Melissa J.

Orem, UT

About Melissa

I am dedicated to helping you to feel comfortable singing, performing and even auditioning. Teaching healthy techniques to free up your voice and give you the confidence to sing what you want.

I have recently finished a Master's of Music degree from Brigham Young University (BYU) in vocal performance. I have taught private and group voice lessons since 2011, and have developed effective ways of communicating to students. I am trained to help students get to know their voices and how to use them effectively.

I have performed major operatic roles for BYU, and am currently performing with t
he Utah Opera Chorus in Salt Lake City. I have performed in many venues and in front of hundreds of people. My background in performance allows me to teach my students necessary techniques to conquer stage fright and enjoy singing in front of people.

*** Lesson Details ***
My first priority is making the student feel comfortable, we will move only as fast as the student wants to move. We will start by setting some goals- what the student is hoping to get out of voice lessons. Be it "learn how to sing/speak better" or to prepare for up-coming auditions, I will keep your goals in mind when teaching.

Learning how to sing can be a slow process, but after 3-6 months of studying, you will be able to notice many improvements in your vocal tone, breath management, overall posture and self confidence. Remember that, with any type of study, the more consistently you practice, the more consistent your progress.

Students will be asked to find or purchase their own music (average of $10-$30). Please let me know if this is going to be an issue, there are sometimes free publications online that we can look into.

Also, if you do not find the time you were hoping for on my availability calendar go ahead and contact me, we can discuss the options!

Lastly, I do have cats. While I keep my studio space cleaned and dusted please be aware if you are concerned about allergies!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Piano, CD player, music stand, music reference books

*** Travel Equipment ***
When teaching out of my home I can provide a piano, music stand and CD player as well as books to reference. When teaching at student's home I would like them to provide a piano or keyboard. However, I can bring reference books, CD player, and a travelling keyboard if necessary. Students must buy or find their own music- I am happy to assist in finding the least expensive option.

*** Specialties ***
I believe that classical voice training is a solid foundation to build any voice style upon, from opera to musical theater and jazz. I work on techniques that fit the students goals and individual vocal needs as well as acting and performance techniques, including how to read and interpret music notation, audition preparation, and proper vocal care. My goal is to help the student gain confidence though singing and performing- any age, any style.

Fantastic teacher!

Melissa is wonderful! I was nervous to take lessons, and she made me feel comfortable. She is very friendly and very complimentary of what I am doing well, even if I'm doing other things poorly. I would recommend her to anyone, especially those who are shy about getting started.

Great Teacher! :)

Melissa is an amazing voice teacher! She always created a comfortable environment that we could learn about our individual voices in. She always told me exactly what I needed to improve on in a way that wasn't demeaning, but encouraging! I also attended an opera that she was in, and she was a great actress and singer! I really enjoyed her class and benefited a lot from it.

Zach H.

Spanish Fork, UT

About Zach

Music is my life, and actually find it sad whenever I hear someone say "music is just an ordinary, everyday thing, just like the car or the weather. I enjoy it, but I don't care to think it has special importance in my life." I don't think music is just another subject someone can study, it's a way of connecting to the world that you can share with others, or call your own. It brings a purpose into your life. We want to provide every possible avenue for an aspiring musician. With the wide variety of students and instruments, we can create an ensemble they can be a part of to play the music th
ey love.

Richard W.

Provo, UT

About Richard

My goal is to help students ENJOY the piano by finding ways to make it easier and doable. I have a very useful approach in helping students become self sufficient to sight read very well, to see patterns, understand music theory to either help them play well, or to even create their own music(I compose a lot of great music as well)

I couldn't sight read very well until I was 16, but I had a great sight reading teacher that showed me how to develop it, and now I can say that I'm one of the best sight readers out there that I know. I was a ballet pianist at Brigham Young University for
several years where all I did was sightread binders full of ballet/classical music. I play for choirs, church congregations, jazz bands, or musical jam sessions all the time, and I couldn't do that at all if I didn't learn how to sight read well. I would love to help you learn the piano, and I will do my best to make learning as effective as possible. I especially enjoy teaching those who quit and would like to try again, because I know what that is like.

Concerning my musical background, I've played, arranged, and composed piano for choirs, bands, jazz combos, singers. I've been in bands all my life, and have composed for jazz bands, choirs, and orchestras at BYU and in Eastern Europe. I also play about 10 different instruments, 5 being fairly basic, and 5 fairly proficient.

Kyle W.

Provo, UT

About Kyle

Hey! My name is Kyle. I'm a college student attending Brigham Young University in Provo. I love learning and getting to experience lots of different things! My favorite thing is music and for that reason I entered BYU as a music major originally, but I am now studying as a neuroscience major with the vision of becoming a surgeon later on (but music is still my #1 favorite hobby!). I lived for a couple years in Guadalajara, Mexico as a Christian missionary and so I'm also bilingual and very familiar with Mexican culture. I started working as a private tutor in September 2011 and I have had lots
of opportunities to work with youth while I've been in various leadership positions! I love teaching and I'm excited to get to know each of you!
