Jill G.

Roslindale, MA

About Jill

I've been in and around music all my life. I started violin at age 5, part of the first generation of Suzuki violinists in the United States. I've loved being a professional violinist and violin teacher for over 30 years! And I've also founded and directed three community music schools in Newburyport, Boston, and Manhattan.

I hold Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Violin Performance, and I'm lucky to have had wonderful experiences during my formal training! In my undergraduate years, I was awarded a full 4-year scholarship for string quartet and chamber music playing, which was invaluabl
e as a real-world training. In graduate school, I was fortunate to learn so much as a Teaching Assistant for undergraduate violin students.

I have also been an innovator in musical education, and I've felt honored to coach numerous already gifted violin teachers who have sought me out to improve their techniques for best teaching practices. From my 30+ years of private violin teaching and observing how children learn, I developed a super fun groundbreaking class in New York City for 2.5 to 5 year old beginners called Crackerjack Kidz! And a few years ago, I wrote a text to accompany young students and their families.

I continuously work to be a master teacher dedicated to the very best methods, using a variety and combination of techniques and strategies tailored to the student's musical success and enjoyment.

My specialties include music-based early childhood development, adult beginners and continuing learners, intermediate and advanced players, and chamber music coaching.

I welcome you to start your family's musical journey with me!

*** Lesson Details ***
While each lesson is different, we always try to spend a little time warming up, making sure we're comfortable and free of tension, reviewing what we've worked on, and layering in new concepts each time. We also learn age appropriate music theory (the "why's" of how music works), we exercise our imaginations, and we learn how to effectively practice.

We learn to think, solve problems, hear the music in our minds, and coordinate our bodies to play beautifully! Along the way we learn skills for life, the joy of accomplishment, and love of ourselves and others!

Whether you're a toddler or a senior, violin can always teach new things and help students appreciate more about themselves and the world!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Music room with keyboard and computer. Parents can sit it on lessons, and are enouraged to do so with young students.

*** Specialties ***
I'm a classically trained violinist and a master teacher with over 30 years of experience. I've been teaching Suzuki violin to children ages 3 and up for my whole career, and I'm also extremely comfortable with traditional methods for beginner, intermediate, and advanced students of any age.

My specialties include:
music-based early childhood development
adult beginners and continuing learners
intermediate and advanced players
chamber music coaching.

I immediately felt comfortable with Jill. She is so patient, kind, and supportive. As a first-time student of the violin, I feel incredibly lucky to have found such an invaluable resource as her. I will most definitely be signing on for future lessons with her.

My first lesson in many many years! You may as well say I was a beginner. As an adult learner, I need a type of instruction that will leave me motivated to continue and Jill was just PERFECT. Knowledgeable, patient, she uses tricks and techniques to facilitate learning. I learned so much in just the first lesson. I am very motivated to continue and to get to a point where I can actually play!

Shawn M.

West Roxbury, MA

About Shawn

Hello! I am a professional working drummer with over 20 years of performing and teaching experience. My current band, Eight To The Bar, has been the winner of Best Band Connecticut for the past 5 years straight. We perform internationally in many venues, including festivals, casinos, and concert halls. The repertoire is diverse and challenging, drawing on the traditions of R&B, Swing and Motown.

*** Lesson Details ***
Lessons with me will be fun and constructive. I gear my lesson plan to your individual needs with a strong focus on fundamental technique, proper grip and stroke as well as
helping you find your balance and relaxation behind the kit through posture and ergonomic set- up.

We will be able to explore the techniques of your favorite drummers. Through my wide range of experience I will be able to give you the skills necessary to function within your favorite genre of music. At the same time, I may introduce you to some forms of music less familiar to you. You can then use that experience to bring a fresh approach to your chosen style.

The name of the game is time-keeping and time feel. You will be expected to practice with a metronome, but also with recorded tracks. We will record your playing and listen back. This is one of the best ways to improve your playing.

Double bass and/or double pedal also taught as well as left foot clave, Latin percussion, piano, and music theory.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Two drum sets, full PA, fender rhodes piano, congas, timbales and hand percussion, frame drums, bongos, DVD player, audio recording capabilities. Parents can sit in on lesson.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can bring a practice pad set to the student's home. Metronome, ipod, some lesson handouts, and occasionally DVD's will also be brought.

*** Specialties ***
All styles and levels: rock, jazz, Latin, percussion as applied to drumset. Reading, time feel, counting and singing

Micah G.

Boston, MA

About Micah

I began playing the Piano at age 4, the Bassoon at age 11, and have been teaching students since I was 17. I recently graduated from the Eastman School of Music and began attending New England Conservatory for my masters degree this fall. I enjoy teaching students of all ages and skill levels, whether you are a beginner or a more advanced student looking to improve. A basic curriculum includes general performance skills, simple music theory and history, as well as music appreciation including exposure to new repertoire.ย  Each facet is intended to create well-rounded, self-sufficient musicia
ns and individuals.

I believe that each studentโ€™s instruction should be as unique as their personality. From serious to silly, I like to gauge my teaching style on the personality of each student and what they come to lessons hoping to accomplish.ย  Whether you are seeking to enjoy a new skill, engage in rigorous classical study, or anything in between, I can help you reach your goals!

Singing
Heather and I are colleagues at the Boston Conservatory's graduate music program, and as a fellow instructor I would highly recommend her to anyone seeking voice lessons. Heather is not only a skilled vocalist, but she is very personable and fun to be around; she's the kind of teacher to help students feel at ease and encouraged. I have enjoyed working with her.
