Jane H.

Chicago, IL

About Jane

I am a graduate of Lawrence University with a BA in Music (Piano) and German. I've played piano for almost 20 years, but in college performed more with voice. In college as a BA candidate I was able to take a variety of lessons, including classical piano (my major), jazz piano, classical voice, and jazz voice. One of my favorite projects in college included a recital comprised of all the types of music I love playing and learning about such as a solo piano piece, a few piano duets, a piece where I sang and accompanied myself, a vocal jazz small group, and a few others.

I'm currently workin
g in a jazz trio with a guitarist and trumpeter playing (and singing) tunes from tons of different genres, such as Erykah Badu's "Window Seat", Thom Yorke's "Eraser", Incubus' "Anti-Gravity Love Song", Ceu's "Cangote", a handful of different jazz standards, and much more. The trio project is a good example of all the types of music I love to sing and teach.

My goal for the next year is to complete a 12 track album with my trio. Just thinking about it is exciting!!

Taking lessons with me I can teach you specifics on classical voice or piano and jazz voice or piano, but we can also work on combining them!

*** Lesson Details ***
Lessons with me will be laid-back but focused. Each student will receive an individualized curriculum based upon their needs/wants from their lessons. Believe me, I've had some bone-dry teachers in the past, and if you're not having fun and liking what you're doing, you're most likely going to forget the lesson you just had. We're going to learn by having fun and doing what I love most!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Music room, full-sized live-action keyboard, two chairs and bench, mirror, room for parents wait

*** Travel Equipment ***
Students need to have a piano or a full-sized keyboard on which to practice or have lessons.

*** Specialties ***
Personally I am interested in many different genres of music (classical voice, jazz voice, classical piano, jazz piano, accompanying), and in college I was able to take many different kinds of lessons to fulfill my needs. As a result, I feel very comfortable teaching others about all sorts of different genres of music.

Jane is VERY patient and super fun! Our daughter is a tough cookie, but she absolutely adores Miss Jane and has done her best piano work since starting with her. I highly recommend her! And the ability for lessons to be in the home is just beyond convenient.

We had our first lesson with Jane last night. Lily is a tough cookie, but Jane handled her REALLY well. Also LOVE having the lesson in our home. With our busy schedules, it's nice being able to keep my daughter in lessons but not have to trek her to a school.

We're looking forward to a long relationship with Jane (hopefully)!

Benjamin K.

Chicago, IL

About Benjamin

I have extensively studied vocal performance and opera for many years and continue to add to my own technique. I have a Master's in vocal performance from the Chicago College of Performing Arts. I have studied other vocal genres, such as jazz, rock, and pop. I have previously taught at The School of Rock in Indianapolis Indiana. I have administered vocal lessons to every voice type at all different levels. Several of my students have recored albums and are currently performing all over the U.S.

I have a bachelors degree in biology with a minor in art. After graduating college, I was a full
-time high school biology teacher, volleyball coach, and director of the school musical. As a high school teacher, I learned first hand the kind of pressure and expectations that are placed on students in order for them to succeed. In college, I was the head student researcher on a two-year lab project. I took several upper level science courses including: biochemistry, calculus, organic chemistry, calculus based physics, cell biology, anatomy, and physiology. I studied marine biology in the Virgin Islands and am CPR certified.

*** Lesson Details ***
Voice lessons with me are fun and effective. You can expect to hear improved technique from day one, eventually reaching your long term goals. I begin every lesson aligning the students voice through various vocal warm ups and exercises. We then work together to pick repertoire that will suit the singer'€™s voice and they will enjoy singing. During a lesson we will also cover performance presentation, acting, diction, rhythm, musicality, style, and interpretation.

During tutoring you can expect a personalized plan based on your goals and aspirations. Since every student is different you can be assured we will come up with a plan that is designed just for you. I am a laid back tutor but will be sure to get the most out of you after our time together. Most students see at least a one letter grade improvement. My main goal for every tutoring session is student learning and comprehension.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Piano, recording equipment, large collection of sheet music

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in helping students find their true singing voice.

Ben has great sight into the voice and from day one really helps you pin point the things you have to work on as a singer. Straight to the point and frank, he really helps you become self aware of your voice. having someone knowledgeable and critical listen to my singing has been a huge help and I've already seen a difference since the first lesson. He has a more in depth warm up/vocal exercise routine than what I'm used to, but if you stick with everything he says, you'll definitely notice improvements.

As a singer/songwriter looking to improve my vocal chops, I needed to find someone that I could jump right in with and start improving right away. Benjamin provided me with a really comfortable environment and laid back teaching approach that has given me great confidence in myself as a performer.

From the great, useful warmups to the very insightful critiques, Benjamin has taught me a lot about my own voice and what I have to work with. I've improved drastically over the last few months, and his suggestions and ideas about how to approach various singing techniques are without a doubt the reason why.

I look forward to continuing my lessons with Benjamin, and I have very high hopes in myself as an artist after learning from him a great deal about what it takes to be a good singer!

I have been working with Rafeh for 6 months and the results are far better than I could have imagined. When I started, I was a total programming novice. I began an online Coursera class in R programming and Rafeh’s help was the only way I could have completed it. He is a flexible and patient teacher. I found that he was committed to my full understanding of foundational concepts. He was not merely concerned with getting the answers right and getting through the class. Together, he guided me through several online courses using both Python and R. He has given me enough of a programming base to be accepted into a master’s program for analytics. This wouldn’t have been possible without his help.

Rafeh is a pleasure to work with. He has a friendly demeanor and is flexible with his scheduling. He is very knowledgeable in computer science, yet is able to explain to a total beginner. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend him to anyone.
