Trombone was my first instrument and I have studied classical and jazz for over 15 yrs.

About Michael
Michael has worked with kids for 10 years in schools and arts programs to find fun and their best self through performance. He has taught orchestra, chamber music, jazz band and music theory in the public schools, while performing in local ensembles in and around the city. He also has studied drama, voice and movement and believes all these skills help in expressing yourself--no matter what pieces you want to play!

In addition to working with students K-12, he also loves working with adults. I try to provide a nurturing atmosphere for someone trying revive or discover previously hidden musical interests!

*** Lesson Details ***
We begin with what we love. The student usually chooses one of his or her favorite songs to interpret. Later, we add music, usually from the classical or jazz fields, that build our skills and help us f
eel successful. All technique is based on real music. Learning scales, keys and music theory become part of the music. By the end of 6 months, we will have a "repertoire" of several songs that express our best self!

Motivated

I'm a senior citizen that still works. I played some other instruments when I was younger and always wanted to play piano and Michael has motivated me to continue to learn and fit my practice into my work schedule. Anyone who wants to learn to play an instrument should look no further then Michael.

My beginning trombone students will learn trombone playing basics, care, as well as how to read notes of the bass clef. Basic music theory, along with major scales, will also be taught (time signatures, note durations, etc.). Students will learn technical skills as well as musical skills in a comfortable, fun environment. :) Typically, I will use the "Essential Elements" book series, but I may sometimes deviate.

About Elyse
Who has music and teaching as their biggest passion?

See below... :)

Hello, Parents & Students!
My name is Elyse (the answer is me!), and I teach a wide array of great (mainly musical) things! Thank you for checking out my page!
A few key points to know about me:
*I graduated from Kent State University (Kent, OH) in December, 2009, with my Bachelor of Music in Music Education degree (Magna cum Laude).
*I’ve taught music in small ensembles and marching band camps since July, 2007.
*I taught from 2010-2016 in the Texas Public Schools as a General Music teacher/Choir Director.
*I taught theatre for one year.
*I am a VERY enthusiastic, fun-loving teacher who enjoys laughter and bringing smiles to my students.
*I do, however, structure our lessons in such a way that we have that fun while remaining on track.
*The Clarinet was m
y instrument of study in college.
*RANDOM: I love to read, sing, and listen to music, I love cats, chocolate, and my family/friends. Pink is my favorite color, and Hanson is my favorite band!
*My most recent new student, after his second lesson, asked if he could take piano more than once a week because “it’s so fun!” 😊

***Philosophy***
—If you're going to make a mistake, make a loud one!—

-My students know (I make sure of this) right off the bat that it's okay to make mistakes! My philosophy is: YOU make mistakes. Mistakes don't make YOU. We fix them together, and we learn together. Also: never apologize for making a mistake; that is why we’re working together and you’re practicing at home!

***Teaching Style***
-I'm definitely a fun-loving, outgoing person.
-My teaching style is tailored to each of my students;
- I try to think-outside-the-box as much as possible and utilize creativity.
-I talk as little as possible in lessons; my goal is for the student to play as much as possible. With beginners, I may have to talk a bit more.
-I often model for the student what they should do: example: middle c position on the piano.
-If seeing ME isn’t enough for my visual learners, I will utilize a video clip.
-For my tactile learners, sometimes I have to move their fingers into position myself.
-For my sound learners, I will play or sing a pitch, show them the slide position or fingering to that note, and have them try to match it by ear.
-I also question my students.
-I have many other techniques as well.
-I am VERY much pro Positive Reinforcement!

*** Lesson details ***
-I am NOT a rigid teacher; I am pretty relaxed.
-However, I am VERY adamant about practicing between lessons - no matter what type of instrument you may be learning. It is the only way to improve. :)
-We will ALWAYS begin with a warm-up, we may/may not move into rhythm exercises, possible ear training, music theory, and your music.
-The list of all that I teach is on my page, but I teach all wind instruments (woodwind/brass), piano, and voice. I also teach acting techniques and improvisation skills.

