She received her AA in Professional Music from SWCC, school for music vocations, then got her BA in Jazz Studies, Vocal Performance at CSU Sacramento. Sh
e is currently working on her Masters in Jazz Studies, Vocal Performance at the Bob Cole Conservatory inside of CSU Long Beach. While studying she is the Graduate Assistant for Christine Guter, and directs the 2nd vocal jazz ensemble, Jazz and Tonic, at the school.

*** Lesson Details ***
My teaching philosophy is to have a safe, positive, fun, and effective learning environment for all of my students. I believe it is important to be a well rounded musician, therefore I love my students to have a solid understanding of what they are doing. I strongly encourage all of my students to learn theory along with piano or voice, so they understand what they are doing. Each student is unique, therefore each student has a different lesson plan. I do expect that my students will practice during the week in order to grow, since this helps them reach their goals. I do let students pick some of their own repertoire, since it is very important for them to be motivated during the week. I can teach from early Baroque music to modern day and everything in between. Music is expression, therefore I believe it is very important for my students to love what they are working on.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Lessons in my apartment with a keyboard.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can bring a keyboard, but it would be easier if they had one.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in jazz voice, with a strong background in classical and musical theatre. I also specialize in piano, music theory, songwriting and arranging.

Glynis teaches both voice and piano to my 12-year-old son. She makes both subjects fun and finds a wonderful blend of theory (which we believe is very important) and practical application. She is helping him build strong technique, and helping him navigate the tough transition years for boys who sing as their voices change. We love her and have already successfully recommended her to friends, who are also really enjoying her teaching!

Glynis is a wonderful piano teacher! Our son has been taking lessons with her for about 5 months, and he has learned so much in such a short period of time. She makes the lessons fun, is engaging and patient, and able to keep a 7 year old focused, which is a feat in itself! After a bad experience trying group lessons, our son loves piano and looks forward to his lesson with Glynis each week.

Glynis was awesome. DJ was very comfortable with her and they worked on both voice and piano during the hour. He thought she was fun and I was very impressed with the emphasis on warmups, proper breathing techniques, basic finger position in piano and theory work. She covered it all, and still made sure DJ felt listened to and had fun. He is already looking forward to the next lesson.

Sarah is very patient with my daughter. She tailors the class to her personality. She gets her to do the class in a fun way. She makes the class enjoyable but still focuses on her growth. She pushes Alexa enough to keep her going. She motivates her to learn. My daughter looks forward to her lessons. Recommend!

Last year, I had the opportunity to study with Christian at CSU Northridge. Christian is one of the finest musicians I have come across in the years that I have been playing music. Not only does he have impressive skills with the guitar, he also has knowledge in the history of the guitar and music theory. When he was studying at CSUN, I was able to have some lessons with Christian on a baroque piece that was giving me trouble. First, I'd like to mention how patient he was with me when I was frustrated and lost in the music. Also, I was surprised at how much he knew about the music as he explained what was going on in the piece and why. Oh... did I mention that I had some AWESOME results after ONE lesson??? Do yourself the favor and check this guy out!

Christian has been teaching our two sons (Age 11 and 8) for the summer and has performed wonderfully as both instructor and motivator. His demeanor is excellent with the kids. And I greatly appreciate that he is teaching them music reading, music appreciation and music theory -- not just how to play the guitar. More importantly, the kids are having a great time.

Joseph R.

Downey, CA

About Joseph

Joseph R. has 5 years of experience teaching students elementary, middle school-aged children and adults on to how to play keyboard, guitar, flute and saxophone while sharing his learning experience with them as a self-taught saxophone and flute player and his more conventional education on piano and guitar.

Joe started developing his musical talent through piano lessons at the age of 7. After only a year of formal study, he began to experiment with other instruments such as the bamboo flute, the guitar and the drums. When he moved to the United States at the age of 13, he was introduced to
the school’s band where he chose to hone his skills with the flute. Since then, he has been exposed to classical and symphonic repertoire. During high school, he joined the marching band and at the same time, found interest in jazz and alto saxophone. He decided to pursue a career in music by majoring in Jazz Studies and Performance at the University of California in Irvine where he has received his Bachelors degree in Music. He is currently performing at local jazz clubs, formal events and concerts. He would like to continue to inspire his students while nurturing his passion.
