The study of stringed instruments in particular is one of tremendous depth. The violin plays a vital role in a great number of music traditions across the globe and every time we play, we connect, we celebrate, and we contribute to that vibrating strin
g community. I have been playing for 20 years and teaching private and group lessons for seven and I would love to show you or your child the wonders of playing music.
My passion for teaching is as strong as my desire for personal musical growth. I believe that a one-on-one teacher to student relationship is the best way for the student to grow not only in the subject being taught, but emotionally as well. It is my goal for every one of my students to learn some life lesson or become acquainted with a non-musical philosophy through the study of music. From my personal life-long study of music I have learned about the importance of listening, dedication, compassion, respect, and of teaching oneself, and if I am able to pass on just a fraction of this experiential knowledge, then the student has found success.
I have a style, structure, and discipline of teaching that has been passed onto me from my great teachers. There are core values that I maintain like ear training, good technique, playing etudes and scales, and reading music, but every student learns differently and develops their own way of learning and playing the instrument. I balance my curriculum with your own style and your approach to learning. We work on repertoire that you want to learn, and I will help you set your own achievable goals. If you want strictly classical lessons, we can do that. If you want to learn classical techniques and fundamentals, but play American fiddle repertoire, we can do that. I have experience playing in many, many styles such as jazz, rock, country, Americana, and various world fiddle traditions, and my experience at Berklee (the world's premier popular music school) has shown me how versatile our instrument can be. Although I am not certified, I use the Suzuki method with books and repertoire. I teach a lot of improvisation and although I emphasize learning by ear, I do place much importance on reading.
I teach from my comfortable and charming pet and smoke free home studio near Mt. Tabor.

Greg A. is a multi-instrumentalist and teacher who performs in a wide variety of styles and genres. He has used his classical violin training as a springboard for learning about improvising, jazz, world music traditions. His studies on the mandolin landed him a four-year scholarship at the Berklee College of Music in Boston where he studied Composition. He was a founding member of the ME/2 Orchestra, a nationally-recognized full orchestra based in Burlington, VT created for people with mental disabilities and those who support them. He also performed in the traditional middle eastern music ensemble Grup Anwar, and has travelled to Scotland with the Vermont theater troupe Spielpalast Cabaret. He currently lives in Portland, OR where he maintains a studio of violin, viola and mandolin students both at his home studio and with Keys to Life Music School and the Northwest Chinese Academy. He performs regularly with Three for Silver, Down Home Music, the Oregon Mandolin Orchestra, Cascade Chamber Orchestra and various local jazz, classical, and folk ensembles.

Top-Notch Fiddle Teacher
Greg is himself a top-notch musician, but, more to the point here, he's a top-notch teacher. He's easy going and positive, but he keeps you moving along and he's clear and constructive when bumps in the road occur (as they frequently do in my case). I think I have made a lot of progress in a relatively short time, especially since I'm in my 60s and haven't touched a fiddle since I was a pre-teen. I recommend Greg highly.
Hi, my name is Sue L. I perform professionally with Cascade Chamber Orchestra (classical) and Mango Nights (World Music and Jazz). I've been teaching all strings and piano for about 20 years. In the first few lessons students learn how to get get big, beautiful tone by learning various bowing techniques that are easy to learn with a little daily practice.
Then I teach how to read music and play songs in a variety of styles: Gypsy, classical, bluegrass, contemporary classical, rock and more. The album I use for this is a beginning book called VIP Strings composed by my mentor Dr. Lyons. T
he book comes with a play along piano accompaniment CD that makes practicing fun! Along with this I teach music fundamentals like scales, music theory and ear training.
For more serious students, I use materials from the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music and prepare them for one to two exams a year. The exams test playing abilities on 3 songs plus scales, arpeggios, ear training and music theory. Students that pass get a beautiful certificate for each level, grades 1 to 8.
I earned my music degree from Portland State University in 2006, graduating with honors. In 1996 I won two Medals of Distinction for violin performance and music theory and then in 2001 I received a Merit Award from the Associated Board of the Royal School of Music, London, England for viola performance. I've been blessed to be able to perform in a variety of ensembles and genres such as musical theater pit orchestras, string quartets, the Vancouver Symphony, and rock, jazz, tango, Middle Eastern and blue grass/folk bands.

