About Shealeen
Some of my earliest recollections involve me tinkering on an old upright piano at my grandparent's house in Albuquerque, NM. My parents signed me up for piano lessons in 1997. After a few years of basic training, I began to study classically under Juilliard graduate, Tonja Voorhees until 2008, when she retired. Throughout the years I have continued my training, studying under different jazz, blues, and theory teachers. I have completed several Berklee College of Music courses online through Coursera.

After graduating from high school, I began giving private lessons to students ranging from about 5 - 16 years old. When I moved from Albuquerque in 2013, I was teaching about 25 students at a Children's Music School. Since moving to Nashville, I have continued my career as a full time music teacher, teaching both from a music Academy in Fr
anklin, as well as teaching lessons in people's homes.

Coming from a musical family, my siblings and I played together often growing up, and frequently led worship at our family's church. We began recording songs we had written together, and in 2008 began to tour after getting signed to a record label based in Seattle. Since then, I have had the opportunity to tour the country, and was even asked to play at a festival in Germany called "Rock without Limits." We've played with artists such as Switchfoot, NEEDTOBREATHE, and For King & Country. Since 2008, my siblings and I have released 4 albums, and make our living as full time musicians.

*** Lesson Details ***
Students of mine should always expect a fun, creative, and full lesson that is specifically tailored to fit the students needs and learning style. I work great with kids, and I have plenty of experience with students even as young as 5 or 6 years old!

I am patient and kind, but I insist that my students work hard and stay positive. I begin lessons by asking if the student practiced, and then ask how their practice went. I always make sure that the curriculum is understood before moving ahead, and I will work hard to form good habits such as proper technique, counting aloud, and sight reading.

More than anything though, I desire to inspire a LOVE for music and piano in my students. I want them to enjoy their lessons and enjoy learning music. I'm so grateful for the teachers who helped me grow into the musician I am today, and I'm incredibly passionate about passing on my knowledge and passion for music to the next generation of artists and world changers.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Upright Mason & Hamlin Piano in my home. Seating for parents in living room.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I don't bring equipment with me beyond writing material & stickers. Student should have a piano or full size keyboard as well as their music books.

*** Specialties ***
Sight reading, classical technique, theory, chords, ear training.

About Julie
I am passionate about Music and Music Education. It's rewarding for me to watch my students develop in their musical skill and enjoy making music more and more. My students range from the very young (5 years old) to school age children, to teens, and adults. My students benefit from my expertise in teaching Vocal and Piano music, my knowledge of Music Theory, and my encouraging teaching style. I have been involved in making music since I was a young child, and I have been teaching private students since I was a Music major at the University of Florida in 1982 when a fellow college student asked me to teach her voice lessons. I have a Music Education degree from the University of Florida; my major instrument was Voice, my minor was Piano. I taught as a public school music educator in Florida, California, and Tennessee between the years
of 1983 to 1997. I taught private students after school in my classroom while I was a public school teacher, and from my home since 1997. My post-graduate continuing professional education includes Tennessee Arts Academy at Belmont University, Kodaly Pedagogy and Solfege Level 1 (vocal teaching techniques, do-re-mi, ear training), Orff-Schulwerk Music for Children Level 1 certification, Yamaha M.I.E. (Music In Education) Piano Lab certification. My professionalism and expertise are at your service. I will work together with you to insure an enjoyable and informative learning experience.

*** Lesson Details ***
A typical lesson in my studio would begin with a brief question/answer time with the student to learn how their week has gone, and how their music practice is progressing.

For PIANO LESSONS we begin with Technique including scales and dexterity exercises, then we play from the Lesson book and a Recital selection. I typically let the student play through the pieces they have prepared without interruption, then I call attention to corrections that need to be made, I demonstrate the correction, and then ask the student to play the piece again. After that we go over the Theory assignments, and do Ear Training exercises. I am comfortable teaching from a variety of different methods courses. The methods course is chosen according to the student's interest. I never require a piano student to continue using books that are not inspiring. There so many methods courses available, that a student may always be able to have methods books they LOVE.

