I have wanted to work with Jan since I saw her as a judge at the LAMN JAM Music Contests, her feedback to the artists was always spot on and I wanted to hear what she might have to say about my work and her suggestions. I have been lucky enough to have taken lessons and workshops with Jan for a couple months now and it has definitely had a big impact on my confidence as well as making me aware of what I need to work on. It is great to put yourself in a situation where a professional will be honest with you and help give you the tools to better your performance, this is exactly what I get out of working with Jan. You can sing out as much as you want, but listeners, friends and family usually just tell you how great you are and its hard to grow that way. Jan is kind but straightforward on what you need to do to better yourself as a performer. I highly recommend studying with Jan!

I love to sing it´s just fun for me and it makes me happy. But I´m not a singer and don´t even want to go up on stage. I´m trying to be a songwriter and I was just visiting a workshop at the songwriting school of LA. And on this evening I met Jan the first time. At the moment I´m travelling and I never thought that I would stay in one city that long. But at this evening when Jan made this workshop I swear you guys, I hadn´t laugh that much for a long time. When she asked me if I´d like to come to the class I just had to say yes. It was a heart decision and I don´t regret it! This woman is a very talented singing teacher and also songwriter with a lot of experience, for sure. But she´s much more than that because you can have a REALLY bad week or day, but the second you walk into that class this woman saves your day! She´s just so funny! Every week I´m looking forward to that day. Of course the most people only want to learn how to sing or to perform but I think it´s also important to feel comfortable and accepted. And she gives everyone the feeling of being accepted and she takes care of every student. And just to be clear, of course it´s not all about fun and of course you´ll learn A LOT. I just want to say that you´ll be enjoying it to learn from her ;) Thank you Jan

I had the pleasure of attending Jan's "Acting for Singer/Songwriters" class at The Songwriting School of Los Angeles. A door opened for me. I became more courageous. It was a process. And I am forever grateful to Jan for helping me uncover more of my soul's voice.

Toni K.

Canoga Park, CA

Technique lays the ground work for proficiency in any instrument. The voice is no different. I teach breathing, placement, ear training and harmony. That said, I focus my coaching on the power of authentic story telling using movement and acting exercises to build artistic skill.

About Toni

Just a couple of seasons ago one of my amazing students, Juliana Chahayed made top 40 on American Idol! 2 of my students recently made it through two rounds of The Voice. 12 of my students sang on the Grammy Award nominated "Hurry Up, We're Dreaming" by M83. My students have also gotten into top music programs at Berklee College of Music, NYU, USC, Brandeis and Cal State University Northridge; won 1st prize in the high school talent show and money prizes in community singing contests. My singers have sung the Star Spangle Banner at Staples Center for a Clipper's game and produced success
ful showcases in the LA area. My story starts a while back: As a singer/songwriter my experiences singing live from Bud Friedman's Improv to the Disneyland Hotel and in studios all across Los Angeles eventually took me to Europe where I landed in Brussels and recorded an album for Sony Records/Belgium which produced three radio hits in the 90's. I also recorded and/or wrote jingles for Coca Cola, Fanta, Schwepes, Fisher Price and more! Fluent in French, when I moved back to the states I taught at Lycee International de Los Angeles for 12 years where I developed a music program for their 4 campuses, teaching K through 12, including commendations from everyone from French President Sarkozy to Los Angeles Councilman Tom LeBonge. I've recorded 6 children's CD's and recently directed and arranged background vocals for renown French singer and actress Charlotte Gainsbourg. In my private practice I have prepared and developed singers for live performance, personal development and for the rigors of auditioning process. And we always have fun!!

*** Lesson Details ***
Learn to play the voice! I have developed my own special brand of singing lessons using breathing and placement techniques to provide the tools you need to develop as a vocalist and help you make the choices of an artist. How do you want to tell your story? My lessons will help you build confidence and every lesson will bring you a new piece of understanding and practical know-how. You will work hard, play hard, build a repertoire, and make tangible improvements in every single lesson! Success breeds success. If you want to audition for The Voice or simply enjoy the applause at karaoke night, I can bring you closer to your goal. I can also include beginning piano which can only add to your skills including an understanding of music vocabulary and the basic mechanics of music theory.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Music Room, and recording studio, piano, guitars, computer and cd, ipod docs. Parents are welcome to stay for lessons or run to close-by Starbucks, Costco or Home Depot!

*** Travel Equipment ***
I use a piano to teach both voice and beginning piano.

*** Specialties ***
I use solfege, breathing and placement techniques filtered through an emphasis on real world performance skills. Helping the student build confidence is probably one of the teachers' most important roles. Creating a safe environment is key to keeping the lesson fun, productive and challenging. Every single student should leave every single lesson with a tangible feeling of progress.

We have been absolutely thrilled with the results that we've seen in our two boys' abilities since working with Toni for the past year and a half. They are both in their high school's show choir and we couldn't be happier with this year's accomplishments. Our freshman earned major solos in his group's competition set and has also earned a spot in next year's Advanced Show Choir group which mostly consists of seniors. As far as our senior son, Toni helped him with his confidence in his singing ability, and helped him secure a solo in his final show choir performance. He also joined a band with his friends and was more than thrilled to be selected as the front man.
We asked our boys if they wanted to take a break for the summer, they both said "No" and that they wanted to continue with Toni throughout their summer vacation.
Thank you Toni - you're simply the best!

