Brian G.

Evergreen Park, IL

I am able to teach piano on all levels and am strongest on this instrument. Currently I mainly work with beginners on the instrument but can teach a variety of levels.

About Brian

Hello, my name is Brian and I am currently studying my Bachelor's in Music Education at VanderCook College of Music. It is the only college in the world that specializes in specifically Music Education, and has been since 1909. The school teaches us a basic understanding of 17 instruments and voice, while also teaching theory, aural skills, music history, professional ed courses, and includes a large number of various ensembles. Because of this, I'm able to teach some basic concepts on all of the band/orchestra instruments. Personally, I started taking piano lessons in 2000 and started drum se
t lessons in 2002. I've always had a dual musician life after that point, and was apart of the band and jazz band programs from 5th grade until now (sophomore in college). While attending Marist High School, I taught myself guitar, bass guitar, banjo, harmonica, and tin whistle. I expanded my concepts of music and genres, and find myself very knowledgeable of classical, jazz, rock, blues, and pop on piano, and fluent in jazz, blues, rock, Latin, and pop styles on drum set. I am willing to teach any student their musical needs as they prosper through their lives as an artist. I hope to one day teach in a band setting with my degree, offer private lessons, and compose music on the side.

*** Lesson Details ***
For lessons, I'm ready to work on making some music while always having fun. As the lessons progress, I start to expect more from the student regarding retaining knowledge and muscle memory throughout learning their technique and repertoire. This will come with consistent practice. After 3 or 6 months, the beginning students will find themselves recognizing note names, rhythms, meter, melodies and harmonies, and mechanics of their instrument. My goal is to keep the student interested in the music while learning about themselves.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Living room w/ piano

Basement w/ drum set, guitars, bass, amps, harmonicas

both have seating for parents

*** Travel Equipment ***
I would expect my students to provide themselves with their own instrument but I would provide my own in addition to theirs while teaching, unless there is the sharing of a piano. I can also provide various sheet music.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in classical, jazz, rock, and blues for piano. I specialize in rudimentary drumming, rock, jazz, and latin for drums/percussion. I believe in making sure the student learns as much as possible about his or her instrument, can improve each day, and ultimately can have fun while playing.

This teacher has many great qualities in the field of music education.

I am learning a great deal from this teacher about the piano and life qualities in general. I have taken the tools I've learned from each lesson to apply in my own practice to develop myself as a musician. I would recommend Brian Goodman to anyone interested in learning about music.

Kristin S.

Chicago, IL

In piano, we will begin with simple music designed to build strength and dexterity in your hands. We will focus on learning note reading from the beginning, so I must strongly recommend that young children are able to track words, if not already reading. We will learn a variety of repertoire, including classical, pop, holiday, folk, and much more!

About Kristin

How wonderful it is that you have decided to take lessons! My name is Kristin, and I cannot wait to begin this journey into music with you. I have been teaching private lessons for nearly a decade, and been teaching music and choir in the classroom since 2011. Music has been my passion for my entire life. I had decided by the time I was 13 that I had to pass on this love of music, and ultimately achieved my degree in Music Education. I graduated Magna Cum Laude in the top ten of my class from VanderCook College of Music.

Tracy B.

Berwyn, IL

About Tracy

I have been teaching individual and group lessons for 12+ years. Many of my students have won trophies at the Granquist music competition and also play in local youth orchestras. My own youth string ensemble plays publicly at many popular local venues several times a year. I enjoy exposing my students to the finer points of being a professional musician such as the camaraderie, team work, creativity (creating harmonies, tailoring arrangements to fit student’s level) and of course, stage presence. I am very proud of my students. It is so gratifying to see their confidence build with each new
skill they master.

*** Lesson Details ***
My approach to teaching is to combine fundamentals with “adventure.” I encourage students to experiment with their instrument and have quite a few budding composers. No two students learn in the same way, so I don’t use the same strategy for each individual. I believe music should be fun and rewarding. I like to expose students to many different types of music, i.e.; jazz, pop, blues, folk and of course, classical. Students are more likely to practice music that speaks to their personality.

My teaching environment is very laid back. I expect my students to practice, but I don’t read them the riot act if they show up to a lesson not having practiced much the week before. I encourage them to practice more the next week and I give them strategies for how to fit practice time into their schedule along with the most efficient way to practice their pieces.

I encourage parents to sit in on their child’s lesson, but I don’t require it. The more a parent is informed about their child’s goals, the better they are able to assist, support and facilitate the student’s practice. Involved parents contribute greatly to a child’s success.

I love teaching adults too! It is never too late to learn an instrument and the rewards carry over into all aspects of life. As with children, music makes us all smarter. Research proves this. We learn complicated spacial and math skills without even realizing it; we’re having too much fun!

I have annual recitals for private students. I speak Spanish.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Basement studio finished and separate from house

*** Travel Equipment ***
Sometimes music. I can refer students to instrument rental or purchase places, but do not have instruments to provide. I can obtain music for the students if they prefer, otherwise I will tell them what and where to buy.

*** Specialties ***
I use Suzuki and other books for material, but my teaching is more traditional. I use actual bowhold from start. My own invention - pinky AND thumb houses. Music reading is introduced fairly early. A little at a time and it's painless.