In my SINGING LESSONS we also begin with a recap of the student's week. Then we continue with Warm Up exercises to prepare the student's voice for the lesson. Then we study Sight Singing and Solfege Singing (do-re-mi-fa-sol-la-ti-do) to increase the student's listening skills. After that the student sings their selections. Like I do in Piano lessons, I listen to the pieces they have prepared without interruption, then I call attention to corrections that need to be made, I demonstrate the correction, and then ask the student to sing the piece again. I am comfortable teaching many styles of vocal music including classical, Broadway, pop, rock, and Christian.

For MUSIC THEORY lessons, the study material is chosen according to the student's interest and age. Topics include notation, chord structure, chord progression, melodic structure, and harmony. I also incorporate Music Listening in the Music Theory lesson in order to learn from the masters in many styles of music. My Music Theory students will also have the opportunity to develop composition and songwriting skills if they desire.

My teaching style is structured and friendly, keeping the student's goals and interests at the forefront. I enjoy motivating students to reach their highest potential.
After 3 to 6 months in my studio my students will see improvement in their musical technique, ear training, music reading, notation, and knowledge. They will be preparing recital pieces for an upcoming performance. I provide two recital opportunities a year: in December, and in May. Most importantly, the student's love and appreciation of music will be growing.

*** Studio Equipment ***
PIANO lessons in Living Room: piano near front entryway, couch, loveseat, over-sized chair, dining room table, open space, end table with chair, parents may sit in on lesson.

SINGING lessons in Recording Studio: keyboard, recording equipment, desk, 2 chairs, music stand, microphone, private room. Parents may wait in adjacent rec room or sit in on lesson.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I provide lesson books, the students should provide their instrument.

I do have a mobile keyboard to bring for SINGING lessons.

*** Specialties ***
Kodaly Pedagogy and Solfege Level 1

Orff-Schulwerk Music for Children Level 1 certification

Yamaha M.I.E. (Music In Education) Lab certified instructor

Caleb has taught me so much in only five lessons! I now can play 4 songs that I love, and I'm getting a great refresher course on music theory. He's super patient and sets very realistic expectations. I really like that he cared to ask me what songs I liked and would like to learn instead of starting with generic songs like 'twinkle twinkle' because it gave me more motivation to practice and learn. I can't wait to learn more!

About Anna
My name is Anna Arata and I would love to be your new voice teacher! I am a professional singer, songwriter, and recording artist here in Nashville.

I started studying the voice when I was 11 years old. This included taking private voice lessons (classical primarily) and participating in several musical theater shows, a middle school jazz choir, and was a member of the Boston Children’s Choir. Through high school and part of college, I participated in musicals, co-lead a girl’s a capella group, performed in a show choirs, and was selected for the All States choir in Massachusetts in 2010. On college breaks, I also volunteered as a teaching assistant (TA) for my former middle school jazz choir. In May 2015, I graduated from Belmont University with a Bachelor of Music, specifically in Commercial Voice. Through my music studies, I have
taken several music theory classes, which have contributed to my ability to analyze music in a technical way. Until now, I have accumulated over 10 years of voice lessons for myself, ranging from classical/opera studies to commercial styles.

Since moving to Nashville in 2012, I have worked tirelessly to confidently hold the title of a “working musician.” While in college, I started and managed my own swing band, specializing in 30’s-40’s jazz. In our time, we were a part of several radio shows (including Music City Roots), opened for large acts, recorded EP’s and records, and organized tours in the greater Midwest area. Post college and disbanding, I have had many performance-based professional singing opportunities. For the past two years, I have served as the lead singer for the Grand Hotel Orchestra on Mackinac Island, MI. There, I was contracted for two 2.5 month stays during which I performed a variety of jazz and pop classics 7 nights a week. In Nashville, I have successfully gathered my own jazz band. I am a regular performer at Rudy’s Jazz Room in the heart of Nashville. I am capable of leading my own groups and all of the organizing that entails – creating charts/books, calling players, leading rehearsals. Additionally, I am in my first semester of volunteering for W.O. Smith School as a music theory instructor.
