I love to teach- over 16 years of teaching piano and voice students, I know that music is one of the most fulfilling and joyful activities human beings engage in. I have helped many students, of all ages and abilities, to experience greater satisfaction from their practice and/or performance, and to experience an excited intellectual curiosity to learn more. I was originally a classical pianist, but in 1997 I began study of jazz arranging and piano. Following this, I spent 8 years as a touring musician in various bands, traveling mostly around the eastern half of the country. With the dream of writing orchestral music, I then returned to school at Jacobs School of Music (Indiana University) to study classical music composition. I got the opportunity to write for large ensembles there, and then became so interested in experimental music that I decided to come to Mills College, where I recently obtained a Masters of Fine Arts in Improvisation and Performance. Part of my professional experience includes working with individuals with Autism and other learning differences. I specialize in teaching students with Autism and Non-Verbal Learning Disorder. *** Lesson Details *** Piano students can choose either to focus on classical piano study, reading music, and some music theory, or they can choose to learn by ear, utilizing simplistic music theory. For little ones, I use method books such as Alfred piano books, chosen by their parents or guardians. Vocal students can choose to bring their own material to work on, or I will provide literature according to their taste. We will work on using breath support and proper embouchure to achieve each student’s best sound. Ear training and tuning exercises will be given, as well as flexibility and range exercises. Most importantly, we will keep things light and humorous. The point is to have fun while you learn! *** Studio Equipment *** Classroom w/ grand piano seating for parents or practice rooms with upright *** Specialties *** I specialize in teaching classical and improvised piano, basic jazz piano, songwriting, pop (rock, indie, folk, some classical and jazz) vocal performance, musicianship, and music theory.
