Alexandra (Alexa) Borden is a composer with a masters degree in Music Composition for the Screen (film, television, and video games). She has played piano since age 5 and has an extensive vocal and choral background. While studying music composition in undergrad at Berklee College of Music and Moravian College, she also studied music education and has experience teaching in and out of the classroom. Alexa encourages her students to choose the material they want to learn so that they are actively involved with deciding their musical path, while she acts as a guide and teaches technique through their choices. She finds this helps keep students engaged and having fun while they learn their desired style on any instrument, be it pop, classical, rock, folk, theater, etc. Alexa is available to teach composition (theory, film scoring, and tech), voice, piano, beginner's guitar, and more from her studio or online (check with her to see if she is available to teach at your home).

I began taking lessons for film music composition with Alexa in 2021. I was previously into songwriting but wanted to get into cinematic scoring. She’s taught me so much about reading a film, using Logic (my DAW) and plugins, mixing, and the composition process and how the industry works. It’s been like taking a college film composition class but without all the student debt! Her lessons and assignments are really helpful and I feel like I’ve genuinely grown as a composer to the point where I’m ready to start applying for film composition gigs.

Great teacher! Lesson plans are meticulously laid out in a way that never feels overwhelming. I had so many questions when I first started. Alexa was incredibly receptive and thoughtful in her answers in a way that didn't make me more confused than when I started. I definitely feel like I am much more capable of using the software required for my projects. That to me was the biggest hurdle and what we worked on the most. I never feel like if I'm not understanding a topic I'm going to be expected to catch up on my own-- everything is tailored to my speed. By far some of the best lessons I've had through the many instruments that I've learned.

Review was supposed to be about piano, although it wouldn't surprise me she knew origami as well!
