John O.

Orlando, FL

About John

I started playing the drums at the age of ten and have been playing for thirty-four years. I played snare drum and bass drum in symphonic band in junior high and high school. I played in the Drum and Bugle Corps while in the Air Force. We marched in parades and won several awards for excellence. I have played in three Christian bands and one rock band. I have also played drum kit and percussion in church for several years. I completed the Drum Set Fundamentals course with Berklee College of Music in 2012. I am currently playing for a Christian rock band and we play live at different venues in
Central Florida. I am currently enrolled at Valencia Community College working towards my music performance degree.

This real world experience of playing with live musicians in different settings allows me to show students how to sound great and play skillfully when playing the drum kit.Whether you have dreams of playing in a touring rock band, playing in church, or just jam out with your favorite songs, I can help you reach your drumming goals.

*** Lesson Details ***
I am very passionate about teaching others how to play the drums. This is why my drum studio is called "Groove With Passion." I take teaching very seriously and I enjoy watching the transition of a beginner go from not knowing how to hold the drumsticks to playing along to music. I am very patient and am able to show students several different approaches to play grooves and fills. I am a very positive person and will get just as excited as my student when they learn what I am teaching them. I work with my students until they "get it." And that is a wonderful feeling. A good teacher inspires their students to learn and grow. That is exactly what I strive to do.

My teaching involves using several different resources that will allow the student to become a well rounded drummer. This involves learning how to read music, playing rudiments, coordination between the hands and feet, proper drumset setup and tuning, and learning to play along to music. All of this while learning proper technique. Some of the different books that might be used include: Drumsense Vol. 1 and 2, Stick Control by George Stone, The Rock Drumming System, and others. Along with these I also utilize DVD's by Jo Jo Mayer, Steve Smith, and Tommy Igoe, and other top drummers.

I am a Drumeo Instructor. Drumeo has a fantastic program for students with many different lessons for learning all aspects of drumming. I am able to connect students with these great resources.

I use the Drumsense teaching method. Drumsense is a structured learning program that teaches students how to start playing basic beats and then continue adding more coordination to advance these beats.

I am also a Hudson TIP (Teachers Integration Program) instructor. Hudson Music produces several teaching DVDs by some of the top drummers in the world. Utilizing this media allows for us to branch out and continue learning and growing as a drummer.

Learning to play an instrument should be fun and at the same time requires practice by the student. Within just a few lessons one should see some progress and as you continue to learn more advanced beats and fills, playing becomes even more fun.

Playing the drums is something that one can do for a lifetime. Whether your are eight or eighty, jamming out on a drumset is healthy, it is a great way to relieve stress, and will do wonders for your self-esteem.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I bring drumsticks, a practice pad, a metronome, and applicable teaching materials to each lesson. The student should have a functional drumkit or snare drum, depending on what instrument they are learning. They should also have their own practice pad, drumsticks, and a music stand. It is recommended for students to purchase a metronome or at least have a computer or cell phone with headphones to utilize an online metronome. Various books and other materials will need to be purchased as the student progresses with the curriculum and their playing skills advance.

*** Specialties ***
I teach rock, funk, country, basic jazz, and Christian music.

John has been teaching my 12 year old son Cole who is completely new and just starting out playing drums. John took the time to set up Cole's kit and adjust it for him. He has focuses on music that Cole likes and has been extremely patient in teaching him and making the lessons fun. I would highly recommend John as a teach - especially for children.

Melody C.

Orlando, FL

About Melody

Hello. My name is Melody and I am a Sophomore at Valencia College majoring in Piano Performance. I learned to play the piano as a child, and recently decided to pursue a career in music. I have already completed my general education courses of Mathematics and Freshman Composition and have a GPA of 4.0 in all my classes.

As for my teaching experience, I was home schooled, so I taught some of my younger siblings reading, mathematics, and beginning piano. I tutored children ages 5- 13 in reading and math.

I spent four years in Russia and helped some of my friends who were learning English
as a foreign language.

While in Russia I studied the Russian language at the university for a year, and am proficient enough to teach beginning Russian.

I worked at a daycare for a few years, so I have experience working with children ages 2- 10.

On my profile I stated that I can teach students with special needs. I want to clarify that I do not have training or experience in this area, but I would be happy to try teaching children with special needs. It would be important to me to meet with the parents before the first class to discuss the special need and what I would need to know to be able to teach their child well.

William O.

Orlando, FL

About William

Hi! My name is William, and I am a computer science major at Valencia College with an extremely diverse skillset. I focus on teaching underlying concepts in order to promote deep understanding, rather than memorization. I strive not only to provide help with an immediate problem but also to help gain more general skills that can be applied in many contexts. I love to tutor and teach people, and I really love helping people get better at learning.

I have been tutoring a wide variety of subjects for about 4 years, and I have lots of experience helping people tackle difficult concepts, and, pe
rhaps more importantly, helping people find joy in subjects that they previously disliked.

I can't wait to start learning with you!

William is nothing short of the only tangible reason I am able to program competently. I certainly wouldn't call myself the easiest of students, yet Will was able to drag me smoothly through my introductory programming course. He is an excellent tutor; not only for his in depth and widely encompassing field of knowledge, but also for his willingness to go over material over and over again, in as many different ways as possible, until you've truly learned. I would recommend him to my friends, neighbors and even professional programmers just to make sure they know what they're doing.

I went into my Intro to C class at UCF with very little enthusiasm towards learning the subject as well as horrible studying habits and a tendency to extreme procrastination. Before Will started tutoring me I had no hope, or care for that matter, to pass my class, but Will was actually able to get me enthusiastic about the material. Will is extremely knowledgeable on a great deal of subjects and is able to convey complex materials in an almost story like context making difficult subjects both interesting and very comprehensive. Certainly the best tutor I have ever had, would recommend to all who have difficulty in both programming and mathematics fields, with him you will want to learn.

I've had Coltan Carr as my daughter's guitar teacher for about a year now and I would definitely recommend him to friends and family. He is a very patient teacher, teaches you what you want/need to learn, and comes up with new and exciting ways to keep her excited about learning the guitar - even when she gets frustrated when she is learning a more challenging piece.