Toni is the single most amazing teacher and person I have ever had the pleasure of coming across. In the months that I have been taking lessons, not only has my singing improved, but also my confidence. She made me realize that the voice is an instrument and is teaching me exactly how to use it. If you want to improve and learn all while having the pleasure of being with an amazing person, then Toni is perfect for you. She definitely is perfect for me and all her other students!

Carmen has been teaching music for 10 years to children and adults, from age 4 to 50. She is able to teach many genres of music to all levels of musicianship, whether beginner or advanced, whether they want to learn Mozart or Coldplay, Aretha Franklin or Joni Mitchell . Her style of teaching utilizes the classical approach of theory and sight reading, but MOST IMPORTANTLY allows the student to explore the instrument freely while also achieving good musicianship. Having fun while honing the craft is the way to an enduring love of playing and is a principle she always uses in her lessons.

C
armen has a special gift with very young children; she is able to keep children interested, engaged, inspired and challenged. She has a patience with children that is extraordinary because she believes strongly in the ability of music to enrich children's lives in all areas and seeks to cultivate that within the child.

She teaches skills and techniques for practicing that are useful for musicians through out their lifetime. Carmen also knows exactly what it takes to make a student a professional who is ready for studio session work, live band performances, live improvisations, auditions or creating their own music. She understands the desire and drive behind wanting to create with music and emphasizes certain key aspects that can make musicians proficient in any genre when practiced

At 8 she began to study the art form and teach herself music. She started studying with teachers at age 11. After learning voice, piano and cello followed. While studying classical techniques, she also taught herself other genres of music which enabled her to play, record and perform with musicians of almost every genre by 19.

Carmen has been taught and trained by many professional working musicians of impressive musical carrer heights Her former opera/ vocal coach Shonie Lebie attended The Julliard School on a full scholarship before going on to The Metropolitan Opera House. Piano teacher Shoshana Ben Horin, a graduate of Prague Conservatory of Music and concert pianist, toured all of Europe before instructing Carmen in piano. Carmen has learned cello and other string instruments from professional working musicians here in Los Angeles.

I am a classically trained singer, with experience singing solo, in choirs, and in professional opera companies. Within the first few lessons, you'll learn the fundamentals of vocal technique and as time goes on you'll be performance ready. I specialize in teaching healthy vocal technique, applicable to all styles of singing, from pop to Broadway to opera. Come discover your voice!

About Sheila

I have earned a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from the University of Redlands. As a professional singer, I have performed in numerous concerts and operas. I've sung in both choral and solo settings, as well as fully staged productions. Throughout my education, I have played piano and even participated in Certificate of Merit testing. These experiences have all helped shape me into a well rounded singer.

In lessons, I devote equal amounts of time to technique and repertoire. We will always begin by warming up, and working on some exercises. Then we will implement your new tec

Above all, though, I want to help you realize your dreams as a musician! Looking forward to getting started!

Learn to sing correctly using the best techniques in the world. I studied voice with Robert Austin at USD and Richard Nichol in San Francisco in the Garcia-Marcheisse Institute. I have over 35 years of on-stage performance including Opera performances, Broadway Style Musicals, Sacred Oratorios as well as Intimate opera dinner gatherings. From Soloist at St. Mary's Cathedral in San Francisco to entertainer at corporate events with over 5,000 in attendance. After taking $30,000 in voice lessons I have now written my own "How to sing correctly" training manual.

About Daniel

I am willing to travel to you all over San Diego, Orange and Los Angeles Counties. Music should be fun and lessons should focus on what you want to do with your improved abilities. Some students want to sing better in school choir or musical programs. Some are trying to sing or play guitar for Church or Synagogue. Others have their eye on Disney careers, rock/pop bands, in short being professionals. What is your dream? I will help you move closer to reaching that dream!!! I am a graduate of USD with a B.A. in Philosophy. I also hold a Masters degree, Teaching Credential Curriculum fr
om Chapman University, Doctoral Studies at Catholic University of America in Washington D.C. I studied voice, guitar and piano classes beginning in grade school, high school, college and post-graduate training as well. I studied voice in San Diego with Robert Austin, in San Francisco with Richard Nichol in the Garcia-Marchesi Institute. I sang with the Palm Beach Florida Opera Company. I am a tenor with a 3.5 octave range. I also sang and performed in Musicals and Operas and Sacred Oratorios from Maui to Florida. I teach voice (beginner to professional levels) and guitar (acoustic and electric: beginners to Intermediate). I have been teaching private lessons for 7 years. My daughter has taken lessons with at least 5 other voice teachers over the past 4 years, and Daniel is by far the best fit. He is encouraging and knowledgeable. The difference between a song we think she has down, and the song after she works on it with Daniel is just amazing. She wants to sing and play bass professionally, so we tap into Daniel's expertise about the music industry and bring songs for auditions, solos, performances, etc. to him with no advance warning and he teaches her how to approach them. He consciously expands her range on the low side as well as high side. Most importantly, he is very professional, kind and supportive about life, not just in music. And, of course, there is his amazing voice that can shake our house if we ask him to sing something!

It's a common misconception that singers and instrumentalists are two completely different types of musicians. They're actually much more alike than you might think!
