and reading. Students should come to the first lesson prepared to discuss their background & goals and the plan of their course of study.
Note: Voice students must be at least 16 years of age.

Composers: Just as with performers, it is not necessary to know how to read music at the first lesson. However, learning to read is required for subsequent lessons. Many young composers have great ideas but can only hear them in their heads or play them on an instrument. Lessons will allow you to obtain the skills to write them down with greater speed, accuracy, and clarity. More advance students will also include exploring a wider range of harmonic languages, advanced notation, instrumentation, orchestration, and aural skills. Students should come to the first lesson with examples of their work, either written, notated, or recorded in a digital format. They should be prepared to discuss their background & goals and the plan of their course of study.

IMPORTANT NOTES:
• To reschedule a lesson, more than one day notice is required.

• Make up lessons must be scheduled before the next regular lesson.

• A make up lesson cannot be scheduled in place of a regular lesson.

• If, for any reason, two 30-minute lessons are scheduled one right after the other, they will be charged as two 30-minute lessons, not one 60 minute lesson which is a different rate.

• If, for any reason, two 45-minute lessons are scheduled one right after the other, they will be charged as two 45-minute lessons, not one 90 minute lesson which is a different rate.

Troy is a really patient instructor. I started these lessons as an adult with no prior musical training. I am enjoying the lessons and despite the fact that I never quite have enough time to practice as I should, sometimes even only having the lesson time with him, I still feel I made some progress. I also enjoy the discussions we have on music theory. I am trained as a scientist and when I read theory I have parse it through my own way of thinking about things. I find that Troy is a really good teacher and able to communicate in a manner that is easy to understand. I highly recommend him!

About Thomas
Thomas J. W. is an active music teacher, composer, adjudicator, and clinician in the greater Philadelphia area. He has over fifteen years experience as a concert band director, marching band director, jazz improvisation instructor, choral director, private instructor, and marching drill writer. His directing career has included small rural band programs, small metro programs, large high-achieving suburban programs, and non-profit youth bands. In addition to his band compositions, he also has over forty unpublished vocal arrangements to his credit, most written for use with collegiate men's a cappella groups. Thomas taught over 600 online and local private music lessons in 2016.

Thomas has a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education from The Pennsylvania State University. He holds a teaching certificate in the states of Pennsylvania
and New Jersey and has taught at the secondary level in both states. In addition to both instrumental and choral ensembles at Penn State, Thomas was a student leader in the Penn State Blue Band and a member of the brass section of the Cadets of Bergen County Drum and Bugle Corps in 1993 and 1994. He served as an Associate Director of the Warren Junior Military Band of Youngstown, Ohio from 1995 to 2005. He also served as a visual staff member for the renowned North Penn Marching Knights of Lansdale, PA for one season in 2004.

He is a current adjudicator with Drum Corps International and Cavalcade of Bands. He is a member of MENC, PMEA, NJMEA, ASCAP, CASA, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, and the National Band Association. He appeared in the Marquis Who's Who Among American Educators in 2004 and 2005, an honor rarely bestowed upon teachers, as students who appear in the Who's Who Among American High School Students must nominate them. He currently is a music teacher at the Center for Performing and Fine Arts of the PA Leadership Charter School in West Chester, PA and resides in Downingtown, PA with his wife and two sons.

Thomas will happily work with students on the autism spectrum or students with ADD.

*** Lesson Details ***
My lessons are tailored to the needs and interests of each student. If a student is involved in school music ensembles, we will work with their lesson books from school in addition to material outside of the books, including SmartMusic, Noteflight, and teacher-created materials. We will focus on building proper tone production and individual technique - something that often is difficult to learn in a large ensemble setting.

I am capable of starting a beginner student on any band instrument including percussion, any classical string instrument (violin, viola, cello, string bass), and piano. I can begin a student on drum set and work with them through their first method book, but I would then recommend they find a specialized drum set teacher after a period of six to twelve months.

For advanced students, I work from selected conservatory etude books on developing advanced skills and can work with students on audition pieces for honors bands/orchestras or college auditions.

