Arlette C.

Reseda, CA

My style of teaching is to teach each child one step at a time, through method training. Each child/Adult has their own learning curve and I adjust accordingly. Each lesson is fun and yet a learning time. I love teaching and it feeds every day. I always can see more students.

About Arlette

Arlette C. grew up and attended schools in Culver City, California. She attended Los Angeles Valley College where she received an Associate of Arts degree in Music. She then received a partial scholarship and received the Margaret Aue Award for outstanding cellist while attending California State University at Northridge, where she received a Bachelor of Music degree in cello performance. She went on to attend University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, with a full scholarship and graduated with a Master of Music degree in cello performance.
After her graduation in 1984, she toured Europe for eigh
t months playing cello with the Schatz Theater Group, an American opera company. Upon her return from Europe, she was hired to play in various orchestras in Michigan. In 1991, she returned to California and was named Operations Manager with the Inland Empire Symphony Orchestra in San Bernardino. In 1994, she moved back to Culver City, where she began to work for Cedars Sinai Medical Center in 1997. Noticing the lack of any significant orchestra in Culver City she founded the Culver City Chamber Orchestra, with a mission of developing classical music interest in young audiences.
After she founded the Culver City Chamber Orchestra in 1997, she created the Just For Kids Youth Symphony Orchestra (2006-2008). With the Just For Kids group, she taught music fundamentals, music history, musicianship, and orchestral repertoire.
Ms. Arlette as well is the Founder and Music Director of her own orchestra and has attended several conducting workshops throughout the United States hosted by world renowned teachers such as Harold Faberman, Apo Hsu, Eduardo Navega, Marin Alsop, Lawrence Golan, Leonard Slatkin, Christoph Eschenbach, Otto Werner-Mueller, and Daniel Lewis. Her current conducting coach is Mr. John Koshak.
She has taught at Bloom School of Music In 2013. She is successfully conducting with the Culver City Chamber Orchestra, and is a free-lance cellist, and holds two wonderful cello studios in Culver City and Reseda.

*** Lesson Details ***
My lessons are fun and entertaining, but you (the student) will always learn something). You will first learn the basics like posture, sitting properly, cello basics, then we actually play the cello. Yeah!!!! You play a line or two or three, then we play together!!! We do this a couple of times with several different fingers on the strings so you can get used to it. Repeating this over and over gives you lots of confidence and mastery!!!
At the 6 month mark I hold a recital for all my students who must participate so that I and your parents can see the progress you have made in these 6 months. And both you and I should be very proud of the work You have put into playing the cello!!!

*** Specialties ***
Methods I teach are traditional scales, etudes, broken thirds and easy pieces to difficult ones. Styles I keep range from the entire classical era from Bach to 21st century music to Broadway and some jazz.

Fabulous cello teacher!!! We are so pleased that our daughter is taking lessons from Arlette. When our daughter wanted to learn cello (2 years ago), Arlette came highly recommended. We were not disappointed! Arlette teaches all aspects of playing the cello, including music theory, and developing musically. She's passionate, caring, patient every step of the way, inspirational, and makes it so much fun!--consequently, my girl recently auditioned and was accepted to play in a high school orchestra (she's a middle school student). She loves playing cello!

Angela C.

Long Beach, CA

Experienced cello teacher of 30 years available for eager students of all experience levels and ages. I structure my lessons so students learn what they want to learn, while also building a strong foundation of classical skills. I welcome adult beginners and provide many playing opportunities throughout the year for my students.

About Angela

EDUCATION

My musical education began while sitting on my mother's lap as she taught piano lessons. I began studying cello with a member of the Kansas City Philharmonic at age 9, and at age ten, I followed in my mother's footsteps to play the flute. I played all three instruments, (piano, cello and flute) until high school when it was became clear to me that I wanted to be an orchestra teacher. With this dream in mind, I began playing the violin as well.
I graduated from Drake University with a Bachelor's in Music Education in 1989 and again in 1999 with a Master's degree.

PERFORMANCE
EXPERIENCE

As a youngster, I was the youngest member of the Kansas City Youth Symphony and the Kansas City Cello Choir performing with these two groups for eight years. I was chosen from applicants nation wide, to perform in Carnegie Hall and travel Europe with "America's Youth in Concert" and I was a three time All-Stater.

