I took drum lessons from Jon U. for a little over a year, and loved it. The only reason our lessons stopped is because he moved.

On our first day, Jon's first question to me was, "What do you hope to learn from me and these lessons?" I couldn't read music and I had no rhythm, and that's all I hoped to learn. I was in my forties, and wanted this to be a hobby; it was never going to be anymore than that, but Jon didn't treat this as boring or a waste of his time.

Jon was patient, professional, fun. And he was a *teacher.* Each time I mastered an assignment, he'd write me a more difficult one, and I learned more about music and became a better player than I ever thought I would.

Jon isn't just qualified to teach the mechanics. He has a Ph.D., and my favorite part of our lessons was simply discussing what's "behind" the playing: the theory behind it; what it means; viewing and contemplating what music is and what it means to us. How it changes us.

Good musicians don't always make the best instructors, but Jon U. is one of the rare ones. I can't recommend him highly enough.

I took lessons with Jonathan for about 2 years. I had never played the drums before and he did a great job of teaching me. His teaching style is great. He manages to make the dry stuff fun and keep your attention, and he is very willing to change up his plans to help you get to your goals.

The atmosphere during lessons is great as well. Taking lessons with Jon is very comfortable and relaxing, so it becomes very easy to open up and really get into the drumming.

Couldn't recommend lessons with him any more.

Providence, RI

A thorough understanding of bass notation, scale and chordal theory. rhythmic articulation.

About robert

I have been playing guitar since the age of 8. (1965) I have taught music (guitar, bass, keyboard and percussion) at many music stores throughout the years; mostly in Connecticut and Rhode Island, but also in NYC and Europe. I studied guitar formally as a child with Dominic Santucci from the New Haven area, and as an adult in NYC with Remo Palmier. I was recipient of a Bonnie Raitt grant to teach 'at-risk' youth at Boys and Girls Clubs of Rhode Island and served as both k-8 music instructor and bell-choir master for St.Stanislaus School / Hartford Diocese. Over the years I have taught over
1000 individuals to read music and play the guitar.
