I graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a BS in Materials Science and Engineering and a BA in Spanish. While pursuing my undergraduate degrees, I tutored high school students in Upward Bound, a college preparatory program for first generation college students. After graduation, I served 26 months as a Peace Corps Volunteer Teacher in Ghana, West Africa. My classroom building was made of concrete and the walls had simple square openings with wooden shutters as windows. A tin roof covered the top of the building. Sometimes, the sound of the rain on the roof was so loud that I often had to stop teaching for several minutes until the rain lessened. It was an incredible experience that taught me so much about the world. I also taught Introductory Chemistry at my alma mater, and high school Chemistry and Algebra II at a private boarding school in New Hampshire. Overall, I have over 9 years of teaching and tutoring experience. *** Lesson Details *** When working with students, I emphasize understanding over memorization and give multiple examples to help reinforce important concepts. For instance, I guide the students through the problem by asking a series of questions. If I see that they are a little weak in a topic like factoring, I might spend 1-2 minutes reviewing that area. Also, for new formulas or unfamiliar topics, I help them find the answers in their textbooks or notes instead of giving them the answers directly.