***Students’ responsibility:***
-Daily practice is strongly recommended. It is important and necessary for steady progress.
-For piano lessons, students should have neat, clean, trimmed nails at every lesson.
-Students should bring water to voice lessons.
-Reed players should ensure they have working/non-cracked reeds.
-Brass players should ensure all valves/slides are oiled/greased.
-Students must be prepared for each lesson.

***Parents’ responsibility:***
-Parents should remain until their child’s lesson is complete.
-Parents should regularly check and support the students practice routine.

*** Studio Equipment ***
-One Yamaha keyboard w/pedal; space for parents to sit and observe lessons.
-Music stand
-Square chairs to sit on

IMPORTANT NOTE: My home, where my studio is located, is inhabited by four very sweet cats. Keep this in mind when you plan to sign up for lessons. :)

Miss Elyse is FUN and so funny! My lessons with her go by too fast. She gives me really good practice tips about playing hands apart, then slowly adding them together. Miss Elyse got me to use my metronome the right way, too. My music is fun too.

With a Bachelor's in Music Education and 12 years of study in Low Brass and Band, Jonathan is able to customize each lesson to the individual student's needs and goals in order to optimize enjoyment and results.

Both solo and ensemble skills can be developed under Jonathan's study for trombone players.

About Jonathan
Jonathan received his training at Houston Baptist University in 2016 where he received a degree in Music Education. Jonathan has taught lessons through public school districts, Guitar Center Lessons (where he served as instructor and later as Department Manager) and as an independent private teacher.

Jonathan is also a professional musician, performing shows around the city every week.
Thanks to his expert training, Jonathan is able to customize and adjust every lesson to suit each student's individual needs and learning traits in order to optimize enjoyment and success.

In lessons, all facets of music can be addressed, including music theory, tempo and rhythm, improvisation and soloing, grooves, ear training and any other techniques needing to be developed.

Study into specific genres is also an option, including jazz, funk, s
oul, R&B, reggae, latin, rock, pop, metal, etc.

Another major focus in lessons is helping each student develop their own "voice" in their playing. This is the most rewarding part of being a musician, as learning how to develop your playing to channel your own mental, physical and emotional feelings and ideas leads to great self discovery, self confidence and awareness. It is also a great stress reliever and can be very therapeutic!

Lessons with Jonathan are highly engaging and educational, but they are also fun! Jonathan creates a lesson plan unique to each student's needs and skills to ensure maximum results and progression inside of a comfortable and fun atmosphere! All the educational material means nothing if you aren't finding the enjoyment and fun in the lesson to actually practice and learn the material outside of it! Jonathan approaches lessons with a professional and laid-back demeanor looking to keep a smile and interest on the student's face from the beginning of the lesson to the end!

My passion is teaching the trombone. I have started beginners, taught middle, high school, and university students. As a member of a professional orchestra for many years, I have experience performing many different styles of music and love to share my enthusiasm for the trombone with others. Lessons are rooted in a firm foundation of technique, focusing on efficient sound production and ease of playing. I love helping students reach their potential!

About Laurie
I am a professional trombonist and pianist and have three degrees from the University of Michigan, including a D.M.A. in Trombone Performance. Students will find me to be encouraging, yet demanding. I cater to different learning styles and strive to learn how each student learns best.

Professional jazz trombonist with 5 years of teaching experience! Especially experienced in teaching beginners.
Proficient in teaching all styles of music to all ages and levels.
Lessons are customized and catered to the needs/goals of each student. Instead of simply training students to read music and play notes, I prefer to teach my students to think, play, and act like musicians. My lessons feature improvisation skills, sight-reading, playing by ear, building a strong technical foundation and music analysis.

I assure you will see leaps of improvement by working with me!