I endeavor to provide a fun, non intimidating environment for students while motivating them to achieve their highest potential by providing many performance opportunities throughout the year. Some of my students have appeared as special guests with my band, Mango Nights.
Included with weekly private lessons are once a month group lessons where students can learn essential ensemble skills and have fun meeting other students.
Beginning students learn several simple songs that teach great tone and rhythm using classical, folk, blues, rock, ragtime, bluegrass. Students learn concepts such as syncopation, rhythm, note reading, articulations, dynamics, asymmetrical time meters and and more. Each book comes with a CD with piano accompaniment which makes practicing at home enjoyable.
Students are gradually introduced to scales, arpeggios, music theory, ear training and sight reading. All this works together to produce "the complete musician". For more serious students who have the goal of auditioning for university scholarships, top youth orchestras or becoming a professional musician, an accelerated intensive course is available in partnership with the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music. In this program, the student is prepared for a once a year rigorous exam requiring the playing of select pieces, scales and arpeggios, sight reading and ear training. The candidate performs for the visiting Associated Board Examiner from London England and is graded on a point system. Upon passing the student receives a beautiful certificate and additional awards for high scores. Once a year at a separate time, a written exam for music theory is taken. The exams are graded 1 to 8 and can be classical or jazz depending on the candidate's choice.

Susan is a wonderful instructor. She was flexible with my crazy schedule. She gave me enough work to not get boerd between lessons but not to much work. I always look forward to my lessons.
I started learning piano as a child, but it was in high school that I realized I really wanted to pursue playing keyboards, because it allowed me a way to express myself. I was hooked. Later on I attended Mt. Hood Community College, played keyboards and sang in choirs and vocal jazz. After graduating on the President's List with an Associates Degree in Special Studies Music, I directed the college Gospel Ensemble for two years before working full-time at a large local church, where I was a Music Director, Worship Leader, and keyboard player. In addition to vocal and keyboard work, I enjoyed di
recting large and small choirs and ensembles, band directing, orchestra conducting, and arranging many styles of music. It is exciting to experience what can happen when people work together musically--the whole becomes even greater than the sum of the parts!

In our lessons, you'll learn proper technique, sight-reading, improvising, and the music theory behind it. I utilize popular piano methods and contribute additional resources, and I design lessons to help you reach your music goals, whether your dream is to play with others, write your own music, or play your favorites for personal enjoyment. You'll explore many music genres, from classical to rock to jazz, including a large dose of your preferred styles. If you play an electronic keyboard, we'll incorporate features of your instrument to increase your rhythm and song-writing skills. Aspiring songwriters can learn skills like chart writing and computer notation. You'll learn how technology--even your smart phone--can help!
The student is responsible to purchase required books--usually lesson and theory, and occasionally a recital book. These usually cost between 5 and 7 dollars each and can be purchased locally. Bring lined paper with you for your lesson notes. I'll supply staff paper, music and any additional lesson materials, as needed. I will encourage you to purchase a metronome (the musician's friend) if you do not have an instrument with rhythms or metronome.
*** Studio Equipment *** I teach both at students' homes (on your instrument) or at my home, where I have a Yamaha CP70 electric grand piano. The lessons are in the front living room, where seating is available and parents are welcome to observe the lesson. I have a laptop with Sibelius Notation and YouTube at the ready, as well as a mic, mixer and speakers, should they be needed. There may even be a studio cat nearby to inspire you!
*** Travel Equipment *** If lessons are at your home, it is important that you have a practice instrument, which we will use in our lessons. If you need to purchase a piano or are exploring the world of electronic keyboards, I can help you with the many choices available and recommend instruments in your price range. I can also help you become familiar with your keyboard and those features that will be useful to you.
*** Specialties *** For individual lessons, I prefer using the Alfred Method (beginning through intermediate), and have also used the Bastien method, and some others. I teach both sight-reading and/or improvisational skills, along with musical theory, according to the student's needs and goals.
