Learn how to sing correctly and expand your range. Discover the proper warm-ups to sing your best! (For ages 10 and up only).

About Joe

I am currently the piano and guitar teacher at Oakwood Academy in Long Beach, and the music director for the Youth Cultural Arts Foundation in Bellflower. I have a BA in Music Education with an emphasis in voice. I've been teaching for 16 years in classroom and one-on-one settings. Other schools where I have taught are: Calvary Chapel Downey Schools, Dexter Music Academy, and ABC Unified School District. I've been complimented on my ability to teach in a way that makes my students learn very quickly. I was trained in the classical and pop/rock genres. I've toured with choirs throughout Ch
ina, and the United States (including Carnegie Hall), and I have also toured with rock bands in Spain, Mexico, Central America, Peru, and throughout the U.S.A.

I've worked with various vocal coaches including Maxayn Lewis (Who has worked with Celine Dion and Britney Spears), and I am currently the lead singer (also playing guitar & piano) in the alternative rock band "Stripe Coats". In August of 2009, this band released a 5-song EP and after a month we landed a record deal with label Tate Music Group. In August 3rd of 2010, Stripe Coats released their 11-song album under the band name Kaden. This album features artists such as guitarist Michael Thompson (played for Michael Jackson, Christina Aguilera), and drummer John Robinson (played for Quincy Jones, Elton John). The album also contains three songs that were recorded and produced by Producer Wyn Davis (producer of No Doubt, Sublime). Wyn Davis said, "Stripe Coats is one of the most promising new bands to come through Total Access [Studios] in a long time.  After doing records and watching young bands enter and exit the studio for over 30 years, it is STILL very exciting to work with a band that brings so much love, passion, and skill to what they do."

Stripe Coats™' songs are on rotation on Live 365 Internet Radio, and TMG Internet Radio. Our songs have also been featured on Alcoa Tennessee'™s Love 89.1 Radio and on hundreds of other radio stations, such as Refuge, CSN, and WCTL.

We Love Mr. Joe!!!

Joe is very patient with my daughter. He truly wants her to learn and understand what she is learning and most of all to enjoy music. He goes at her pace while still encouraging her to set goals for herself. He will not move forward until she has mastered what she has learned.

Music teacher that motivates his students.

My daughter has taken group and individual music lessons with Jose for three years. He is a teacher that meets students at their instructional level and motivates them to give their best effort in their learning. He also encourages my daughter with singing; he gives her vocal lessons in addition to guitar and piano. Jose also offers my daughter a safe learning environment. As a parent of a teenager, I greatly appreciate his patience with my daughter.

About Samara

Samara R is a contemporary classical music composer and educator based in Southern California. Textural elements, unusual instrumentation, extended performance techniques, and imagery inspiration combine themselves to form her compositional sound.

Samara is currently pursuing a Master of Music degree from the Bob Cole Conservatory of Music at California State University, Long Beach. She graduated cum laude from the University of California, San Diego with a bachelor’s degree in music composition, and was selected to participate in the prestigious honors program, which culminated in a solo h

Samara is great with our daughter. She recommends songs that our daughter likes and she asks my daughter to choose songs that she likes. She sings along with her when necessary to help her find the right notes and plays piano beautifully. Our daughter looks forward to the lessons with Samara.

As Samara's colleague at UCSD, I had the privilege of collaborating with her on various musical projects and observing her composition process from start to finish. She's a creative, talented and ambitious musician who is familiar with various musical instruments and techniques. More than that, she is a dedicated educator: she has extensive knowledge of musical pedagogy and is always looking for opportunities for further professional development. I highly recommend her for students of all levels!

Our daughter took voice and piano lessons with Samara for about 6 months in San Diego. She had never had lessons before but within that short time fame our daughter learned and progressed at an unbelievable pace.

Samara is patient and extremely talented with her gifts as well as with children. Our daughter thoroughly enjoyed all her lessons with Samara and we were definitely sad to see her go.