About Alejandro
I'm a professional trombonist with a strong musical background: I have a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Music Performance - Trombone from City College of New York and Michigan State University. I have 7 years of experience teaching students of all ages and levels, and I have been working as a freelancer since I was 17.

I originally arrived in NYC from Argentina at 9-years old. The rich musical environment of NYC allowed me to study and absorb all styles of music at a young age.

I have had the opportunities to study with trombone masters such as Michael Dease, Jason Jackson and Wycliffe Gordon. These learning experiences directly affect the development of my students.

I currently play in a wide range of musical situations all over NYC, from jazz combos and big bands, to musicals and classical orchestras and even other genres such as
Reggea, Ska, Rock, Pop etc.

As my student, you will develop critical skills that will help build a strong musical foundation which will define you as a musician. I will evaluate the level in which you currently are and provide a clear defined path in order to reach our goals.
One thing I strongly focus on is your love for music. My goal is not only to see you progress, but to love the music and have fun with what you are playing.

I can't wait to work with you and help you reach your ultimate goals!

I recently started playing the trombone, Alejandro has helped me on so many levels. As a beginner student i was a bit nervous since i thought it wouldn't be worth it, but he gave me the foundation and the confidence to keep learning. His class is fun and inspiring! Alejandro is a great musician with the heart of a teacher!

I went to Mr Espinosa's home to take my lesson - the place is right next to the 135th subway stop, very convenient! Mr Espinosa was patient, understanding, and friendly. I was a little worried that a professional like him would laugh at the embarrassing skills of an adult like mine - didn't happen. He was down to earth despite his great playing, kind of more like a friend or a big buddy rather than a teacher. I think our lesson brought me much improvement! He also taught me some helpful daily practice routines. Another little touching detail was he provided me with free drinks and snacks, something none of my other teachers have done before. His studio was also fully equipped: it has a piano, great stereo, stands, and music books.

Students can expect to develop a strong foundation in trombone method. Students will learn how to read music, proper way to make a sound, proper breathing techniques, and simple melodies suitable for beginners. As the student becomes more comfortable, they will be challenged to play more challenging music that pushes the limits of their dexterity.

About Kenneth
It all started when I took my first drum lesson in the 4th grade. From then on, I wanted to play whenever I could. I played in all my school bands from middle school to high school. Graduated Southern University, home of the world famous "Human Jukebox" which I was a member of for 3 years, as well as playing for my church since I was 13.

Along the way I have had the honor of meeting and learning from respected musicians such as Lawrence Jackson (former director of SU Bands), Herman Jackson (Brother of Randy Jackson), Jerry Lee Lane (Marching percussion pioneer) and countless others.

As a drummer that has played in all kinds of styles and venues, I can teach any skill level from the first time picking up sticks to making good drummers great and great drummers legendary.

Using my experience as a school band director (4 years), I
will come up with a customized lesson plan for each of my students that will stay on the best possible path to success. It is also because of this experience that I am also able to teach all concert/jazz band instrument method (ex. trumpet, flute, electric bass, etc.)

I have been involved in music since I was about 8 years old. I began by taking drum lessons and my teacher inspired me to always go above and beyond when it comes to your instrument. It is my hope that I can bring that same enthusiasm and inspire future students the same way.

Professional musician/composer/arranger

About Travis
I have 20 years of experience teaching in which I have taught band students from fifth grade through college. I have been an adjunct professor of a local college. Building relationships and using differentiated instruction with students has been a key element in guiding them to success. Students under my leadership have made the Texas All-Region Bands, Texas All-Area Bands, Texas All-State Concert Bands, and Texas All-State Jazz Bands.
I have taught jazz bands, theory, private lessons, and music appreciation courses in addition to teaching band classes.
In 2012, I created the Jazz Trombone Workshop geared for high school tenor and bass trombone players who are wanting to learn more about the art of jazz trombone. In the inaugural year, Grammy Award winning trombonist Mark Gonzales of the band Grupo Fantasma was guest clinician at th
