I have wanted to work with Jan since I saw her as a judge at the LAMN JAM Music Contests, her feedback to the artists was always spot on and I wanted to hear what she might have to say about my work and her suggestions. I have been lucky enough to have taken lessons and workshops with Jan for a couple months now and it has definitely had a big impact on my confidence as well as making me aware of what I need to work on. It is great to put yourself in a situation where a professional will be honest with you and help give you the tools to better your performance, this is exactly what I get out of working with Jan. You can sing out as much as you want, but listeners, friends and family usually just tell you how great you are and its hard to grow that way. Jan is kind but straightforward on what you need to do to better yourself as a performer. I highly recommend studying with Jan!

I love to sing it´s just fun for me and it makes me happy. But I´m not a singer and don´t even want to go up on stage. I´m trying to be a songwriter and I was just visiting a workshop at the songwriting school of LA. And on this evening I met Jan the first time. At the moment I´m travelling and I never thought that I would stay in one city that long. But at this evening when Jan made this workshop I swear you guys, I hadn´t laugh that much for a long time. When she asked me if I´d like to come to the class I just had to say yes. It was a heart decision and I don´t regret it! This woman is a very talented singing teacher and also songwriter with a lot of experience, for sure. But she´s much more than that because you can have a REALLY bad week or day, but the second you walk into that class this woman saves your day! She´s just so funny! Every week I´m looking forward to that day. Of course the most people only want to learn how to sing or to perform but I think it´s also important to feel comfortable and accepted. And she gives everyone the feeling of being accepted and she takes care of every student. And just to be clear, of course it´s not all about fun and of course you´ll learn A LOT. I just want to say that you´ll be enjoying it to learn from her ;) Thank you Jan

I had the pleasure of attending Jan's "Acting for Singer/Songwriters" class at The Songwriting School of Los Angeles. A door opened for me. I became more courageous. It was a process. And I am forever grateful to Jan for helping me uncover more of my soul's voice.

Technique lays the ground work for proficiency in any instrument. The voice is no different. I teach breathing, placement, ear training and harmony. That said, I focus my coaching on the power of authentic story telling using movement and acting exercises to build artistic skill.

About Toni

Just a couple of seasons ago one of my amazing students, Juliana Chahayed made top 40 on American Idol! 2 of my students recently made it through two rounds of The Voice. 12 of my students sang on the Grammy Award nominated "Hurry Up, We're Dreaming" by M83. My students have also gotten into top music programs at Berklee College of Music, NYU, USC, Brandeis and Cal State University Northridge; won 1st prize in the high school talent show and money prizes in community singing contests. My singers have sung the Star Spangle Banner at Staples Center for a Clipper's game and produced success
ful showcases in the LA area. My story starts a while back: As a singer/songwriter my experiences singing live from Bud Friedman's Improv to the Disneyland Hotel and in studios all across Los Angeles eventually took me to Europe where I landed in Brussels and recorded an album for Sony Records/Belgium which produced three radio hits in the 90's. I also recorded and/or wrote jingles for Coca Cola, Fanta, Schwepes, Fisher Price and more! Fluent in French, when I moved back to the states I taught at Lycee International de Los Angeles for 12 years where I developed a music program for their 4 campuses, teaching K through 12, including commendations from everyone from French President Sarkozy to Los Angeles Councilman Tom LeBonge. I've recorded 6 children's CD's and recently directed and arranged background vocals for renown French singer and actress Charlotte Gainsbourg. In my private practice I have prepared and developed singers for live performance, personal development and for the rigors of the auditioning process. And we always have fun!!

*** Lesson Details ***
Learn to play the voice! How do you want to tell your story? My lessons will help you build confidence and every lesson will bring you a new piece of understanding and practical know-how. You will work hard, play hard, build a repertoire, and make tangible improvements in every single lesson! Success breeds success. If you want to audition for The Voice or simply enjoy the applause at karaoke night, I can bring you closer to your goal. I can also include beginning piano which can only add to your skills including an understanding of music vocabulary and the basic mechanics of music theory.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Music Room, and recording studio, piano, guitars, computer and cd, ipod docs. Parents are welcome to stay for lessons or run to close-by Starbucks, Costco or Home Depot!

*** Travel Equipment ***
I use a piano to teach both voice and beginning piano.

*** Specialties ***
I use solfege, breathing and placement techniques filtered through an emphasis on real world performance skills. Helping the student build confidence is probably one of the teachers' most important roles. Creating a safe environment is key to keeping the lesson fun, productive and challenging. Every single student should leave every single lesson with a tangible feeling of progress.

We have been absolutely thrilled with the results that we've seen in our two boys' abilities since working with Toni for the past year and a half. They are both in their high school's show choir and we couldn't be happier with this year's accomplishments. Our freshman earned major solos in his group's competition set and has also earned a spot in next year's Advanced Show Choir group which mostly consists of seniors. As far as our senior son, Toni helped him with his confidence in his singing ability, and helped him secure a solo in his final show choir performance. He also joined a band with his friends and was more than thrilled to be selected as the front man.
We asked our boys if they wanted to take a break for the summer, they both said "No" and that they wanted to continue with Toni throughout their summer vacation.
Thank you Toni - you're simply the best!

Toni is the single most amazing teacher and person I have ever had the pleasure of coming across. In the months that I have been taking lessons, not only has my singing improved, but also my confidence. She made me realize that the voice is an instrument and is teaching me exactly how to use it. If you want to improve and learn all while having the pleasure of being with an amazing person, then Toni is perfect for you. She definitely is perfect for me and all her other students!

I am a classically trained singer, with experience singing solo, in choirs, and in professional opera companies. Within the first few lessons, you'll learn the fundamentals of vocal technique and as time goes on you'll be performance ready. I specialize in teaching healthy vocal technique, applicable to all styles of singing, from pop to Broadway to opera. Come discover your voice!