My lessons are a half-hour once a week, with the option of working for 45 minutes or 60 minutes.

My son was very nervous about his first online lesson. His instructor had him start right in on the lesson, which helped my son quickly get over his nerves. Our 8 year old son had his first Guitar lesson with Dee this past weekend, and she was amazing. She wasted no time getting down to brass tacks with our son, showing him the various parts of the guitar, how to hold it and within minutes he knew two chords. She was able to keep our kiddo engaged, offered great praise and positive feedback/reinforcement and kept him on task for the entire 45 minute lesson. We could not be happier and cannot wait to see what he learns during his next lessons with her!

Carl was a member of KU Jazz Ensemble I, KU Saxophone Quartet I, and KU's Helianthus New Music Ensemble. As a member of KU's Jazz Ensemble 1, Carl has performed with Dave Douglas, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Alex Sipiagin, Steve Owen, Gary Foster, Steve Houghton, Clint Ashlock, David von Kampen, Peter Epstein, Jeff Miley, James Miley, Roger Shew, and Brian Hamada, Brandon Draper, Rich Wheeler, Beau Bledsoe, Jeff Harshbarger, and Matt Otto. In July 2014, Carl went on a European tour with KU Jazz Ensemble I featuring Steve Leisring and Deborah Brown. Together, they performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, the Vienne Jazz Festival in France, and performed in several cities in Germany. Recordings by this band resulted in KU winning the DownBeat Student Award (Graduate College Large Jazz Ensemble Division) in 2015.

While at OSU, Carl was a GTA for the saxophone studio and music theory programs. His responsibilities included Music Theory I-IV tutoring and grading, sight-singing grading, piano labs, classical and jazz saxophone lessons, saxophone quartet coaching, saxophone studio Webmaster, and saxophone studio class. Carl was a member of the OSU Wind Ensemble and Jazz Ensemble 1. He had a regularly performing jazz trio and played in OSU's X2End saxophone quartet. The X2End quartet performed locally at the 2011 Navy Band Saxophone Symposium in Washington D.C., at the 2011 NASA Region IV Conference, and has won the state and division rounds of the 2010-2011 MTNA Chamber Music Competition. The X2End quartet went on to win the 3rd place prize at the national final round of the MTNA Chamber Music Competition. They also were the Division II Chamber Ensemble winners at the 2011 Hubbard Music Competition where they were awarded the 2nd place prize in the overall finals. Carl's final degree paper at OSU was a study of composer/performer collaboration. He traveled to Texas, Michigan, and Ohio to interview saxophonists and composers including David Dees, Peter Fischer, John Sampen, Marilyn Shrude, Joe Lulloff, and Charles Ruggiero. He has presented his lecture at the 2011 Navy Band Saxophone Symposium, the 2011 NASA Region IV Conference, and the 2012 OSU Single Reed Summit. As a member of OSU's Jazz Ensemble 1, he has performed with Bob Sheppard, Conrad Herwig, Wayne Bergeron, and Andy Martin.

While at SWOSU, Carl performed as a member of the marching band, wind ensemble, Jazz Ensemble A, saxophone quartet, and his own jazz combo named Five-Seven. As a member of SWOSU's Jazz Ensemble A, he has performed with Dan Haerle, Bob Bowman, Jack Mouse, Fred Forney, Janice Borla, Eddie Daniels, Pamela York, Lynn Seaton, Carl Allen, Dr. Michael Cox, Tom Williams, Dr. Robert Chambers, Dave Hanson, Drori Mondlak, Delores Williams, Byron Stripling, Frank Wess, Kenny Drew Jr., Dennis Mackrel, Bill Watrous, Rich Eames, Jennifer Leitham, and Randy Drake.

