Cindy K.

Mission Hills, CA

I work with beginners through intermediate students and focus on correctly holding the violin, positions, vertebrato , styles of music.

About Cindy

Hello, my name is Cindy and I am a vocal and instrumental instructor. I received my BA and MAT degrees from Pepperdine University. I have taught privately for over 25 years in the San Fernando Valley, along with Pasadena and Simi Valley areas. During college I performed in several operas including The Magic Flute and Hansel and Gretel with the Burbank Symphony Orchestra. After college, I was a member of Musical Americans, a select touring group from Southern California under the direction of K. Gene Simmonds that toured South America and Japan. I also served as a minister of music at a local church for several years. I began playing the piano at the age of 7. My mother and sister were taking lessons and, when they had finished practicing I would go into the piano and play what ...

She is able to teach many genres of music to all levels of musicianship, whether beginner or advanced, whether they want to learn Mozart or Coldplay, Aretha Franklin or Joni Mitchell . Having fun while honing the craft is the way to an enduring love of playing and is a principle she always uses in her lessons. Carmen has a special gift with very young children; she is able to keep children interested, engaged, inspired and challenged. She has a patience with children that is extraordinary because she ...

My son has been learning violin with Mr. Tigran since last 8 months. He started with very basic 8 months ago and last week his middle school won 12 trophies and he was at the center of the performance. Thanks to Mr. Tigran. Mr. Tigran has the ability to come to student level and bring a change. He is soft, polite and professional. My son is fully involved in violin now and looking towards next level. I am very pleased with his performance and looking forward that one day he will be playing like Mr. Tigran. During the last 8 months there were some occasions where my son was not able to meet the schedule appointment and Mr. Tigran was very accommodating with these situations. Mr. Tigran has the ability to relate music with daily life examples so kids can understand it better. A good communication is extremely important for a teacher and he posses this skill and knows how to apply it. I can see my son will grow very well with his music in future.

Unfortunately we were very disappointed with Tigran as a violin teacher. Clearly, Tigran plays instrument very well and capable of passing his knowledge, yet he is not passionate about teaching and not motivational for young kids. It appears that he is more concerned about making sure that he will receive a credit for growing a talent than performing actual day-to-day instructional work. Despite multiple requests, we, parents, couldn't convince Tigran to start making written lesson notes, to ensure addressing all his comments during homework. Also, in our opinion, Tigran's studio doesn't have adequate lighting which forced us to bring our own light for every lesson. Surprisingly, Tigran hasn't even made any attempts to address the issue from his end. Tigran's approach to teaching is rather formal with lack of personal touch and this is very sad to acknowledge. We felt that Tigran failed to establish good personal connection with student.
Last thing you want to hire violin teacher, who would invariably respond to your "How are you?" with "I am so tired"...

I really have loved taking lessons with Tigran N. I just began this year with him after completing a masters in music from a private college. I have learned so much already. I leave each lesson wanting to work harder and the best part is that he gives me great tips on exactly HOW to practice so I can get the most out of my practice time. It's been a great experience and I am so thankful for the way he challenges me and gives helpful criticism so that I can become a better violinist.

Brian B.

Sunland, CA

I majored in violin performance and studied with the best Russian violin teachers. I have had decades of professional playing experience on the violin.

About Brian

I studied music; violin performance, at the Peabody Conservatory of Music in Baltimore. I majored on violin and minored on piano. I then spent many years playing and performing professionally in many groups. I played in groups like the Los Angeles Baroque Orchestra and other modern music and classical groups. Since I also like to compose, I picked up many other styles and learned a few other instruments. I taught music for over twenty years, being active in the Music Teacher's Association and serving as string judge for the Certificate of Merit several years running. I teach with the principle that anyone can learn anything that is given in the right gradient and this is what really makes learning music enjoyable; not learning a lot of worthless shortcuts but being able to play well ...

I highly recommend Brian as a violin teacher. Brian has proven to be an excellent instructor, teacher and coach. He professionally and gently pointed out areas where I could make improvements, and showed me how to do it. He has great patience and a very effective way of communicating with me.
He is a violinist and a pianist and is expert at both which really enhances my lesson experience.

I had been taking lessons with another instructor on violin and found Luisa through one of her youtube videos. Because the other instructor wasn't really working out and I was having trouble understanding, I contacted her for lessons and it has worked out great. She has a lot of patience which has really helped with my self-consciousness. I would recommend her to students of all levels.

Ms. Lee is an excellent violin teacher! She taught my son for almost two years in Toronto. When she first came to our home, she went right to work asking about my son’s interests, background, and goals. He was at an intermediate level at the time. She was very articulate and meticulous about form and technique. Today, my son leads the 2nd violin section of his youth orchestra. He loves playing because of her and asks about her all the time.

You will not find a more dedicated violin teacher. My daughter Catherine (in high school at the time) studied with Ms. Lee for only a year and a half but improved dramatically. She received the highest marks possible at the annual Solo & Ensemble Festival. We miss you! – Mary & Cat
