As an educator, my philosophy is to teach my students how to become the best versions of themselves by creating a safe, healthy learning environment. My mission is to cultivate musicians to be the best they can be by receiving a well-rounded music education, developing mastery, and becoming life-long music appreciators. My goal as an educator is to inspire and encourage students to test their limits and strive for musical, personal, and professional growth.

Benefits of being in my cello studio:

Flexible schedule: Unlike other cello teachers, I have a lot of availability throughout the day and week. As long as you reschedule within 24 hours, and I can guarantee you have a lesson during that week!

Access to resources for free: Students in my studio will receive special access to my cello studio google drive folder on my website. You will find helpful resources such as music, video tutorials, recordings, and so much more that are only available for students in my studio.

They way she teaches the lessons makes it educational and yet fun at the same time. She's easy to get a long with and communicates well. Loved that she complimented me when I was doing something right. She made me feel very comfortable. Overall she was a great teacher.
Sarah
We met Ashley when she was a junior in college through the Univ. of Texas String Project. Over the two years with her in this program, Ashley has been most dedicated and caring, and her passion for teaching showed when she went above and beyond to address my questions. She is also organized, reliable, and resourceful. During the program breaks and then post graduation, we continued with private lessons because Ashley made lessons fun so my little cellist loves hanging out with Ashley that much! Transitioning to online lessons was a trial for everyone, but Ashley managed to make that work and her dedication did not falter. We are so thankful for her and highly recommend her to anyone looking to learn/improve in cello.

I'm a passionate and motivated instructor who loves working with students and sharing my love of music. I graduated from Yale school of Music with master degree of cello performance in 2021. I have performed in renowned venues such as Carnegie Hall, John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Vienna Konzerthaus, Suntory Hall in Japan, and the National Concert Hall in Taiwan, I also worked with prestigious conductors including Carolyn Kuan from Hartford Symphony Orchestra, Valery Gergiev, Jean-Marie Zeitouni, Takacs Nagy from Verbier music festival, Peter Oundjian from Toronto Symphony, David Robertson, Ignat Solzhenitsyn, Marin Alsop.

My teaching experience dates back to my college days, as I began teaching private lessons part time 6 years ago, and have been consistently teaching students since then. Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points I like to emphasize for younger students, as it tends to help the student progress and gain a passion ...

Cello:
A bowed or plucked string instrument with four strings tuned in perfect fifths. The strings from low to high are generally tuned to C2, G2, D3 and A3, an octave lower than the viola. It is a member of the violin family of musical instruments, which also includes the violin and viola and the double bass. The cello is used as a solo musical instrument, as well as in chamber music ensembles (e.g., string quartet), string orchestras, as a member of the string section of symphony orchestras, and some types of rock bands. It is the second-largest and second lowest (in pitch) bowed string instrument in the modern symphony orchestra, the double bass being the largest and having the lowest (deepest) pitch. My lessons always start out with the basics! We start out by learning notes by plucking the strings and then the bow is soon incorporated. The goal is to eventually learn all the notes on the fretboard and also learning how to read and play chords. As the student progresses ...

Ms. Karen did a pretty good job, she had ideas for the lesson and provided ideas for the next lesson. She went out of her way to help me with this new idea---------"music" and "reading music." If there was any short fall in the lesson it was on my side and my preparation failings. I have no problem recommending Ms. Karen to others. Regards, JC

Extremely knowledgeable! Karen is a superb guitar instructor. Honestly, I was struggling. Discouraged! She helped me understand my strengths and weaknesses, and moved me from beginner to intermediate in a matter of months. If you’re getting tired of learning from YouTube and smart phone apps, let Karen kick start your guitar playing. You’ll be glad you did. Thanks Karen!!

What is the Suzuki Cello Method?

The Suzuki method, founded in 1945 by violinist Shinichi Suzuki as the Talent Education Movement, is one of the most enduring teaching methods, or pedagogies for young string players. Suzuki’s main goal for his music education system was to give students a “noble spirit,” which would instill respect and cooperation through his method. The method was brought to America in the 1960s by John D. Kendall, and today the Suzuki Association of the Americas instructs new teachers and studen …

What Are the Names of the Cello's Parts? A Closer Look

The string family has a unique history, and a very unique look. Modern instruments have elaborate carvings adorning on the top, inlaid purfling supporting the cello’s rich sound, and beautifully stained wooden bodies. There are also internal posts and sound bars which allow the body to function as an acoustic amplifier across the cello’s wide range. If you want to know the cello parts names and how the instrument works, read on before your next cello lesson to get ready! Head and Neck Like …

What are the Hardest Cello Pieces? How to Get from Beginner to Advanced Player

As a beginner I often told myself I would know I am a really great cellist when I could play Rimsky-Korsakov’s Flight of the Bumblebee at full speed. To my young ears, this simply had to be one of the hardest cello pieces with its high range, chromaticism, and famously fast tempo. As my musical career continued I worked on these and other skills to reach a point I could begin learning the piece confidently, and it was only a matter of time before I achieved my goal. Of course, this wasn’ …
