David C. Fords, NJ

About David

I grew up in a musical home, my father was a rock and roll and soul session drummer throughout the '60's and '70's in New York. I picked up the guitar at 11 years old and started taking lessons. After studying classical and jazz throughout high school I attended William Paterson University from 1994 - 1997, majoring in Music Education and studying with jazz guitar guru Vic Juris and classical guitarist Rich Jacobowski. And the later at CCNY with Ornette Coleman alum Kenny Wessel. In 1997, I moved to Brooklyn and cut my teeth in the NYC R&B and rock club scene playing in the band Sole Pocket, and with various jazz combos at many other clubs including the Blue Note and the Knitting Factory. In 2003 I returned to college at CCNY (city college of New York), majoring in Jazz Performance and

5 yr old guitar lessons

David has been excellent with my 5 year old. He is extremely patient, fun, and friendly and is teaching her how to play the guitar. i am amazed. I didn't think it was even possible for her to learn as much as she has. i would highly recommend David to teach any child music.

Dave is a very enthusiastic teacher with good theoretical knowledge on the piano. His practical knowledge is OK. Dave is very good with letting the student determine his goals and then he tailors his lessons around those goals. This makes the lessons more enjoyable. The only suggestion I would have is that he should have the sheet music written in advance for that day's lesson. He had the music written in advance on our last lesson but for one or two previous ones, he was writing the music during the lesson which took time away from the lesson. Overall, I was very happy with Dave and would recommend him.
Dominic M. Middlesex, NJ

About Dominic

Dominic M., America’s Tenor, has been singing in one form or another since the age of four. As a young man, Dominic began honing his skills of singing and acting through Community Theater. His voice and career were forever changed when vocal coach and mentor, Suzanne Ferris-Hammer introduced him to the great voice of Mario Lanza. From the moment Dominic heard the voice of Mario Lanza, he began to fashion his own voice in that image. Dominic continued to expand his career by developing his own show, which includes the songs of Mario Lanza in their original keys. These shows were held in some of the finest NYC Cabarets such as Don’t Tell Mama, Duplex Café, Danny’s Skylight Café, Café 44, and Eighty Eights. Great learning experience

I took flute lessons from Hilary at NYU after several years of not playing at all. I was rusty and had accumulated quite a few bad habits, from poor posture to improper breathing. Starting out, part of my difficulty was in forgetting these habits and starting anew. Not only was Hilary very patient with me, but she also taught useful techniques along the way.

I also had a weak foundation in basic music theory, and Hilary's review lessons were incredibly helpful -- I found myself looking at sheet music and playing scales with a completely different mindset. I can honestly say that I improved significantly (and now I even find myself checking my posture when I'm not playing!). After having taken such a long break, I wasn't sure whether I'd want to start playing again. Hilary's lessons and supportive attitude helped renew my interest and for that I'll always be grateful!

Hilary is an amazing teacher

Hilary is an amazing teacher with a ton of knowledge about flute performance. During my time with her, my playing and musicality improved drastically. She has a lot of flute-playing metaphors up her sleeve that make it easy to understand more complicated techniques.

I would absolutely recommend her as a teacher.

As fun as she is professional!

I took flute lessons with Hilary during my senior year at NYU. I had never played flute before in my life, but I had gotten one as a gift and decided I might as well try and learn. I was very lucky to have chosen Hilary as my teacher!

I had taken music lessons in varying instruments every single semester while at NYU, and Hilary was easily the most memorable and enjoyable teacher I had. While most of my music teachers made our lessons seem like another class, Hilary's passion, excitement, and humor made learning the flute a fun adventure that I looked forward to each week.

In our first lesson, she was able to show me exercises and techniques that got me further in my flute playing than months of trying to teach myself online. In just a few weeks, I knew more than I was expecting to by the end of the whole semester, and I was rewarded by being able to play short but beautiful flute music.

If there was ever a time when I was having trouble with a particular concept or technique, Hilary was always able to either clarify it for me, or explain it in an alternate way until I got it. If I ever had any questions - and I had a lot of them - she was always able to answer them.

