About Jonathan
About

I am a Florida native, active doctoral student, teacher and practitioner. My career includes performing and recording as a guitarist and teaching subjects such as music or math. Grade-school academic strengths in mathematics represent my enthusiasm for the subject. The math equivalent in music can be considered music theory, which is another passion of mine. I hope to take these well-rounded characteristics to teach and influence others with what I have learned in my education and career thus far.

Education & Teaching Experience:

I am currently pursuing my Doctorate of Musical Arts from Shenandoah University and hold a Masters of Music from the University of Akron and a Bachelor of Music from Stetson University (all degrees with a guitar performance emphasis). I also have a temporary teaching certificate for Music K-12 fro
m the Florida Department of Education. I have taught in Florida as a preferred substitute for general music classes, K-12. In college, I have given study sessions for music theory levels ranging from 4-part writing to post-serialism.

Degrees:
Doctorate of Musical Arts: Guitar Performance; Shenandoah University, expected May 2017/2018
Master of Music: Guitar Performance; University of Akron, May 2014
Bachelor of Music: Guitar Performance; Stetson University, 2011

While giving lessons:
I ensure that every student receives fundamental foundation pertaining to the subject. While learning the basics, I advise that the student organizes their lessons and materials in a way that displays progress over time. With the proper knowledge, we can treat the heart of a subject with refinement in order to grasp it's purpose and reason---whether its music or math.

Why?
My students have grown with confidence through a sense of accomplishment. Success does not only affect a person's well-being but can also impact other dimensions of their lives.

I teach guitar, drums and vocals to an array of students ranging from 10 to 60. Not only do I teach but I also write songs for certain students who have a desire to perform their own music as well as learning and honing their craft on their instrument. I am currently helping a vocal student of mine write some songs after scales and warm-ups and am working with one of my top guitar students tomorrow on different scale techniques. I just placed a drum student in the finals in Alternative Press Magazine's Hit Like A Girl competition. She was the top vote getter with 1,026 votes and is in the top 10 under 18 drummers in the world. I am also working with more and more students on songwriting and showing them different chords and ways to go about writing a song. I would love to get started with you as soon as possible and we will get you where
you want to be musically. I find that if a student has a particular song or a rhythm pattern they want to learn they learn more quickly. They're learning and having fun at the same time. We will find what you want to learn and we will get it down! Furthermore, it's your choice if you would rather come to my place as a lot of my students do or have me come to your place as a lot of them do. I look forward to speaking with you! Cheers!

*** Lesson Details ***
I will get you started depending on your skill level. I usually, of course, see where we're at there and then decide what needs to be taught. With each respective student I usually make them a CDR the lessons for you so you can take them home and improve on what we've worked on.

*** Studio Equipment ***
recording equipment; guitars (acoustic & electric); bass guitar (electric); upright bass; maracas; egg shaker; cowbell; tambourine; PSR 170 64-key digital keyboard for the voice lessons.Yamaha DT Explorer for drum lessons

About Leon
I started playing the trumpet 29 years ago in my elementary school's concert band in New Orleans. Since 1993 I've been performing professionally around the world as a Jazz musician. The world has given me the opportunity to learn from world class musicians from the streets of New Orleans and Jackson Square to the classrooms of institutionalized learning. I studied for 2 years at the University of New Orleans, under the great jazz pianist, Ellis Marsalis, after which I continued my professional career joining the oldest, still performing Jazz band in the world, The Original Tuxedo Jazz Band led by one of my mentors Bob French. Simultaneously, I was asked to create and lead a horn section for the Latin Billboard Award winning/Grammy Nominated band Los Hombres Calientes . Also, from that time to present I perform around the world extensivel
y as a featured trumpeter/vocalist performing New Orleans' Traditional Jazz Music. I began teaching professionally around 2011 when I joined the faculty at the Don Jamison Heritage School of Music in New Orleans as the brass instructor where I also teach theory and Jazz. I've done clinics (internationally) and taught students of all ages. I really believe that when you have a desire to do something (like learn to play trumpet), your desire is a signal that you have the potential to be great at it! I can't wait to help you be great!

So before I started lessons with Leon, I was relatively new( self taught) a learning the trumpet and I was nervous about taking lessons. Mostly nervous because I didn't know what the instructor was going to have me change, and was nervous that the instructor wouldn't be understanding of my faults.

Leon Brown during the first lesson showed me that although he was my teacher, he was also there to help me progress and get better as a player and person. Every lesson after that my nervousness became less and less and my confidence has grown within 5 lessons.

I recommend Maestro Brown as a Trumpet teacher because he takes his time, makes sure you grasp the lesson, provides a comfortable atmosphere, and with hard work and dedication outside of the lesson, he will notice the work you put in.

Take the chance, don't be scared to get started on your musical journey like I was and take a chance with Mr. Leon Brown. For me at least, I have not regretted my decision and will continue lessons with him for as long as I can!

Cheers to all!

Leon is the total package. He is a professional musician ( has his own Jazz quartet, checkout You Tube), a highly recognized musical instructor in the great city of New Orleans and very patient with his students individual abilities. He can make you into whatever level of trumpeter you aspire to if you do
your part as a student. You will be fortunate and blessed to have him as a teacher.None better.