Carl enjoys recording several instruments in his home studio and composing new music. As an advocate of new music involving the saxophone, he has participated in a commissioning consortium for Alone Together by composer David MacDonald through Kick Starter. In 2013, Carl performed the premier of Cuento #3 by Nelson Ramirez Diaz. During summer of 2014, he recorded selections from Dr. John Walker's "The Alto Saxophone in the Attic," published by Carl Fischer. At the 10th Annual SDSU/Brookings Optimist Jazz Festival in 2015, Carl directed SDSU Jazz Ensemble I's premier of Dog, Tired by David von Kampen.

Carl is a Conn-Selmer Endorsing Artist. He hosted the North American Saxophone Alliance Region 3 (ND, SD, NE, MN, IA) Conference at South Dakota State University on March 17-18, 2017. On Saturday, April 8, 2017, Carl performed Dreams in the Dusk by David Biedenbender with South Dakota State University's Wind Symphony, directed by Dr. Jacob Wallace. On Monday, February 6, 2017, Carl performed the premiere of Lhotse for alto saxophone and percussion by Steve Danyew with Dr. Aaron Ragsdale. In April 2017, Carl performed solo tenor saxophone and orchestral clarinet in Ethan Bortnick's national PBS Special called "Generations of Music," which featured special guest, Peter Yarrow, from Peter, Paul and Mary.

I am experiences in trumpet and piano, trumpet being my main instrument, been playing both approximately over 25 years. I have in Associate degree in Music education.
I have self taught myself to sing alto, guitar, handbells, organ, percussion and french horn for approximately over 15 years. I start learning music off and on from at the age of 10. I started on piano and off I went from piano to trumpet. An along the way I pick up the guitar, voice, percussion, handbells and french horn. I love learning and teaching music to others.

For young one's on the trumpet, we will work on learning how to make sounds with big breathes, how to breathe and the name of the notes.

As for Junior High/High School or Adults level I will help them with anything they are learning in the school band like "etudes, solo's scale's or anything they bring to the lessons. For trumpet players, I well use any books they are using in school band or a book I think they may need based on their level; I will let them use my book also with the encouragement to bring any music they like or love. I will always make lessons fun and educational.

* Age 10 – 13: Music Theory “Base on their level,” Trumpet Book, Exercise Book “Long Tone, Lip slur/Tonguing,” Piece, Fun Song and Major/Minor scales. I try to also do anything they need to work on for school/band.
* Age 14 – Adults: I base it on the level of the student, Music Theory “Base on their level,” Trumpet Book, Exercise Book “Long Tone, Lip slur/Tonguing,” Piece, Fun Song, any etudes and Major/Minor Scales. I try to also do anything they need to work on for school/band.

For the younger students I enjoy teaching them the name of the letters and the placement of their hands on the piano. My teaching aides include, colors, name games, color pages, flashcards along with songs I have composed or will buy for them. I always encourage students to play any song they like.

* Age 8 – 9: Level 1 Music Theory, Lesson Book, Technical Book, Fun Song.

Good day!
After having taught piano for a few years now, my students have been successful learning the fundamentals of piano playing. The most popular beginner piano books do not actually start as easy as they possibly can. I have a list of songs that the student will start off with that are easier than the typical first songs on a book. After these songs have been learned, the student will play from the Alfred piano books. Eventually, the student will be able to play more advanced songs and pieces like Fur Elise. The parents provide the student with music books and a metronome. I will also encourage parents to get music that the child likes, as long as its easy enough.

You may think it’s strange to talk about a story that is unrelated to music, but read on to find out why this story is important to Alex’s life as a music teacher. Alex has always been a curious guy. Having worn glasses for his entire life, Alex was interested to see what contacts were like. Usually, he would have just accepted what he was told. However, this time, he was determined to wear contacts. So, Alex attended a different eye doctor rather than his original doctor. Even then, he was told that he would not be able to wear contacts. But he was still determined to try them out. Surprisingly, the contacts worked! Little did Alex know that this would be the start of a different chapter in his life.

It was perhaps not surprising, then, that a new emphasis on education had begun to develop. Shortly afterwards, Alex accepted a new job
as a piano teacher at the Piano Studio. Using the lessons he had learned from his visit to the doctor, he started to form his philosophy on teaching. No matter what the challenges of the student, Alex will always strive to work through those challenges and do his best to successfully teach that student.

