Barbara M.

Virginia Beach, VA

Experienced in vocal performance.

About Barbara

Music has been an integral part of my world, playing a major role in both my personal and professional life. I embrace the chance to be immersed in it, to share my enthusiasm for and expertise in the area of the music education experience, promoting creative development and student performance skills.

I am an original New Yorker, but have lived in Virginia Beach for the past 12 years. I began studying piano at the age of 8 and have not stopped playing since. It is a gift and a joy to be able to share my love of music performance with people of all ages and abilities. I have also sung in man
y choirs in addition to performing professionally on the piano and the guitar, both as a soloist and ensemble member.

I rejoice in the success that I see in my students as they learn and gain appreciation for the gift of music. They become more and more eager to share and more and more open to the possibilities ahead.

*** Lesson Details ***
I listen well to my students. They are free and encouraged to express their goals and soon, they become more and more comfortable doing so. They begin to understand that even though I am their instructor, we are working as a team and that my goals for them are directly tied to the goals they have set for themselves.

My teaching style is natural, relaxed and yet, very enthusiastic, all at the same time. I have patience in abundance and my continual student affirmation is well received. I give most attention to personalizing instruction for each of my students. My passion for musical expression is contagious and readily shared. It is a joy to teach music, to contribute to the growth and delight that I witness through a student's progress.

I have taught music to both children and adults, from beginner to advanced levels. My teaching approach remains the same, save for the goals that suit the specific student, which we discover early on, sometimes even at the first session, together, right from the start. My beginning students receive the attention necessary to encourage their desire to persevere, which includes positive feedback (which is abundant) and a teaching style that fits his/her level of learning. My student's success is my goal. This is my jubilant mission.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Piano, guitars, mini-amp.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I own 4 guitars, 1 classical, 2 acoustic/electric, and 1 electric, which I can provide for the lesson, if necessary.
I own a Baldwin Acrasonic piano.

The students will need to buy their books.

*** Specialties ***
Methods: Clear presentation of the instrument and the most comfortable way to achieve the best playing results. Emphasis on Theory including chords and improvisation.

Styles: From Classical to Broadway to Folk to Rock to Jazz to Blues.
Genres: All

I had a musical background growing up. I played the piano and the cello for years and sang in several choirs. I also took piano lessons for a number of years as a young adult - but, when I came to Barbara, I hadn't touched a musical instrument for at least 3 decades. For me, what makes Barbara extraordinary as a teacher is that, even with all the musical background I have, she brings out music in me that I never knew was there - and we laugh a lot too - you can't do better than that!

I would like to write a follow up review about Ms. Barbara.

I have been taking singing lessons for about 5 months with Ms. Barbara.
When I came to Ms. Barbara I had a few hurdles I needed help and assistance in. The end goal was to be able to have my performance on stage. Ms. Barbara composed the right vocal exercises for me to practice so my voice becomes stronger and more stable, that the breath taking is correct and will allow me to hold the notes i need better and even sing high notes.

I went on stage feeling happy, excited and confident. My performance was a success!
Thank You Ms. Barbara!!

About Cara

Hi there! My name is Cara Isadora McKinney. I am an award winning vocalist and experienced performer who loves to teach singing. My goal is to demystify vocal technique for students and help them “find their voice" pretty quickly with patience and care in a safe and friendly environment. I am currently available to teach lessons at my
studio, at your home, and online.

My credentials and affiliations include a Bachelor's in Vocal Music from Lamar University, Hurrah Players, Governor's School for the Arts, and VA Opera. I specialize in opera and musical theater. I also record and perform pop, rock, R&B, and jazz. Trained by some of the best artists and teachers in Virginia and Texas, I have gained extensive knowledge in vocal pedagogy that has allowed me to become versed in numerous styles and crossover genres. Cara is a library of information and tools to help you learn how to sing. She encourages her students to practice and learn proper form. With her help I've found my voice and am encouraged to continue perfecting it. She also helped me with some bad habits that I had picked up but now know better. I highly recommend Cara and she is a true professional with a beautiful voice who knows how to teach!

I only had one lesson with Cara but she was very experienced and did her best to bring out the singer in me. She found songs that would suit me and she put a lot of effort into making that first lesson as valuable to me as it could be. I really felt like she cared deeply about my progress which meant a lot to me.

Rachel G.

Hampton, VA

I have a degree in music performance (violin) from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where I also studied vocally, as well as vocal pedagogy. I also studied with Kimi Yokoyama, who has sung with the Lyric Opera of Kansas City, the Civic Opera of Kansas City, and the Kansas City Metro Opera. I also sing with the internationally touring Celtic group, Tullamore. My teaching style is flexible, relaxed and fun, and I have worked with all levels of vocal students, including learning to find your first notes. Call TakeLessons, and we will set up your lesson!

About Rachel

Hi, there! My name is Rachel, and I can't wait to meet you! I've been teaching private lessons since 2002, and have loved helping my students learn to read and play, discover their own love of music, and conquer their fears of performing (so much "proud mama bear" happening!). In 2003, I earned my violin performance degree at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where I also studied piano and vocal pedagogy. I'm an encouraging and fun person to work with (if I may say so myself!), and my teaching style is fun, positive, and relaxed. I have worked with many students, including some with learnin
g disabilities, physical limitations, PTSD, and just plain ol' stage fright! I work with you to set your own goals, and I look forward to helping you reach them... It's what I love about what I do.

Pat is a fantastic instructor. For someone like me who has a very busy schedule, he is always flexible on when we meet, how the pay is handled, and which direction I want to take the instruction. Because he is so diversified in his musical knowledge, he can instruct you not only HOW the music is played, but also WHY it is played the way it is, which in my opinion is far more important.

Less important from the instructor perspective but is something I highly value in any teacher, is that he is very well mannered and easy to talk to. This makes the piano lessons low stress, and fun.
