Viva Z.

San Jose, CA

About Viva

Degree: Piano Performance, Eastman School of Music.

As a concert pianist, Viva grew up performing and teaching music. Viva graduated from the Eastman School of Music under world-renowned piano pedagogue Nelita True.
Over the years, she has won numerous national piano competitions in the states and Canada and debuted with numerous professional orchestras including Eastman Symphony Orchestra and Parkdale Orchestra. Additionally, she held numerous solo and student recitals recognized by TV stations such WCTV, as well as several newspapers including the Boston Globe, Andover Townsman, and Wil
mington Advocate newspapers.
In addition to performing, Viva's greatest passion is in teaching. Her beginner students grow an average of 2 years worth of study within the first year. Her former piano students' levels ranged from beginner to advanced, and their ages ranged from 4 to 30. Two of her previously held student recitals were recognized by the Boston Globe and as a result of its success, one of which was recorded by WCTV for broadcast. Viva also speak English, Spanish, and Chinese fluently and have taught in these languages.

Theory and Pedagogical Approach:
"My students are not just masters of notes, but also masters of performance. My pedagogical approach centers on developing technique, theory, harmony, aural skills, but also artistry and showmanship. Apart from being taught the structural and aesthetic components of music, my students are taught the art of performance. Each of them is a showman and a stage performer. Two student recitals are held annually, and all friends and family are encouraged to join."

*** Lesson Details ***
Each lesson focus on developing technique, aural skills and performance. Technique strengthens and develops students' fingers and provides the foundation. Aural skills includes ear training and singing, will develop the students' sense of pitch and tone. Performance will develop students' ability to master new songs and get ready to perform in front of others.
For beginners and intermediate students, I use the Alfred Series, Bastien Series and Thompson Series. For advanced students, heavy repertoire by well-known composers will be assigned.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Upright piano, seating for parents, living room

*** Travel Equipment ***
A piano

*** Specialties ***
Levels: Beginner's, intermediate and advanced piano. While the focus is classical, there is also a lot of time for popular, jazz and ragtime. Lessons can be taught in English, Spanish, and Chinese. Molly R.

Hayward, CA

About Molly

I have been teaching for 14 years: kids, teens-even beginner vocalists in their seventies! Rockers, an "Idol" finalist, church musicians, lapsed opera singers, preschoolers. ...these are just a few of singers I have worked with, in person, in the classroom, and ONLINE (I just love teaching singers all over the country and the world!) .

What you get in voice lessons with me: laughter as you learn! I have learned solid classical vocal technique from the very best . I have trained with respected opera singers who have performed with companies such as Lyric Opera of Chicago, as well as leader
s in vocal pedagogy. I believe everyone deserves the same useful tools- no matter what it is you like to sing!

I am patient and customize each and every lesson. Need more time on ear training? No problem . How about beginning music theory? I can help with that, too. Are you feeling more confident, and want to focus more on song polishing and getting into the heart of your songs? Let's do it! Confidence an issue? I am a pro with very shy people. I'll get you out of your shell, relaxed, and having fun right away so we can free that voice of yours! I have worked with many singers who have been diagnosed with anxiety: you're in good hands and you can trust me with your voice.

I am also a drama teacher who has worked with groups as well as individuals. I love working with beginning acting students! I'll assist with monologue prep, improvisation, voice for the stage, body awareness, and more. I love being on stage and want you to see how fun it is to jump in and let go,too!

If you're interested in beginner ear training or music theory, I'd love to help you with that as well. I present it in a no-nonsense and fun manner! I'll provide you with simple worksheets to increase your confidence in learning the language of music, as well as run you through increasingly challenging patterns and sight reading for the ear training. Don't be afraid: I make it easy and customize it all.

I have been singing for over 20 years. Performances with the Lira Ensemble and Opera on Tap Chicago, and in master classes with international opera stars Alan Held and Lorna Haywood. Coaching with Collaborative Works Chicago and Rossini Opera Festival. Additional studies in Rock Vocals, Voice Care, Improvisational Comedy, Holistic Voice, Acting, Foreign languages, Dalcroze, Speaking Voice for Singers, , Commercial Vocal Styles/Belting with Lisa Popeil, teacher mentoring workshop with Maestro David Jones. Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance. Additional workshops in Vocal Pedagogy with David Sabella-Mills, Jeannie LoVetri. Dr. Karen Prokop.

Certified CoreSinging Instructor- one of only a few in the U.S. trained by Meribeth Dayme, PhD, respected clinician and authority in vocal pedagogy and author of "The Singing Book".

My students do a variety of great things! One was a top 12 "American Idol" finalist. Current students perform in musicals, top rated choirs, and professional rock , jazz, and blues bands. Many have won awards for their singing at competitions such as NATS. Students of mine have also been accepted to prestigious performing arts high schools and undergraduate music programs.

I think if you can speak, you can sing. Everyone can and should sing! Don't let anything hold you back. I am a people person that is very passionate about music and singing, and want to be the teacher you'll trust with your voice. Come laugh and learn with me!

*** Lesson Details ***

DeAnna breaks her teaching down into segments focusing on smaller aspects, such as technique (scales and arpeggios), reading, theory, and repertoire, which I find to be pleasantly approachable in addition to giving me concrete smaller goals to work toward every week. The pieces I learn for repertoire span many historical styles, including classical, Baroque, and even some modern pieces (which are usually arrangements I've found online of songs I enjoy).

Before I started lessons with DeAnna, I had some musical skill but not to the level I wanted. One of those songs I wanted to learn to play had a section so difficult as to seem impossible every time I tried to play it. With DeAnna's help, I was able to master that song in 4 months, to the point where I can play it through on a whim, completely memorized. And even of the songs we haven't gone over, I'm confident I can handle them on my own, using the approaches DeAnna has taught me.

In addition to her skills as a teacher, DeAnna is quite personable and patient, reasonable in her expectations yet encouraging me to push myself even more, understanding when life interferes with practice, and just all-around fun to work with. I'm always looking forward to the next lesson!