There have been a few piano beginners that have come by the Piano Studio that were assigned to Alex’s teaching roster. When they started, they were clearly some of the hardest beginners he has had to work with. One parent even remarked that her child would be impossible to teach. That parent was fortunately wrong! For months, now, this student follows Alex's instructions very clearly and has been paying attention every lesson. This is an example of how Alex's tenacity has paid off.

With a full studio of nearly twenty students per week while attending San Jacinto College, Alex stuck by with this principle of never giving up. Even when it seemed discouraging, he never gave up on any of his students as long as his students never give up on themselves. This, he believes, is what separates teachers who are passionate at their work, and teachers who just try to get by.

Currently, Alex teaches at a piano studio in Webster, TX, while attending the University of St. Thomas. Additionally, he performs weekly at a local Church as the staff organist and pianist.

Edward's a very patient teacher and accomplished pianist. I've played the piano a bit on my own, but he gave me a detailed orientation into the theoretical side and technical side of piano. He gives me a large plate of work every week, and expects me to do this work. My progress isn't immediate, but it's going smoothly and it IS progress. I would suggest Edward for both begginers berly learning and for experienced players trying to learn more. Don't be shy with him. He can be a bit qwerky, but there is a method to his madness.

I have studied under Alex for some time now and I think he is the best instructor in the Houston area. I would highly recommend him because of his teaching style and is also one of the best players around. 10/10 Edward displays an extremely professional attitude about everything he does and has shown himself to be dedicated to becoming an outstanding musician and teacher. He is also a very accomplished Piano, Trumpet & improviser, a very sensitive player and a very musical individual.

I haven’t taken lessons from Edward, but we have played together since high school band. I’ve seen him play in concerts as a soloist and he is very musical on both piano and trumpet. We also played a trumpet solo with piano accompaniment that he wrote and it was a list of fun. He’s a great guy to work with and is very understanding of any problems you’re having as a musician. I’d definitely recommend Edward as a lesson teacher for both trumpet and piano.

I am a pianist, songwriter, and keyboard player and backup singer for a prog-rock band and also a music teacher.

I've been teaching music for a long time. Why? Because I love music and I love to teach. My mission statement: get you to enjoy music while learning.

The best moments on my work are when the students realize that they can play/sing something that they couldn't do before. I love their expressions at that moment.

I started playing music when I was 7: the recorder, the Spanish guitar, a double keyboard organ that I used to learn how to play the piano by myself. Later on, I started with official piano lessons and ended with my BA in piano.

My training was classical but I love new age music and jazz.

During my piano lessons, you can learn theory, composition, play classical music and know the differences between diffe

My 12 year old daughter took vocal lessons from Laura. She used pop music which was perfect for my daughter’s age. Oftentimes my daughter picked out her music so Laura knows how to engage kids. Laura’s great and would highly recommend.

I met Laura in the summer of 2018 while searching for a voice coach for my 12 year old daughter. My daughter was comfortable with her from the first minute. She is eager to go to her lessons and smiling when she leaves. Laura likes to start with the basics and has an eye for identifying anything unique about her students voice that she can encourage and refine. My daughters voice and confidence have grown immensely. She just performed a solo in a talent show and received rave reviews from her peers and chorus instructors. More importantly, my daughter is finding her own voice and enjoying every moment of it thanks to Laura.

While I was at Indiana University, I had the great fortune of studying with Ardalan! He was an incredibly patient teacher who was able to cater to what I needed individually. I took piano lessons with Ardalan for quite a while. He’s knowledgeable, patient and caring. He is experienced working with both adults and children and modifies his approach to meet each student’s needs. I had a bad experience learning music when I was a child and was reluctant to take lessons as an adult. Ardalan definitely helped me gain that confidence back and feel that I could actually enjoy the music while learning it. Besides his teaching skills, Ardalan is a wonderful artist and anyone who takes a class with him will look forward to each session and learn a lot from him.
