Jesus G.

Chicago, IL

A solid piano technique from the beginning. One of the fundamental parts in learning to play piano is to learn the basics of piano technique, which includes proper posture of the body when sitting to play piano, proper fingers, hands, and arms position.

The proper use of the arm rotation, wrist flexibility and how the wrists and arms help to lead the direction of the phrases are fundamentals to attain a beautiful and rich tone .

About Jesus

Jesus Garcia has more than 15 years experience teaching piano and 5 years teaching the Suzuki piano method, with dozens of his students playing successfully in recitals, competitions, and auditions around the Chicago area.

He completed his Masters of Music in Piano Performance with a scholarship from Roosevelt University, Chicago, Il. Renowned Mexican pianist Jorge Federico Osorio and Dr. Ludmila Lazard were his advisers and professors. In addition, during his program at Roosevelt University, Jesus took a course aimed at developing figure base and harpsichord performance with Dr. David S
chrader.

In 2012 he was certified piano Suzuki teacher by the Suzuki Association of the Americas.

Mr. Garcia performs solo recitals and lieder by Rachmaninoff, Shubert, and Schumann with his wife the soprano Darina Assenova in festivals such as “Shubertiade”, which is organized by Pianoforte Foundation in Chicago and Make Music Chicago.

He often performs in Cultural Festivals in Mexico and United States and has performed with major orchestras as a soloist and as accompanist.

All his piano students are active as performers. Jesus always encourages them to perform in public, looking for piano festivals, competitions, recitals, auditions and any opportunities where they can showcase their talent. His students have been accepted in pre-college music schools in Chicago.

*** Lesson Details ***
I focus on the basic piano technique skills when I start with a new student, it includes good posture of the body, good hand shape, firm fingertips, loose arm weight, good position of each finger, and flexible wrist. I always look for a rich tone production when playing each key of the keyboard in order to create a beautiful musical discourse throughout the piano piece.

When the student is from 3 to 6 years old I use the Suzuki method. When the student is older than 6 I combine the traditional and Suzuki method having great results with the student's performances.

My Philosophy: All my students learn to play piano in an artistry, confident, and joyful way.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Lessons in living room with upright piano, couches, bookshelves, etc. Parents can sit in on lessons.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can provide copies of some piano works. But I also expect my students to buy their own books and have their own instrument.

*** Specialties ***
For beginners, I use either the Faber or Thomson method. I can teach the Suzuki method too. I specialize in Classical music, but I can also teach pop music for piano.

My girls started taking lessons from Mr. Garcia at age 4. He is an excellent instructor and keeps lessons and weekly practice assignments fun and challenging. He uses a combination of methods to best suit the interests of each of my daughters. They really look forward to their weekly lessons. I have seen significant progress in their piano skills. Mr, Garcia is very good at acknowledging their accomplishments which is extremely important for young, beginning piano players. I highly recommend him.

Caleb M.

Chicago, IL

I give beginner piano students a great head start in their musical education, with a solid foundation covering piano technique and an introduction to music theory which would serve them well whether they continue to pursue piano, or pick up another instrument along the way.

About Caleb

Caleb moved from his hometown of Wichita, Kansas, to Chicago in 2008 to attend DePaul University, where he received his Bachelor’s in Trumpet Performance studying under Matt Lee and Tage Larsen. Since then, Caleb has picked up a variety of regular gigs across a wide spectrum of styles, genres, and types of events.

Caleb performs in Chicago with soul-pop band The Right Now, the progressive Pocket Radio, the soulful Bassel and the Supernaturals, the genre-defying Willy Dynomite, the Latin-grooved Contrabanda, and funk outfit Nasty Snacks. He has played in horn sections for Latin, funk, and bi
g-band jazz bands, as well as Afrobeat, indie rock, R&B/soul, and hip-hop/rap groups.

He has also played the national anthem for the president at opening night of the Chicago Bulls season, been featured at Chicago Blackhawks games, principal trumpet in symphony orchestras, pit orchestras and in the DePaul Screamin’ Demons Pep Band at Madison Square Garden. Caleb also regularly lends his solo talents to wedding parties and church services, and is one-fourth of the Chicago for-hire horn section Revolution Horns. Other musical endeavors include a performance on the Steve Harvey Show, playing trumpet for the Broadway musical I Love Lucy in downtown Chicago, and a coveted chance to perform in master classes for his idols Adolph “Bud” Herseth and Chris Martin.