About Carl

During your first lesson I do a computer analysis of your voice, I find out what your goals are in singing, what your favorite kinds of music are, and I take you in the direction you want to go and show you how to get there in the shortest possible time.

Think you're the only one who feels that terrifying nervousness? Most everyone does, including the biggest stars. I've written a book about it entitled, "How To Conquer Nervousness For Singers", and I'll teach you to not only handle it, but to direct its energy into your singing, making your performance soar. I've also written, "How To G
et Standing Ovations For Singers" to teach you to drive your audience to their feet for a standing ovation.

I always record my students so that they know how they sound to others. I also make a CD of them singing to background music if they wish, included in the cost of the lessons for no extra charge.

Learn to sing beautifully, and most important, emotionally. Learn the parts of your vocal instrument, How each works, How they work together. Develop Breath support (80% of singing). Learn "The Singer's Formant", that "ringing" sound of professionals. Learn how to conquer nervousness, learn about Resonance, Overtones, Vibrato, How to sing high notes, Learn the "singing vowels", and more.

I would rather teach singing than eat chocolate, and if you knew how much I like chocolate, you'd know my passion for teaching singing. I've been studying voice since third grade, and teaching singing for eighteen years.

I've had nine singing teachers myself, so I know just how you feel. I get you comfortable, and I listen closely to what you want to do and where you want to go with your singing voice.

My students learn all the important aspects of singing right away, rather than drawing them out over time.

I teach beginner, intermediate, advanced, and professional students of all ages.

I teach all styles of singing, including pop, blues, gospel, classical voice, rock, jazz, SCAT singing, belting, country and western, and RAP.

I teach singing in English, Italian, Spanish, and German.

As my singing student you'll have access to the four books I've written on singing: SING BETTER FAST: a complete but concise treatise on vocal technique (It includes a Practice CD with a free recording studio program to install into your computer); How to conquer nervousness for singers, how to get standing ovations for singers, and sing better fast 2, advanced singing. These four books are the most current and relevant works on these subjects available today.

My Bachelor's and Master's Degrees are from California State University Dominguez Hills.

Put your singing voice in my hands. You'll love what happens.

*** Lesson Details ***
My introductory class includes a computer analysis of your singing voice, then describes the main parts of your vocal instrument, how each works, and how they work together. It teaches you what a song is, and how to sing a song well right away.

During the first lesson I record every student and play it back, both for computer analysis, and also so the student can hear how they sound to others. Remember the first time you heard yourself in a recording and said, "That's not me!" I'll explain that to you, and why it's so important to record yourself and listen to your recordings.

Your lessons are designed toward YOUR goals and desires in singing, and include specific guides for your between lessons practice sessions.

I also teach how to sing karaoke and impress an audience. I've been studying audience psychology for more than 15 years, and my entire orientation in teaching singing is to, "DRIVE YOUR AUDIENCE TO THEIR FEET FOR A STANDING OVATION!"

I record CD's with custom labels for students, with their picture, included in the price of the lessons. You can have a CD of yourself singing for you to to play, to give to your family and friends, or perhaps to sell.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Lessons are in my home studio, with recording equipment which we use to record you in lessons and on CD's, high quality studio monitor speakers that let you sound exactly the way you sound to others, high quality recording microphones, computer, control panel, keyboard, and music stands.

*** Travel Equipment ***
When I come to your location for lessons I bring portable equipment to do a computer analysis of the student's voice, and to record and play back my student's progress for analysis and discussion.

*** Specialties ***
I teach singing in English, Italian, Spanish, & German, in all styles, including Pop, Blues, Gospel, Classical, Rock, Jazz, Scat Singing, Belting, Country and Western, and Rap.

You will like Carl as your instructor. He is an expert at what he does, especially voice analysis with techniques to better any singing voice. He knows from A to Z what needs to be done to correct and improve, and this he imparts with specific instructions, coupled with lots of encouragement. He has generously worked with both my husband (a very good voice) and me (a bit of the ordinary) and we have always been satisfied with his professionalism and love of the art. Thanks, Carl.