I not only learned a lot about the flute, but I had fun while doing it, which for me is the best way to learn an instrument. If you are considering taking flute lessons, I highly recommend you take them with Hilary!
Inbal B. Princeton, NJ

About Inbal

Hello. my name is Inbal and I am very happy to introduce my self, hoping we get the chance to work together. I am a musician. For many years I teach piano and music theory. I enjoy it very much:) I love to share my knowledge. Like the Sages said, the good teacher is he who studies from his students, so I always try to learn something from my students. I've graduated the high academy for music in Jerusalem in 2010. I've also graduated MA in musicology at the Hebrew university in 2012. Beside playing classic music I love to improvise and sing, accompany myself and jam with other musicians. My approach to teaching piano is that the piano is first of all the student's friend, and not just an instrument we try to master. From my experience, I find that every student is special and

My son started learning piano with Inbal in June this year. Since then he progressed to learning how to recognize notes, playing simple songs and even composing his own songs. I like to see my active 7-year old actually sitting down and engaging in musical activity. I have to agree with the other reviewers that Inbal is very nice teacher and very patient with children. I highly recommend Inbal to anybody interested in taking piano lessons.

Inbal came to our home to teach our 7 and 9 year old boys. She was always reliable, consistent and very patient. She is so nice and perfect for teaching children. She sought out piano songs they would enjoy learning. Inbal would also send them video clips from the internet to engage them in interesting songs and expose them to multiple instruments. She's a gem.
Carla U. Somerset, NJ

About Carla

Music is my LIFE! After 24 years of teaching at music camps, music stores, 3 colleges and my home, I completely understand that the lessons are all about YOU, the student: what you want to learn, taught to you in a way that works for your brain and personality. And if you don't know exactly what you want to learn, that's OK. We can figure that out together as we go along learning the basics. I help students learn to play songs by artists they like. I also help students write songs, or put chords to their existing lyrics. For those who are interested, I teach note-reading (not required) and theory (not required) and ear training (not required). The lessons are always tailored towards your (the student's) goals. I also teach classical and fingerstyle guitar for the ...

It has been great having Carla as my guitar teacher. Although I have taken lessons from two other teachers, I have found Carla's teaching methodology to be the best as she teaches you those most important basics that sometimes get passed over by other teachers.
As I am an adult student, life sometimes gets in the way of my practicing, but Carla is understanding of this and consistently provides that ever important encouragement and positive reinforcement for whatever progress I have made.
Aside from her musical talents, Carla is very personable, down to earth, with an excellent sense of humor that she incorporates in her teaching style.
I highly recommend Carla as a teacher.

A friend and I talked about learning to play the guitar. This friend gave me a gift of my first lesson three months ago, and I've already learned a lot more than I ever expected in such a short time. Jimmy is such a knowledgeable teacher, and a very patient guy, There have been several times when I've asked him to review something he's taught me. He explains things clearly and in a respectful way, never making me feel inadequate. I am learning so much about music theory and why he is teaching me what he's teaching, and that helps things make more sense. (Well, most things! Haha!) I highly recommend Jimmy as a teacher and thank my friend Tim for such a great gift.

Over the past 2 months, I’ve found Jimmy to be a phenomenal teacher. While I’ve spent my whole life experimenting with my voice, what I’ve learned in these past months has completely transformed both how I understand singing and my voice itself. No doubt, I still have a long way to go, but over this short period of time, I really cannot believe how much Jimmy has already helped me tap into a fullness and range I never thought my voice had.

I think what’s best about Jimmy is he fully understands what it takes to become a good singer, and how to fully find one’s singing voice. I will admit, the exercises Jimmy has you perform seem a bit odd at first, but it’s all part of the learning process to understand the mechanics of how to sing properly. Like all things worthwhile, results don’t happen overnight (although a couple months isn’t too shabby), but I can promise that if you study with Jimmy, you will have a teacher who has walked the path, knows it backwards and forwards, and will be able to help train you to sing fuller, healthier, and typically with more range. Furthermore, Jimmy tailors your lessons to your genre of choice!

Sounds like a pretty good deal to me.