Caleb has been teaching privately in the Chicago area for 5 years now and is eager to teach students with any amount of experience, especially those who are eager to approach music from a variety of perspectives.

---

I believe that the best way to teach a brass instrument at any level, is simply to check in and make sure that the student has a great understanding of what a beautiful sound is on their instrument. This is done in a patient and positive environment, filled with the best possible music making to serve as a model to aspire to. With small, attainable goals and encouragement to practive at least a small amount on a daily basis, you cannot help of improve, and hopefully have a good time playing whatever music interests you while doing so. The journey is a bit different for everyone, but anyone can make a beautiful sound, and go from there!

---

I like to strike a balance of teaching out of various method books(depending on the student and their level of ability, some are more suitable than others of course and I help guide the way), and learning to play by ear, which can be almost anything the student wants to learn, provided it's not overly complicated for them. Technique has it's place, but is certainly not the whole story. Learning music that is fun, while at the same time learning to get better at your instrument, makes the overall process enjoyable and rewarding. Once you have the right tools, music is something that can be fulfilling for the rest of your life, especially when you learn to do it in a fun and healthy way.

Caleb has been teaching my son trumpet for the past 4 years. He is a very talented teacher who is musically gifted, as well as patient and kind.

Loving music and playing trumpet has enriched my son's life, both socially and emotionally. He is currently first chair in his middle school band and plans to pursue band in high school. His pleasure in playing with his peers and his pride in his accomplishments are wonderful to see. Last year, he played "New York, New York" as part of a three piece band at a school event and in March 2017, he will play the entire score of the Lion King with the pit orchestra for the 8th grade play.

But the best part as a parent is seeing that he often walks around the house humming a random tune under his breath, even when he isn't aware of it. It makes me smile to see him be so happy!

Thank you, Caleb!

I had a great experience taking piano lessons with Caleb and would highly recommend him to any friend who was looking to take trumpet or piano lessons. He made sure to teach the theory behind the music, as well as the technique of playing it, and encouraged me to feel free to choose the direction, pace, and focus of the lessons.

Caleb is the best trumpet instructor I have ever had! He is thorough, explains his methods and why he is teaching what he is teaching, helps his students develop good practices that will be extremely beneficial down the line, and is flexible with how to structure a lesson depending on what you want out of it. On top of all that, he is amiable, interesting, and professional. I feel very good taking trumpet lessons from a professional trumpet player; especially this one.

My teaching method is based on Russian classical school and I am happy to share it with everybody who is interested. I custom design my piano lessons that corresponds to each student's ability and experience.

About Val

Whether you are an experienced musician or just in the beginning of your educational journey, I perhaps, can help you to advance you potentials and bring your skills to the next level.

First and foremost I am an expert in teaching voice. Not many teachers in Chicago have clients that are currently topping Billboard charts and get signed by major record labels. I do!!!

I taught in Paris, Barcelona, Dubai and New York and have an extensive experience in working with a wide variety of musical genres including Pop, R&B, JAZZ, Rock, Country, Musical Theatre, Gospel and last but not least Clas
sical, which I can proudly can call my background.

Not only I have been continually developing my own art of coaching and excellence of teaching music to others, but also making much needed connections in the music industry. I am selective who I work with, but I do give a career advice and try to match talent with the best opportunities as they come.

Furthermore, I have a strong expertise in teaching piano, music theory, ear training, orchestration and arrangement.
As a working studio producer myself I have been tutoring a number of domestic and international singers, artists, musicians and bands, and have been helping them to further their projects and careers.

I assist my students with help on discovering their artistic potential and guide them to overcome obstacles to make the most of their training. I provide my students with technique that will last them a lifetime and build up skills that are necessary for a successful career. Not only I nurture my students' natural talents and train them to reach their musical goals. but also persuade them to expand their networks in order to get where they want to be. For those who are interested in learning piano, and composition, I highly receommend Val. As a insturctor who is very skillful, responsbile, yet has a decency and caring heart. He will adjust to your comfortable level of education with a practical advices and sometimes assignments. Coming from very competetive Russian educational background, he understands a hardship and competetive nature. However, he is one of the few instructors who knows a good balance between a compsure and focused trainning. Having said that, I took a quite short lesson with him due to a limited time, however, I did feel productive and fun with his time. If you are determined to learn, I can tell you he would be the best choice!

