I taught guitar lessons for five years in the Peoria, Illinois, area. In that time I completed my Bachelor of Science in Music degree at Bradley University. My primary background is in pop/rock, contemporary Church music, and classical guitar. The latter was my focus at Bradley University. I also studied with a jazz guitarist in Peoria, so I incorporate jazz, blues, and other popular genres that feature guitar into my curriculum. I teach sight-reading of both traditional notation as well as chord charts. I emphasize both ear-training and music theory in my approach to guitar. I primarily teach children under 13, though I have worked with teenagers and adults as well. I enjoy working with all ages, especially at the beginner and intermediate levels. I encourage my students to take music and their practice time seriously while having fun and embracing their creativity.

Alex also taught piano lessons to our youngest daughter, Shelby starting at age 6. When she started playing piano, Shelby did not have a lot of confidence and was very nervous. Alex was able to quickly build a strong rapport with her and allowed her to greatly increase her confidence. Alex was also a very gifted piano player and was well-versed in techniques for developing a novice piano player. Shelby developed a strong love of playing the piano from Alex and continues her pursuit of mastering playing the piano today. We credit Alex with allowing Shelby to find her creative path through music.

Alex taught guitar to our oldest daughter, Madison, for 5 years. Alex was always very kind and patient in working with Madison while also expecting Madison to practice diligently and grow in her skills. Alex worked with Madison on lesson books, theory, and sight reading, and also allowed her to learn contemporary music that matched her interests. Alex's knowledge and abilities were always top notch, and he definitely earned Madison's respect for his teaching and guitar playing. Madison was very upset to lose Alex as her guitar mentor.

I would highly recommend Alex to anyone who wants to grow in their ability to play guitar. I took lessons from him before he moved to California almost five years ago and I am still impacted today with what I learned from him. Alex challenged me, stretched me, and filled me with encouragement along the way. Alex was more than simply a teacher; he believed in me more than I believed in myself, and called me to higher levels every time. You won't be disappointed if you spend time learning under Alex's training.
