Sachie T.

Sunnyvale, CA

About Sachie

Born to an award winning conductor and music teacher, I was exposed to music at a very early age. With my father’s supervision, I began my piano and ear-training at the age of three. At age four, I joined the Yamaha musical after-school program and engaged in group lessons. As I got older, group lessons gave way to private instruction as I learned and played piano passionately through my childhood.

I was born and raised in Hiroshima, Japan and left my native land in 2006 to the United States to better my education. In school I studied general music, with an emphasis on piano. Additionally,
I have also studied Early Childhood Development and Education.

*** Lesson Details ***
I tailor my lessons depending on the age and experience level of my students, but in general I believe in the Suzuki method as one of the tools for first steps. The Suzuki method is a very well established philosophy of learning that focuses on ear and practical training. By training ear and musicality while learning proper finger position, the child improves without spending too much time at the start learning note reading.
As the child quickly progresses I music theory and reading follow.

I am a passionate teacher and believe in the musical potential of all students. I am eager to work your child to help unlock their abilities and motivation. It is my view that communication is a two-way road and it is excited to provide instruction while properly communicating with her students. Through this, I can overcome each individual’s obstacles and also enhance their inner strengths. With the right instruction, developing the right motivation, and of course practice, she feels every student has the potential for great success.

*** Specialties ***
Classical, Jazz, Modern, Traditional

Sachie taught my daughter Piano. She was very easy to work with. She tailors her teaching in consultation with the parents. For example, during the school year my daughter was not keeping pace with 5 homeworks a week. I spoke to Sachie, she adjusted it to 2 per week and my daughter was learning more. The reason that Sachie is not teaching her any more is because we moved and it's too long a commute for her. Otherwise, I'd happily have her as my daughter's piano teacher.

Branden N.

Sunnyvale, CA

About Branden

Branden is a successful graduate in music with a concentration in composition and jazz performance, completing his degree in only three years. He is a passionate performer as well as a dedicated teacher. He was awarded Cum laude for his great academic achievement. Branden is an accomplished songwriter, composer, musician, and teacher. Originally born in Chicago, Branden is now based in San Jose area, playing various events throughout the South Bay.

Branden has been hired to play local gigs as well as a contract to tour with a jazz band. His experience in teaching guitar for the last 4 years
has ranged from teaching elementary school classes to private lessons.

*** Lesson Details ***
From past experiences teaching students ranging from 7 to 14, Branden has developed many methods in accommodating the different learning styles of students. In general, there is a very casual atmosphere that stresses learning without the strict environment of a classroom. Beginners will be comfortably eased into learning, learning some music theory as well as fundamental musicianship skills along the way. More experienced players will be taught more advanced skills, while delving more into the understanding of the music they are playing.

Students will be encouraged to learn the music that they enjoy listening to, and collaborate with the instructor in developing lesson plans. It is important to bring out the most in the student by allowing the student to feel as involved in their learning as the instructor.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Multiple guitars, two amplifiers, pedalboard, comfortable private space.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can provide an guitar amplifier and guitar, though I generally expect the student to provide his own guitar. I also expect students to purchase their own books, though I can provide certain sheet music and supplementary supplies if necessary.

*** Specialties ***
I can play a variety of styles, though my specialty lies in the field of jazz. While I may not be the most experienced classical player, I am still quite proficient in classical guitar. My biggest strength is combining classical technique with jazz songs and styles.

Great for grown ups too!

ABOUT TAKE LESSONS
I came across TakeLessons and was skeptical about what I would find. The customer service has been excellent (thank you Rafael!). Okay, like any company that would like you to enroll in their service, you might find them pushy. But if you're really interested in learning music of any sort, then go to TakeLesons to get your start. I did and I'm happy :-#

ABOUT BRANDEN
As a "grown up", finding guitar lessons around the Bay Area is no easy task. I was pretty sure Branden would be impatient and patronizing given I'm really old and don't know the ABCs of music.

I was very, very nervous driving up to Branden's with my acoustic guitar. I mean, would he just look at me and say you're too old to learn anything?

What a refreshing surprise! My fears were imaginary.

I've had 2 lessons so far. Branden is easy going, absolutely gets it and is no-fuss. We stick to our lessons, he is quick to point out where I'm going wrong and very patient #please don't change that Branden!#. He also highlights techniques to help learn smarter. Make sure you take your notebook with you when you go, he gives homework and it would be nice if you track it in the same place.

Also, I'm worried about booking appointments at different times and TakeLessons/Branden assured me that can be worked out later. Good to know.

Branden is a great bass guitar teacher.

Branden is a great teacher. He is skilled and patient. He understands that beginners want to get started on challenging songs as soon as possible and he helps with that. After 3 months of lessons, he helped me get accepted to my school's jazz band.

Dayv is fantastic! He taught my 11 year old son the clarinet over the summer. He improved dramatically in just 4 lessons. Dayv drove to our house in Mountain View, which was great. My son really liked Dayv and now loves to play the clarinet.

David D. is an ideal music teacher for me, an adult learner. I appreciate his two-pronged approach: (1) instruction in piano and (2) appreciation of great music. He prods me to plow through the basic piano books, and he provides insights along with YouTube links to performances of some of the world's best music.

Dayv's depth of knowledge and his dedication to music are infectious. He has also been very accommodating to my changing schedule. I always look forward to my piano lessons. Dayv has given me a joyful appreciation for music.

Cecilia C.

San Jose, CA

About Cecilia

I earned my B.A. in Music with a minor in Italian Studies from Santa Clara University. I am currently getting my master's degree in education from Santa Clara University while working on a high school teaching credential. I have taught students from 5 year old to 70 year old and I studied classical singing with the most renown singers and teachers. I also had special training in music in Italy. I helped many people with pitch issues, tone quality, musicality, performance, and acting. My students were able to build their confidence; they turned from beginners to performers. I have performed wit
h many great singers around the world and have experience singing in opera productions, choirs, solo recitals, to name a few. The knowledge my students get are the essence from not only all my musical experience, also all my teachers and colleagues' essence.

I set my expectations high for all students. Students are expected to learn all the assigned music and practice throughout the week. Music is fun but it is also not just simple business. However, students' progress will vary. As long you are eager to learn, passion about music, diligent with the work, you will far exceed even your own expectations.

Most of my students improve tremendously in a short period of time. I not only teach them singing, phrasing, and language, but I stress vocal techniques, emotions behind music, acting in character, and performing as a professional.

I'm male and sing baritone, but Cecilia's knowledge expands across all voices. Each week pushes you, and each lesson she is consistently helping me with my singing technique/habits. This challenging nature is exactly what you want in a private teacher in order to truly improve. Her skills and experience are also what made me choose her as a vocal coach. I will definitely continue to take lessons from her.

What Are the Best Songs to Sing to Show Off Your Vocal Range?
Many singing teachers agree that one of the most alarming things today is tuning in to television talent competitions and seeing nine-year-olds singing opera. Not only are the arias generally age-inappropriate, but they make vocal demands on the singer that often requires a training period longer than the child has been alive! Less publicly, but equally common, are singers who wrong-foot themselves with inappropriate repertoire at local singing competitions and music festivals. They might pick