While attending Drake University, I played in the Drake University Orchestra and the Des Moines Symphony, and I was the winner of the Young Artist Competition awarding me the honor as featured soloist with the Drake Symphony Orchestra.
In 1993 I began playing with the Encore String Trio. This trio plays on a regular basis for weddings and receptions.
I currently play cello in the Encore String Trio, and viola in the Long Beach Community Orchestra.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

My teaching experience includes nearly 30 years of private teaching. I've had the pleasure of teaching all areas of music; elementary general music, band, choir and orchestra. During my 20 years of teaching orchestra in the public schools, I implemented many innovative opportunities for my students such as children's concert which drew more than 700 people in attendance, strolling strings, cello choir and a viola choir, all of which proved to be very motivational for the students. My goal of teaching is to make music fun for all.

PHILOSOPHY

I believe music should be fun. I provide you with several playing opportunities throughout the year, ranging from solo to group playing. I provide large group playing opportunities at Christmas and at the recitals. Every group playing opportunity is accompanied with food and games for all. This studio is FUN!

*** Lesson Details ***
Whether you are studying for recitals, competitions, a music career or just for fun, you can expect equal attention to technique and musicianship in your lessons.
Lessons will be tailored to each students needs which may include flash cards, supplemental materials, ear training, sight reading, technical studies, scales, and solo work.
You are never to old to learn to play an instrument. Over half of my students are adult beginners. Because of this, I provide group playing opportunities and I organize a solo ensemble contest for my students. This gives opportunities to the adult beginners that they missed out on as a child. You will have a lesson by yourself, monthly mini recitals in my studio, and you will have the opportunity to play orchestra music as a group all right here in my studio. You are guaranteed to learn how to play your instrument, have fun and gain great friendships here in this studio. I'm looking forward to introducing you to our studio family.

*** Studio Equipment ***
The teachers studio is in a large room with multiple windows for natural light. The room includes instruments and stands in the middle of the room.

*** Specialties ***
I use the Suzuki method books. I am a classical player and I teach classical music.

She is able to teach many genres of music to all levels of musicianship, whether beginner or advanced, whether they want to learn Mozart or Coldplay, Aretha Franklin or Joni Mitchell . Her style of teaching utilizes the classical approach of theory and sight reading, but MOST IMPORTANTLY allows the student to explore the instrument freely while also achieving good musicianship. Having fun while honing the craft is the way to an enduring love of playing and is a principle she always uses in her lessons.

C
armen has a special gift with very young children; she is able to keep children interested, engaged, inspired and challenged. She has a patience with children that is extraordinary because she believes strongly in the ability of music to enrich children's lives in all areas and seeks to cultivate that within the child.

Education

Carmen comes from a long family lineage of musicians and artists. Always being exposed to classical music and opera since birth, Carmen was in awe of the power of the human voice through opera. At 8 she began to study the art form and teach herself music. She started studying with teachers at age 11. After learning voice, piano and cello followed. While studying classical techniques, she also taught herself other genres of music which enabled her to play, record and perform with musicians of almost every genre by 19.

Carmen has been taught and trained by many professional working musicians of impressive musical carrer heights Her former opera/ vocal coach Shonie Lebie attended The Julliard School on a full scholarship before going on to The Metropolitan Opera House. Piano teacher Shoshana Ben Horin, a graduate of Prague Conservatory of Music and concert pianist, toured all of Europe before instructing Carmen in piano. Carmen has learned cello and other string instruments from professional working musicians here in Los Angeles.

Ryan was great!! He took the time to find out what my level of knowledge was and we took off from there. I like the fact that he has his cello and plays along to help guide the student. I'm looking forward to my next lesson and all the practice time!!

I'm very glad I found Ryan. I was a bit hesitant to take cello lessons because I'm a male in my mid 20s, I've never played, and I was intimidated by the whole idea. Ryan makes it fun and stress-free, he's very patient, and most importantly - he cares! I know he cares about my progress because he proactively met with me on a non-lesson day so that I could tape up my cello and repair the broken string in order to have enough time to practice. I'm very comfortable with Ryan as my instructor and I look forward to my continued progress through his excellent guidance.

Finding an individual with the credentials or capacity to develop your technique isn't really the difficult part in searching for a teacher. As a twenty-something in the early stages of developing my career, I place a much higher value in being inspired.

Despite having no prior experience with the cello and having little time to practice in between lessons, Ryan does a great job in simplifying the musical concepts and subtly drilling in the key points-- so much so that I can actually hear the improvement with every session. Not only is he very patient and attentive, Ryan also shows an obvious enthusiasm towards his craft that is highly infectious.

The lessons themselves are thorough, but still engaging. Given my hectic lifestyle, I was initially uncertain about committing to a new skill and figured my interest in the cello would waver. I'm still no cello aficionado--however, this first set of lessons has surprisingly heightened that initial interest and convinced me to keep at it.

Bottom Line: If you're looking for a teacher or considering the instrument, I would definitely recommend giving Ryan a shot!
