Derrick C.

Dedham, MA

The are four basic levels to which I try to develop students' ability. In the beginning, I focus on getting students comfortable with the instrument, showing them some songs they'll have fun with, and developing the dexterity in their hands. You'll get a huge amount of help from in learning songs as I'll give you sheet music, play along with you, and basically talk you through being able to play the song.

Once you're comfortable learning songs with that amount of help, I'll start giving you sheet music and having you take it home and practice, and then go over questions or problems you may have the next week.

When you're able to teach yourself songs from sheet music, then I'll start giving you some easy songs to try to learn by ear. I'll give you some hints in the beginning about what chords are used, or what key the song is in, but eventually I'll take the training wheels off and throw you in the pool, so to speak, and make you learn the songs by ear, and then tell you if you ...

About Derrick

I've been playing the guitar for twenty-six years now, and I've been working as a guitar teacher for the last twenty years. I've been making a living as a guitar teacher in the Boston area for fourteen years now, and I teach in two locations - Brighton and Dedham. Prior to that I also taught at Guitar Attention Center in Springfield, Ohio while I was in college, where I graduated with honors at Wright State University with a Bachelor's Degree in Mass Communications.
I've also played in a variety of original and cover bands, and have written a number of songs of my own. I'm working on record
ing these as instrumentals in my home studio.
I also play in a rock cover band called Element 78. We play out every weekend, and even on some Sundays. The singer and I have also started doing some acoustic shows on Sundays and Thursdays as well.

*** Lesson Details ***
I teach in two locations - I have a private studio in Brighton and I also teach out of my home in Dedham.

I'm happy to teach students songs they want to learn, but if you're looking for a teacher with a specific plan to teach you how to play the guitar, I do have that. There are specific exercises I'll teach you and songs by popular artists that I teach students to develop their skills. I have a method for teaching guitar that I've been using since 1997, and it definitely works as I've taught a lot of people to play over the years. All you have to do is practice what I give you for 30 minutes a day, 4-5 days a week, and be patient with yourself.

Derrick was fantastic. His passion for music, and specifically for the guitar was evident. He was both personable and professional. I had no former musical education or training, so I appreciated his patience and his easy direction. I would recommend Derrick to any level student, at any age.

Christopher S.

Boston, MA

The guitar is a fantastic and extremely popular instrument. Many people can pick up a guitar and play a few chords, or sing one song. I strong urge guitarist who come to me to be interested in learning the musician aspects of the guitar as well. Most people who learn to play an instrument have to learn theory, scales, and harmony as well. On the guitar you do not have to learn these things to be able to "play" the instrument but I urge people to because that will show in the music you make.

About Christopher

Hello! My name is Christopher S. and I am a classical guitarist, composer, linguist, and experienced language and music teacher. I began learning music when I was nine on the piano however by the time I turned twelve I discovered my passion for the guitar. I began by learning songs and playing in a band with some of my school friends. This was the start of my amazing journey into music. I started with blues, rock, and pop music but I quickly moved into more complex genres such as funk and Jazz music.

In college I began my studies of the historically endless and huge world of classical music
. This is also when I began teaching. I studied classical music and completed my degree at Humboldt State University in Northern California. After earning my degree I began working as a music and guitar teacher. I taught classical guitar at a summer camp called Long Lake Camp for the Arts and later I moved back to my home in Vermont.

I was hired as the music instructor at a private music school called the Upper Valley Rock School. There I gave group lessons and private classes in guitar, bass, drums, piano and recording equipment. I have had experience teaching to kids of all ages and to adults.

After working and saving up some money I realized that in order to better my skills and become the guitar teacher I wanted to be I had to travel abroad. I moved to Seville, Spain where for two years I studied the art of classical and flamenco guitar.

I studied with a world renowned professor named Francisco Bernier at the Conservatory in Seville for two years and gave private guitar lessons part time. During this time I was also teaching English as a second language to high school and middle school students.

Recently, I have been accepted into a Masters of Music program at the New England Conservatory and I am moving back to the US after three fantastic and culture enhancing years in Europe. I will be studying with the worldly recognized guitarist, Eliot Fisk. While in Boston, I will be accepting and taking on new students who are passionate and eager to learn classical and fingerpicking guitar. If you are interested please contact me and we can begin learning the art of making beautiful music or learning the beautiful languages of the world!

Stan M.

Coventry, RI

As my guitar student, you will learn any and all facets of guitar playing that interest you: chord strumming, note reading, blues jamming, singing while playing, learning the real guitar parts to your favorite recordings, ... the choice is yours. I hold a B.M. degree from Berklee College of Music and I have been teaching guitar and performing throughout southern New England for more than three decades. I look forward to helping you achieve your musical goals and dreams on the guitar!

About Stan

Hi! I am a private music instructor with a B.M. degree from Berklee College of Music and over 33 years' full-time experience in the field. I also have decades of experience as a professional jazz, rock, and theater musician. My teaching style is laid-back and gentle. My focus is on enrichment and encouragement. I don't work with one-size-fits-all methods. Each lesson is customized to make the most of each student's own unique abilities and interests. I am very experienced in working with students of all ages, including very young children (ages 4 and up). I teach real music -- students begin p
laying music they love almost from day-one. For example, many of my piano and guitar students pride themselves on learning to play the every song on Beatles One ... playing right along with the CD! Reading, playing by ear, improvisation, singing while you play ... there are so many ways to play and avenues to explore in music. Do you have a song or two in your heart. Contact me today!

Learn Guitar Now: How to Read Tabs

Although learning to read sheet music is a valuable skill for any musician, most guitarists prefer to use a different type of notation known as guitar tablature or guitar tabs. Guitar tabs give a basic visual representation of the neck of your guitar and use numbers to indicate which notes are to be played. The First Thing Beginners Should Learn on the Guitar
Whether you've just started guitar lessons or you're teaching yourself, the best way to learn guitar is by starting with this one, basic thing. Guitar teacher Jerry W. explains... The first thing a beginner needs to learn on the guitar is how to tune. An out-of-tune guitar will make even the best player sound bad. The best way to learn guitar is to first learn how to tune it. Then, everything you play will sound better, and the whole musical world will thank you! I recommend you tun
Are You Really Ready to Play Guitar Solos?
Think you're ready to learn to shred? Guitar teacher Samuel B. shares how he decides when the time is right for his students to learn to play guitar solos... There are several factors relevant to whether or not you're ready to play guitar solos and soloing techniques. As a guitar teacher, I make the call for my students based on a combination of the following things: 1) your aptitude at playing chord changes 2) your understanding of tonal and infrastructural similarities between enharmoni
2 Simple Tricks to Play Country Guitar
When you're taking guitar lessons, you may find it challenging to play different styles of music. Here, guitar teacher Samuel B. shares his tips to help you learn country guitar... Compared to other music styles like jazz and bluegrass, country is a structurally simple genre. It usually shares the same three-chord structure as blues, soul, and rock 'n' roll.  When playing country music, you will use playful, open-handed picking to play chords, versus the flat-picking of individual notes o
Learning Guitar: Understanding Minor and 7th Chords
What are minor and 7th chords anyway? TakeLessons teacher Brian T. breaks down the music theory behind building these chords... Learning guitar chords is one of the early challenges of learning the guitar. Very often a new student will find themselves presented with a host of fingering patterns that make little sense. "Why this set of frets and not that one?" the student wonders "Why, when I move my E major down a string does it become A minor?" With just a bit of music theory and a willi
