Annalise S.

Yucaipa, CA

About Annalise

I was born and raised in Yucaipa, CA and I have a Bachelor of Music in vocal performance from the University of Redlands. I have been performing for 12 years. Some of my favorite roles include Penny (Hairspray), Tessie Tura (Gypsy), The Baker's Wife (Into the Woods), Joy (Rogers and Hammerstein's Cinderella), Jenny (Company), Joanne (RENT), Jan (Grease), Milly (Seven Brides for Seven Brothers), Abigail Adams (1776), and Despina (Cosi Fan Tutte). I was artistic director for the University of Redlands Musical Theatre Company for two years and sang for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Arts Festival. I
am also an alumni of The American Theatre Wing's SpringboardNYC program.

"There is a vitality, a life force, a quickening that is translated through you into action and because there is only one of you in all time, this expression is unique.
And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and will be lost. The world will not have it. It is not your business to determine how good it is nor how valuable it is nor how it compares with other expressions. It is your business to keep it yours clearly and directly, to keep the channel open.
You do not even have to believe in yourself or your work. You have to keep open and aware directly to the urges that motivate you.
Keep the channel open. No artist is pleased. There is no satisfaction whatever at any time. There is only a queer, divine dissatisfaction, a blessed unrest that keeps us marching and makes us more alive."

-Martha Graham to Agnes de Mille

*** Lesson Details ***
As a teacher, I am very positive, patient, and I work hard to understand and cater to a student's taste in music, theatre, art, and information. I focus 50% of my performance lessons on physical and vocal warm-ups and 50% on the student's chosen repertoire. I believe in working towards a goal, so I always push my students to perform. I keep a calendar of auditions that I encourage my students to attend.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Private room with a baby grand piano, full length mirror, other various instruments, and a waiting room with comfy couches. I have two cats and a dog who never go in the music room, but I make no promises for the waiting area.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in dramatic, comedic, and musical theatre, opera, jazz, pop, drawing, writing/grammar, and reading comprehension.

Annalise has a very impressive background in music and education, and it really reflects through her lessons with my daughter. She has instilled a lot of confidence in my daughter, to the point that she tried out for, and made, Advanced Choir at her school. I very highly recommend Annalise!

Jessie M.

Pasadena, CA

About Jessie

Every student is a unique person who deserves a lesson customized to his or her individual needs. Each of my students prospers in an atmosphere of patience and encouragement. While the lessons are fun and enjoyable, the serious student will be supported in the development of skills leading to a rewarding career. And the more casual students will grow in an appreciation of music that will always enrich their lives.

As a music major I developed a deeper understanding of music theory, piano, voice, and theater. I received my A.A. in Music at College of the Desert and my Bachelor of Music degre
e at the University of Redlands- which I attended on a music scholarship. I have played leading roles in several operas and musicals in Southern California, including Gianni Schicchi, Die Fledermaus, La Boheme (DTL nominee), The Impresario, The Grand Duke, Patience (DTL award), Cosi fan tutte, Little Women the Musical, Seussical the Musical, and many more. I have also appeared in several concerts, opera scenes, competitions (winning music scholarships and theater awards), and worked as a singer at churches, restaurants, and in pop bands. I continue to perform and study music because performing is a part of who I am and I could never live without it.

With this experience under my belt, I feel a desire to pass on my knowledge to students. I carry a strong passion to help people develop their abilities and make them their own. I truly believe that if someone wants something out of life then they WILL achieve it with dedication, perseverance, confidence, and by having FUN doing it!

Sherry S.

Pasadena, CA

About Sherry

I have been a musician throughout my life; I began playing the piano at age 5, and then began studying the violin at age 10. I did my first Symphonic tour as a violinist throughout New Zealand and Australia when I was in high school, and eventually went on to college to earn my degree (BA in Biology) under full scholarship from the University Symphony as the 1st chair of the 2nd Violins.

After college, I studied voice informally at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. Later, I entered the Mae Z. Orvis Vocal Competition at the University of Hawaii and won a scholarship to enter a degree
program in Vocal Performance. I then trained with the Young Artists Program with the Hawaii Opera Theatre. I have been a professional singer since 1998, and have performed at the Wassermusik Festival in Berlin in 2008, the Hawaii Opera Theatre, the Seattle Symphony Benaroya Concert Hall in 2012 and LA's renowned Walt Disney Concert Hall in 2012.

I have acted in musical theatre in productions of "The King and I," "Romance, Romance," "Chicago," and "BatBoy," amongst others. I speak Mandarin Chinese and have wide-ranging cultural understanding, having studied language abroad in China and Taiwan and lived in Hong Kong, Honolulu, New Jersey, Chicago, San Francisco and LA.

*** Lesson Details ***
I teach both children and adults of all skill levels. I specialize in Classical singing/Opera, Broadway style singing, and also Karaoke singing/Microphone technique. I help people who are "tone-deaf" with pitch-matching, and to gain confidence singing in public.

I begin each voice and acting lesson with a warm-up to prepare the student for their lesson. Next, we do a series of exercises specially designed to help each individual develop their skill in a way that best fits them. We then work on a piece of their choice for the remainder of the lesson, perfecting their technique and helping them become performance ready. I teach with patience and fun because I feel that this is the key to achieving goals and inspiring a good habit of practice.

If you do not already have a song, or sheet music to bring in I can help you choose one during your first lesson. I also require that my students keep a practice journal to record their daily practice sessions. If possible, please bring a recording device of some sort so you can record your lessons. It is a huge help to be able to listen back on your lessons and to use them in your daily practice! No experience is necessary, that is what I'm here for!