About Sheila

I have earned a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from the University of Redlands. As a professional singer, I have performed in numerous concerts and operas. I've sung in both choral and solo settings, as well as fully staged productions. Throughout my education, I have played piano and even participated in Certificate of Merit testing. These experiences have all helped shape me into a well rounded singer.

In lessons, I devote equal amounts of time to technique and repertoire. We will always begin by warming up, and working on some exercises. Then we will implement your new tec
hniques into your repertoire, which I will tailor to your specific needs and wants.

Above all, though, I want to help you realize your dreams as a musician! Looking forward to getting started!

As you play your pieces, we will also explore the fundamental concepts of music theory (basic rhythm, treble and bass clef, major and minor), giving you a well rounded approach to mastering the piano. She's a brilliant instructor. Her attention to detail, and my specific needs as a singer are what make her a true vocal trainer. Though she's delicate and soft spoken, she doesn't let you get away with ANYTHING that needs to be addressed.

ELENA D.

Tarzana, CA

I teach children and adults using a singing technique drawn from the Bel Canto Tradition and tailored to fit more modern styles of music with emphasis on posture, muscle relaxation and breathing technique among fun and interesting vocal exercises!

About ELENA

Hello!
Music is my life and my biggest passion. I've been a working musician and a teacher for several years and there's nothing more rewarding than sharing all I've learned so far with my students, to nurture their goals and aspirations and to make them aware of the great instrument they already possess. Every year I plan and host two wonderful recitals for my students, so that they can experience and share their progress with family and friends.

Here's more about me and my education:
I was born and raised in Italy and have been singing since I was a child but started a formal training d
uring my teenage years with a private coach. During college, while studying Psychology at the University of Florence, I attended 2 different private music schools in Florence and Bologna, since it was not possible at the time to study music in College. There I kept studying vocal technique, solfege, classical guitar and music harmony.
I moved to LA 11 years ago and attended Musician's Institute earning a diploma in Vocal Studies and Vocal Performance and then I attended a Composition & Songwriting Program at UCLA for 2 years. I refined my vocal technique studying at Berkley College of Music for a summertime in a special program for Jazz Vocalists and I have been an Alexander Technique's student for now 10+ years.
I am a performing artist, I sing and teach privately for a living and, on the side, I help an Opera Touring company promote their tours. I have performed all over the country in some beautiful venues such as the Getty Center and Pantages Theater to name a few. Guitar is my second instrument but I accompany students with my piano during vocal exercises. My personal style of singing is modern, not operatic, I love many kinds of music but especially pop, jazz, and musical theater.

***Lessons Details***

**Singing: Teaching Adults**
There are two sides of singing that I like to work on with my students.
The first is vocal technique, which is first and foremost the study of how to use our instrument, our whole body, in the best and most useful way to avoid strain ad create beautiful sounds. I believe that when we relax and use the right posture, meaning the most natural one, then our bodies and our breathing mechanisms act as they are supposed to, and singing magically happens at its best. When we learn to use our bodies without strain, the right "singing" muscles are automatically engaged and exercised and we feel at ease. So I try to encourage a non-forceful way to use diaphragmatic breathing, which I have learned by studying Alexander Technique, which is a technique that teaches people how to stop using unnecessary levels of muscular and mental tension during any activity, especially during an artistic performance of any kind.
I try to notice bad singing habits the student may have formed throughout his/her life, (hopefully none!), and gently help them correct them. The vocal exercises I use are drawn from the Bel Canto tradition, a classical tradition, but I mix them with more modern vocal exercises to develop popular techniques like "belting" for example.
The second side of singing is simply to pay attention to song interpretation, to convey the message we would like to convey. I encourage the student to choose songs to work on they truly love, and I welcome any style of music. I give the students vocal exercises CDs to help them practice at home.

**Singing: Teaching Children**
What I described above is also true for teaching children, however I like to teach them "by ear" with simple vocal exercises and vocal games at the beginning of the lesson and try to ease them into the sound they naturally make. I like to create a positive environment in which the student can feel successful about even small achievements, whether it is standing in a relaxed way or having practiced the beginning of an exercise or part of a song. To help the student practice at home and keep the motivation alive without feeling overwhelmed I record each lesson (or let them record it) and give them the accompaniment for the song of their choice so they can have fun at home.

*** GUITAR ***
I teach young children using fun songs, games and classical guitar technique. I also teach adults and specialize in contemporary guitar. I welcome many styles of music, pop, rock as well as folk genres of Latin America. I emphasize good posture, tone and musicality, and always a high level of enjoyment with the process!

*** RECITALS ***
I plan and host 2 wonderful Recitals a year, one in January and one in June. I encourage all my students to participate, no matter how they may feel about their instrument level and preparation. Working towards a performance is one of the most effective ways to solidify your ever growing skill!

*** Studio Equipment ***
For students who come to my home studio, there is private guest parking right outside my building, in a gated complex of buildings and in a safe neighborhood just north of the 101. My studio is conveniently located just a few blocks from the freeway entrance. I have a comfortable sofa for parents and siblings to attend the lessons and a keyboard to use for accompaniment. Also, I periodically offer my students the chance to record one song in my studio, equipped with nice microphones and a professional recording system.

*** Travel Equipment ***
For singing lessons I bring my small and light master-keyboard and laptop or I can use the student piano/keyboard. For children's lesson I ask my students to bring a notebook to keep track of practice assignments.

*** Specialties ***
Music theory and Songwriting. Stage performance and how to feel comfortable on stage. Additionally I teach vocal jazz improvisation, Broadway singing and Italian song repertoire.
