I've been taking lessons with Eric since about the Spring of 2013 and have made huge progress in my playing ability since.
I started learning on my own through online lessons, but decided to take lessons with a private instructor after about 5-6 months when I decided I wanted to learn to play Jazz 'proper'.
Eric explains many of the written and unwritten 'rules' of Jazz and has helped my understanding of how to play enormously. I am still at a beginner stage, but I can see myself making good progress.
I went from knowing only basic open chords and some basic jazz chord voicings to learning heaps of new scales and chords to keep me busy and learn the basic building blocks of Jazz - learning how to comp, play melodies, improvise, and learn how to build chord-melody arrangements. Eric is well versed in many types of music and he can relate what we learn to many other styles as well. We cover musical concepts by playing them, hearing how they sound, and also covering what they are theoretically. His teaching method is very comprehensive and I enjoy that.
Eric puts a lot of new information in my lap at every lesson, which I always look forward to, but he is also very patient and understanding. He knows it takes time to be able to understand and execute everything properly. He is also very supportive during the week away from our lessons. He will send you extra info when you need it and will explain anything that needs clarification via email and is usually pretty quick to respond.
We go a little off tangent every once in awhile, but it's all in good fun.
Eric's a great teacher and I look forward to continuing lessons with him in the future."

just a word about the online experience. i'm definitely not tech savvy but online lessons were an easy experience for me. we've skyped, we've done face time. i can hear eric and the piano perfectly (no delay, etc. that's the part i was most concerned about). it all worked out great!
i'm not sure where else this journey might take me. i know eric writes, teaches piano, guitar, etc. i could see working with him in any of those areas and benefitting greatly from it. for now, i'll focus on one thing and encourage anyone who's thinking about taking lessons with eric to go for it. i really believe he has a gift for teaching and can truly help any willing student grow.
best of luck!"

I might add that my Grandson has Down Syndrome but that never stopped Matthew from being the Great Drum Instructor that he is complete with a rather relaxed, easy going but very professional teaching skill.
When my Grandson was at a MLB Game when presented with the spur-of-the-moment opportunity to play drums with some professionals, he had the confidence to just jump right in because of his experience with Matthew's drum lessons.
Thank you Matthew, we appreciate all you have done!"