I'm a guitarist for fun in a 3-piece band with a couple of my friends. We've had some difficulty securing a singer to jam with us so I figured that I would give it a shot.

Upon discovering TakeLessons.com, I found Carl's page and immediately decided to book lessons with him. What a fantastic decision that was! He's an excellent instructor and will assist you in becoming the best singer you can be. In particular, he emphasizes finding your own, unique voice, as opposed to imitating others; this alone was invaluable advice for a singing novice such as myself.

Highly recommended!

Got my first computer diagnosis of my singing voice and what a blast. Carl used it as a basis to show me what my tongue, soft palate, lips, and jaw do when I'm singing really well. He's my fourth singing teacher, and my best.

Matthew M.

Lakewood, CA

About Matthew

Music has been a part of my life since I was 5 years old, when my father would record my brother and I singing. I always loved singing and learned many of my favorite songs as a child.

I started playing the trumpet in the 4th grade, which has led me all the way to receiving my degrees in Trumpet Performance and Music Education! I was lucky enough to attend one of the nation's top music schools, The Peabody Institute, and I now work toward my Master's degree at California State University, Long Beach. I have enjoyed performing in everything from big-band-lead to principal trumpet in the orc
hestra, leading brass quintets and brass ensembles, and much more! The trumpet has been a huge passion for as long as I can remember now!

While I was learning songs as a child, I decided I wanted to join a band! Now here we are 10 years later and I've have the fortune of performing as a lead singer in bands across the country, and let me tell you there is no bigger thrill than getting in-front of a crowd full of cheering fans, performing music you love.

I've also been playing the guitar for just under 10 years. Playing the guitar has been both a complete joy, but also a fantastic learning experience. I have been learning songs of my favorite artists and even written my own material, and having the opportunity to immerse myself in my favorite music and create music of my own has taught me so much more about music and being a musician. I hope to impart this experience onto all of my students.

Whether it's trumpet, voice, or guitar, I love all things music and my #1 objective is to for my students to learn how it feels to experience what music REALLY has to offer, so to you reading this, let's make some noise!

*** Lesson Details ***
For starters, understand that you're going to have a blast! Within months of working together, I'll have you playing your favorite songs, or feeling prepared for that upcoming audition. I remember what it was like to have second thoughts about auditioning and performance, and I'll make sure those thoughts are a thing of the past for you!

During our lessons, I enjoy addressing the material you have to work on, whether in school or just for your own enjoyment. At the same time, I will present music and materials of my own, and I encourage you to do the same!

I have always enjoyed learning from my students as they have learned from myself, and I could only hope to express how rewarding it is when I see a student of mine progress from week to week and achieve their own goals.

Whether you are a beginner or an advanced player, you can be guaranteed we'll make steady progress and we will achieve your goals. Get ready to wow your friends and family!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Metronome
Post-it Notes
Music Stand(s)
Chairs
Computer/Internet
Keyboard
Guitar(s)

*** Travel Equipment ***
I would provide utilities including music stand, metronome, some external source of pitch.

I expect the student to bring any and all assigned music/material they wish to work on. The student will also begin the lesson prepared with basic necessities, including a pencil (please, no pens) and all music assigned from prior lesson (if this is a first-lesson, bring any/all music you currently have and/or are working on). Vocal students will bring a bottle of water. Trumpet students will have their own valve oil and mouthpiece (if not originally included with your horn).

*** Specialties ***
Trumpet methods include (not limited to) Arban's, Clarke, Sachs, Rubank, Getchell, Adam, Schlossberg, Colin, Bai Lin.

For instruments outside the trumpet, methods will address school curriculum, unless student has advanced beyond provided materials.

I strongly encourage students of voice, guitar, and piano to pick material of their choosing.

Classical and rock are the genres to which I am most attracted

I've been taking lessons with Matt for about 2 months now. Right away it was a very comfortable environment and vibe, which is important, especially as a beginning, aspiring singer. Takes the lessons slow and easy going at first, then jumps into exercises and focuses on directly what style the student is interested in. Very awesome dude, would definitely recommend! Thanks Matt!
