Kevin S.

Salt Lake City, UT

About Kevin

Experienced bassist available for eager students of all experience levels and ages! I started playing bass 10 years ago and have refused to put it down since. I structure my lessons so that students learn what they want to learn, while also building a strong musical foundation. I teach both electric and upright bass, focusing on rock, blues, funk, and jazz, but am also capable of teaching classical, latin, folk, country, and many other styles and genres. I utilize a number of texts in my lessons, including method books by Simandl, Ray Brown, and Rufus Reid, an etude collection by John Pattituc
ci, a latin method by Oscar Stagnaro, and many more. The following materials are available at my studio: amp, basses, cables, effect pedals, recording equipment, manuscript paper, and more.

I picked up the bass during high school, and performed in the school's jazz ensemble, guitar ensemble, orchestra, symphonic band, and percussion ensemble. Not only did these groups help me establish and develop my foundational skills on both bass guitar and upright bass, but also provided me with an understanding of the prevalence and diversity of the instruments' role in music. In 2011, I began studying music at the University of Utah, and graduated in December 2014 with a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Performance. During that time, I was able to study under the best musicians in Utah, exploring numerous areas of music, including theory, history, composition, recording, performance technique, and many more. It was during this time that I established my private studio, as well as began teaching at the Granger School of Music in Park City, where I also help develop music courses for high school credit.

I have had the pleasure of playing in many different bands and ensembles for over 10 years. During this time, I have played throughout Utah and surrounding states, embarked on a handful of tours, appeared on TV and radio, and participated in multiple recording projects. Recent projects include Hot House West, Crook & The Bluff, and Charles Ellsworth.

My 8 year old daughter has been taking lessons with Kevin for almost a year. She likes that the lessons are fun, Kevin taught her the Super Mario Brothers theme song, and I like that she is being challenged while also developing an appreciation for all types of music. Even though my daughter is taking guitar lessons, Kevin occasionally incorporates other instruments (piano, mandolin, ukulele) into her lessons. We both love this! Kevin is always on time and comes to each lesson with a planned agenda. He is also great to work with when rescheduling. We hope to continue our lessons with Kevin! He is awesome!

Kevin Schultz is an extremely qualified teacher of many instruments. I have taken Mandolin and Piano from him and is able to match his instruction to my way of learning. I have seen him perform with his band Electric Cathedral as well and was
amazed at their talent.
I would highly recommend lessons from Kevin Schultz.

I have been taking bass guitar lessons from Kevin for over six months now. He was able to teach me the fundamentals of music in a way that allowed me to progress with an understanding of how music works and how it works specifically in playing the bass. I have reached the point where I can start applying that understanding to the playing of songs in context. It makes a huge difference. Highly recommended.

About Brian

I have been teaching for 17 yrs. and playing for 36 yrs. I absolutely love to watch the learning process take shape. I get a great deal of joy from teaching and witnessing students pass and achieve greatness. When they overcome what seem like insurmountable odds to them and then perform something flawlessly, especially in a live setting, It just does not get any better than this. I cannot imagine doing anything else with my time. I have a strong ability to connect with each individual student and create a personal lesson plan for each and every unique personality. Depending on the person, I wi
ll personally tailor a lesson plan for that individual based on their natural ability, coordination skills, mindset, musicality and overall rhythmic sense. I also try to give each and every student the confidence needed to get up in front of an audience or crowd of people and still perform with elegance and dignity. Just relax and play. That is what it is all about, right, having fun. Let's play.

Nicolle A.

Sandy, UT

About Nicolle

At the age of 3, I began playing the violin and was taught through the Suzuki Method. Before ever learning to read a note, I learned to play by ear- learning to listen and imitate, much as a child learns to imitate sounds and speak before learning the letters of the alphabet. This ear training, in combination with note reading and other techniques, created the groundwork for the rest of my life as a musician!

The moment that would change my life as a musician came at age 12 while performing with Disney's Young Musicians Symphony Orchestra in Chicago. We had the opportunity to perform wit
h violinist Vanessa Mae. I had never seen someone that could inspire so much electric energy and, at the same time, put such tender, heartfelt emotion into every note. A new fire and zeal for music was born in me that I can never forget!

That passion for music has driven me to reach for every performance and training opportunity possible and to help others do the same. In completing my bachelor's degree in Viola Performance at the Jacob's School of Music at Indiana University, I brushed shoulders with mentors who not only shaped me as a performing musician but also as a teacher. Participating in the Suzuki Pedagogy program provided the ultimate hands-on opportunity to teach, alongside other professionals, and mold beginning violinists in their first steps.

I have been teaching privately for the past 10 years, helping beginning through advanced students ranging in age from 4 to 52. It's been unbelievably rewarding watching each student's life change with music. My young beginners love the creative outlet that playing the violin and viola provides. The discipline they develop in learning to play crosses musical boundaries and can be seen in their schoolwork and other daily routines. My adult students love the opportunity to begin the musical journey they had only dreamed of in the past; or, the chance to "dust off" their instruments that they put by the wayside as a child. Equally rewarding is teaching those students with fundamentals already in place to stretch and turn their technique into expressive, musical lines!

I love the opportunity to get to know the unique personalities and styles of EACH of my students and to help them put this qualities into their playing! Let me help you discover the musician waiting to come out in you!...

*** Lesson Details ***
I teach 30 minute, 45 minute, and 1 hour lessons. (For students younger than 8 years of age, 30 minute or 45 minute lessons are recommended.) Each of my lessons is taught one-on-one in my in-home studio.

I teach a combination of the Suzuki Method and traditional styles. The Suzuki Method creates a strong technical foundation to build upon while also training the ear to work independently of note reading. I combine this method with a more traditional approach as I feel it important for the student's involvement and enjoyment to play recognizable tunes.

What to expect in a lesson:

Beginners:
- Learning to correctly hold the violin/viola and bow with proper position
- Learning the names of notes and placement of fingers
- Note and rhythm training/reading; key and time signature training
- Ear training
- Beginning level Suzuki and traditional pieces

Intermediate:
- Ensuring that proper positioning and posture is upheld
- Scale and rhythm training; key and time signature training
- Ear training
- Intermediate level Suzuki and traditional pieces
- Learning shifting exercises and vibrato

Advanced:
- Scale and rhythm training exercises/etudes
- Ear training
- Advanced level Suzuki pieces and/or traditional and other classical pieces

For the first lesson:

Beginners: Please bring your violin (appropriate for your size), bow, shoulder rest, Suzuki Volume 1 with CD, notepad, and folder.

Intermediate-Advanced: Please bring your violin, bow, shoulder rest, notepad, folder, and your most recently performed/polished piece.

Parental involvement in younger students' lessons and at-home practicing is HIGHLY encouraged! (For those students 8 years of age or younger, parents are REQUIRED to be at every lesson!)

*** Studio Equipment ***
Piano, Violin/Viola (for teacher use), music stand, metronome, recording device, laptop
