My name is Daryl and I love music! I am a professional saxophone player and teacher. I also teach drum set, percussion, and music theory. I have a background heavily set in the jazz and improvisational realms as well as classical, blues, and rock. I recently received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from City College of New York with an emphasis in jazz and improvisation. I have been playing professional gigs for the last 8 years (in Denver as well as New York City) and have been teaching for the last three years, which I have come to find great passion for! My philosophy as a teacher is that every student is different and may require a unique approach. That is why I strive to really understand what direction the student wishes to go in, as well as their current skills. Also, to me, knowing the students’ likes and dislikes (not only in music but in life) is an important step to really connecting to them. I have been playing drums for about 8 years and have experience playing in rock, funk, and jazz groups. I also have 3 years experience teaching drums. I tend to stress rhythm and independence with the drums because to me these are the most beneficial concepts of the drums, and can be transferred to any instrument. Learning strong fundamentals and correct technique is crucial when learning drums. I have been playing saxophone for about 12 years now. I started playing jazz and learning how to improvise from the beginning. As I developed, I learned about my love of classical music and started studying classically in-depth. I attended Denver School of the Arts for high school, where I majored in music with a minor in jazz studies. I went on to study classical saxophone at Metropolitan State College of Denver and after the first year decided to take on bigger challenges. I moved to New York City to study saxophone with an emphasis on jazz at the City College of New York. While in New York, I began playing all types of professional jazz and rock gigs on saxophone. I eventually branched out and did a tour with a couple of salsa bands and began playing in a hip-hop group. This experience really opened my eyes to a lot of music styles and what concepts were common to all of them. I have now taken this knowledge and applied it to my teaching! *** Lesson Details *** Whether you are looking to lay the foundations for your future professional music career, or just to join a local pick-up band, school band, or amateur orchestra, we can make it happen! Studying with me will be a fun, challenging, engaging experience. I am very laid back, however I do expect my students to practice and take the music seriously. I tend to stress fundamentals in my lessons as well as fun. We will work on basics such as sound, intonation (sax), rhythm, scales (sax), rudiments (drums), learning songs, improvisation, performance techniques, and transcribing (depending on the level of the student). You can expect to see significant results studying with me, but only if you put in the effort. I am always available to take calls from my students if they have questions about their previous lesson. I am looking forward to building some great teacher-student relationships, and to sharing my knowledge and experience with my students. *** Studio Equipment *** Music room w/ piano, drums, keyboard, seating for parents *** Travel Equipment *** I can bring a music stand and the books if the student hasn't already purchased them. *** Specialties *** I specialize in Jazz, however I have studied classical saxophone extensively and have studied music theory for the last ten years.
