Melissa J.

Orem, UT

About Melissa

I am dedicated to helping you to feel comfortable singing, performing and even auditioning. Teaching healthy techniques to free up your voice and give you the confidence to sing what you want.

I have recently finished a Master's of Music degree from Brigham Young University (BYU) in vocal performance. I have taught private and group voice lessons since 2011, and have developed effective ways of communicating to students. I am trained to help students get to know their voices and how to use them effectively.

I have performed major operatic roles for BYU, and am currently performing with t
he Utah Opera Chorus in Salt Lake City. I have performed in many venues and in front of hundreds of people. My background in performance allows me to teach my students necessary techniques to conquer stage fright and enjoy singing in front of people.

*** Lesson Details ***
My first priority is making the student feel comfortable, we will move only as fast as the student wants to move. We will start by setting some goals- what the student is hoping to get out of voice lessons. Be it "learn how to sing/speak better" or to prepare for up-coming auditions, I will keep your goals in mind when teaching.

Learning how to sing can be a slow process, but after 3-6 months of studying, you will be able to notice many improvements in your vocal tone, breath management, overall posture and self confidence. Remember that, with any type of study, the more consistently you practice, the more consistent your progress.

Students will be asked to find or purchase their own music (average of $10-$30). Please let me know if this is going to be an issue, there are sometimes free publications online that we can look into.

Also, if you do not find the time you were hoping for on my availability calendar go ahead and contact me, we can discuss the options!

Lastly, I do have cats. While I keep my studio space cleaned and dusted please be aware if you are concerned about allergies!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Piano, CD player, music stand, music reference books

*** Travel Equipment ***
When teaching out of my home I can provide a piano, music stand and CD player as well as books to reference. When teaching at student's home I would like them to provide a piano or keyboard. However, I can bring reference books, CD player, and a travelling keyboard if necessary. Students must buy or find their own music- I am happy to assist in finding the least expensive option.

*** Specialties ***
I believe that classical voice training is a solid foundation to build any voice style upon, from opera to musical theater and jazz. I work on techniques that fit the students goals and individual vocal needs as well as acting and performance techniques, including how to read and interpret music notation, audition preparation, and proper vocal care. My goal is to help the student gain confidence though singing and performing- any age, any style.

Fantastic teacher!

Melissa is wonderful! I was nervous to take lessons, and she made me feel comfortable. She is very friendly and very complimentary of what I am doing well, even if I'm doing other things poorly. I would recommend her to anyone, especially those who are shy about getting started.

Great Teacher! :)

Melissa is an amazing voice teacher! She always created a comfortable environment that we could learn about our individual voices in. She always told me exactly what I needed to improve on in a way that wasn't demeaning, but encouraging! I also attended an opera that she was in, and she was a great actress and singer! I really enjoyed her class and benefited a lot from it.

Katie D.

Spanish Fork, UT

About Katie

At just 6 months old my mom discovered me humming “Silent Night”. By age 2, I would sit in the bathroom, holding aloft a Reader’s Digest from which I would “read” aloud, belting gibberish at the top of my lungs. Needless to say, my mother quickly enrolled me in the children’s performing group “Sunshine Generation”, since then its been 23 years of singing, dancing, acting, playing piano, playing guitar and playing the ukulele non-stop.

I love music and I love teaching! I have been studying the subject for decades now, two and half to be exact. First, in private lessons with wonderful teache
rs, then in Junior High, and High School. Then I entered the realms of college at Citrus, Riverside City College and my current educating grounds, Brigham Young University(Commercial Music Major). I am a music composer. I write music, lyrics, and score to Film/TV/promotional videos. I am currently on iTunes. I am loving and caring about the students I teach. I've had experience in teaching individual lessons to over 100+ students, singing with touring jazz orchestras, pop/rock groups and directing choirs.

Music is a lifestyle, and it is the lifestyle I love to live. If you want to learn your music skills, let me teach you! Im super fun and I will help you get to the next level! Thanks for reading this, I appreciate it. Don't you feel like you know me a little bit better?

*** Lesson Details ***
If you take lessons with me, you can expect progression! This takes top priority in my mind. It is very important for my students to know that I encourage keeping track of their progress on their chosen instruments. Setting goals and reaching them can be very satisfying! I recognize that every student has different skill levels and I will teach to the style that they best adapt to. One final note to add, they will be loved!

*** Specialties ***
Many genres excite me, however, I excel in Pop, Jazz, R&B, Classical, Country, Contemporary Christian, Broadway, and Singer/songwriter.

Richard W.

Provo, UT

About Richard

My goal is to help students ENJOY the piano by finding ways to make it easier and doable. I have a very useful approach in helping students become self sufficient to sight read very well, to see patterns, understand music theory to either help them play well, or to even create their own music(I compose a lot of great music as well)

I couldn't sight read very well until I was 16, but I had a great sight reading teacher that showed me how to develop it, and now I can say that I'm one of the best sight readers out there that I know. I was a ballet pianist at Brigham Young University for
several years where all I did was sightread binders full of ballet/classical music. I play for choirs, church congregations, jazz bands, or musical jam sessions all the time, and I couldn't do that at all if I didn't learn how to sight read well. I would love to help you learn the piano, and I will do my best to make learning as effective as possible. I especially enjoy teaching those who quit and would like to try again, because I know what that is like.

Concerning my musical background, I've played, arranged, and composed piano for choirs, bands, jazz combos, singers. I've been in bands all my life, and have composed for jazz bands, choirs, and orchestras at BYU and in Eastern Europe. I also play about 10 different instruments, 5 being fairly basic, and 5 fairly proficient.

Richard was great. Teaching a six year old that has never played before is challenging. He handled it great and she was playing Mary Had a Little Lamb ten minutes after the first lesson!

I had the opportunity last week to take a piano lesson from Richard. Growing up I took piano lessons, but never really practiced. I did the bare-minimum to get by, so that my teacher wouldn't be upset with me. After I stopped taking piano lessons, I lost a lot of my ability to play. I went to Richard hoping that he could help me grasp the basics again including: chords, major and minor positions, chord inversions, and a little about composing my own music. First off, Richard didn't make me feel stupid for not knowing how to play. He patiently explained concepts to me, and then showed me through examples. Then he let me practice and offered encouragement as I played. He also did a great job simplifying the teaching. It was very easy for me to follow and understand what he was teaching. I would highly recommend Richard to anyone who wants to either learn or improve their piano skills.

Henrik O.

Provo, UT

About Henrik

Hello my name is Henrik! I have been playing the saxophone ever since I first picked one up in grade school. I consider myself a goofy individual who takes my instrument very seriously. I have been teaching private students for about eight years. I am currently getting my degree in Saxophone Performance from BYU. I love it when my students learn to have fun while practicing and gain confidence in performing. No matter your schedule or location, I am determined to make a difference and help people improve. I have a flexible class schedule that allows you to pick a time that works best f
or you.

I find it most successful to prepare a lesson for each student before hand, rather than going over the same thing with every one of them. You can expect a well rounded range of exercises and practice techniques. From motif development, tune memorization and progressive patterns, to theory studies, music analyzation and playing along with the great recordings with the pros.
