Music Theory with Michael S.

Hi! I'm Michael, a composer originally from England, now living in the Washington area. As a child I loved to play the piano, sing, and play the oboe in my youth orchestra, and through those activities I was exposed to the weird and wonderful world of new music. I developed a passion for composing, and went on to study at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, before winning a scholarship to study at Cornell University with the renowned composer Steven Stucky. While there, I worked closely with students on music theory, and with the choral ensembles, improving their ear training and helping them understand what they were singing from an analytical perspective, as well as furnishing them with historical and stylistic context. My enthusiasm for music, and for art, literature, science, and the wonders of the world always spills over into my teacher, and I love to help my students to develop passion for their interests and refine their knowledge.