Melodie F.

Chicago, IL

General interest music students can take Piano lessons, IF they already own a piano or minimally acceptable keyboard. Piano lessons differ from Classical Piano lessons by being more about what the student wants to learn, instead of following a scholarly path toward becoming an accomplished pianist. There will still be technical exercises, but they might be tailored to the goal of playing a certain style. Any music lessons you want to take that aren't listed specifically can be called "Piano" lessons, if you have a piano and want to discuss other options.

I can teach a little bit to beginners about playing by ear and using lead sheets, but My Thing is the old fashioned, old lady piano teacher you probably imagine. There are reasons that the traditional methods became traditional. They work.

If you want something a little less traditional, ask me about the method of Sight Reading I teach, which is a programmed learning approach to train the hand-eye coordination reflexes required ...

About Melodie

Label me Traditional, or Classical, or even Persnickety, but we all transcend labels. I can perform opera, simplify unifying concepts, teach folk singing, direct a church choir, suggest country repertoire, coach performance charisma, and even officiate a marriage ceremony as a Dudeist Priest. I also bake a mean pie.

I welcome you to consider me, a teacher with decades of experience, for casual yet traditional private music lessons. My residential studio is near the Ashland & Chicago intersection. I teach private lessons in singing, piano, and music theory. As partners, the student and I bui
ld a plan, balancing current aspirations with traditional methods, keeping practical value in mind. I recommend a weekly recurring lesson appointment, but I also allow Schedule-As-You-Go. That means you may schedule a lesson when you want one, subject to availability, instead of holding a repeating weekly time slot.

Singing and Voice:
Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced. All Singing and Voice students must read the section Your First Singing Lesson, found on each subject page. Ages 18-99. Singing and Voice lessons have to be at least 45min long, and are available in my office, online, and maybe off site. Ask about specialized "choir" lessons for individual sessions in choral technique and repertoire. See more details on each subject page.

Piano:
DO NOT BUY A "PIANO" with reduced size keys. The width of seven white keys is 16.4cm, and you should also have weighted keys and a sustain pedal. DO NOT try to teach your fingers to play piano on anything that has "full size keys" (which is a LIE) that measure 15.9cm. The retail store person is probably clueless, so take something to measure the keys with. I teach beginning up to intermediate. Ages 18-99. Available only in my office or maybe off site. I don't teach piano online. See more details on each subject page.

Music Theory:
Rudimentary and Beginning students only. Ages 18-99. Available in my office, online, and maybe off site. See more details on each subject page.

Prices for my office in Chicago near 800N/1600W, or online: (where available) 30min for $25, 45min for $36, 60min for $46. If you live within a mile of the Chicago Ave / Ashland Ave intersection we can discuss the possibility of me coming to your location for an additional $15 per lesson. You may ask about ages 7-17 or group rates for your location.

SOME IMPORTANT DETAILS TO CONSIDER:
- My home is not child proof. I am not prepared to welcome children into my home.
- The apartment is a high 2nd FLR walk-up.
- If you use too much fragrance of any kind I will refuse to breathe in your vicinity.
- Unless you are that person's legal guardian please do not purchase a surprise gift of a new student lesson package with me. Students need to make the decisions for themselves to begin lessons with me specifically.
- If you don't have a place to practice singing, don't take singing lessons. If you don't have regular access to a piano, or at least a minimally acceptable keyboard, don't take piano lessons. You can take beginning theory lessons with a plastic recorder flute, if that's all you've got, but a polytonal keyboard is much better.

You, and all students, must ACCEPT THE STRICT CANCELLATION POLICY. There is no makeup, rescheduling, or refunding of any lessons no-showed or cancelled later than 24hrs prior. Students can provide excuses (like acute illness) and request forgiveness for late cancellations, but expect no mercy for no-shows. Officially, if you have a lesson scheduled in less than 24hrs and you haven't already changed or cancelled it, you are paying for it unless I'm the one that changes it.

Check out my links, and make some decisions. I might be the instructor you're looking for.
