    About El S.

    About Music: El S. is a clarinetist, improviser, and performance consultant based in Baltimore, MD. She holds a BA in music from Bucknell University, where she was awarded the Barbara Watson Grever Prize and the Bucknell Prize in Music. El is a passionate advocate for free improvisation in undergraduate music programs. She did graduate research on free improvisation and improvisation pedagogy at the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa, where she also founded and directed the Hawai’i Improvisation Intensive Ensemble. El has studied clarinet with Henry Miyamura, Colleen Hartung, and Elisabeth Stimpert; piano with Barry Hannigan; composition with William Duckworth; and free improvisation with Phil Haynes. About Japanese: El has taught Japanese to English-speaking students since 2013. She uses a multi-faceted approach to language learning; incorporating all components of reading, speaking, listening, and writing. El received her BA with a minor in Japanese language in 2010.
