Kira H.

Long Island City, NY

I can teach up to intermediate violists via the Suzuki method up to about book 7.

About Kira

I graduated from Mannes College of Music with a BS in violin performance and a minor in psychology. While at Mannes, I was a student of Sally Thomas (Julliard School), and other primary teachers include Claudia Schaer, Amy Barlowe and Oscar Ravina. I have performed at every major concert hall in New York City, including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Weill Recital Hall, and Symphony Space. My performance schedule has also led me to solo appearances with the Rockland Summer Institute festival orchestra.

My past chamber music coaches include Ann Setzer, Peter Prosser, Chin Kim, Gena Raps
, and members of both the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra and NY Philharmonic. I have also participated in masterclasses with Cho-Liang Lin, Pamela Frank, and Ida Kavafian. I am also a graduate of the Mannes Pre-College division Honors program and alumna of both the New York Youth Symphony and Meadowmount School of Music.

Currently, I am a registered teacher with the Suzuki Association of America and have completed Suzuki teacher training for books 1 - 8 at NYC's School for Strings, where I trained with Ekaterina Gerson and Allen Lieb. I have also completed additional violin and viola pedagogy studies with Ann Setzer of the Julliard School. My students have been accepted to performing arts high schools such as Laguardia Highschool School for the Performing Arts and now perform with ensembles such as Chicago University's Chamber Orchestra.

In addition, I completed both Music Mind Games Units 1 & 2 teacher training with Michiko Yurko in 2012. I incorporate this fun way of learning how to read and understand music theory into all of my lessons.

I have been teaching privately for over 10 years, and look forward to continuing to enrich other peoples' lives through music for years to come.

*** Lesson Details ***
I generally try to tailor my teaching approach based on a student's individual goals with a strong emphasis on proper violin technique. I have the most experience teaching using the Suzuki method, but also utilize more traditional approaches in order to address the developmental level of my pupil. I expect my students to come in with a positive attitude, willingness to learn, and strong work ethic.

With students 7 years of age and younger, I strongly recommend that a parent take lessons for 6 weeks prior to their child beginning instruction. I also insist that parents sit in on their child's lessons and take notes. This enables parents to properly supervise their child's practice, which ultimately leads to speedier progress and a better grasp of the material being taught.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Separate dedicated violin studio in apartment with piano.

I do own three cats (Nami, Spork, and Pancakes), so please let me know if this is a problem!

*** Travel Equipment ***
I ask that my students please speak to me prior to purchasing or renting an instrument.

Following the first violin lesson, I expect my student to provide their instrument (I can provide a list of resources and rental companies for instruments), a notebook, any music books assigned, a music stand, and a metronome.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in classical playing and prefer teaching using the Suzuki method. I am currently registered with the Suzuki Association of America. I am also flexible enough to assist a student seeking to branch out, and for those not interested in Suzuki, I am also able to teach via more traditional methods. Additionally, I have an extensive educational background in music theory, I am also able to take those students interested in taking beginning to intermediate viola lessons.

Kira is an absolute gem! My daughter is a novice and Kira's teaching method was so "in tune" to her getting the best learning experience. My daughter is very enthusiastic about her violin lessons that she can't wait till her next lesson! Thank you Kira for being the best instructor ever!!

Very caring and talented instructor.

My daughter and I have been taking lessons from Kira for a little over a year, we couldn't be happier! We are learning by way of the Suzuki Method. My daughter was five when we started.
Kira is adept at explaining things in ways we can both understand. She is very intuitive and switches up the lessons to keep my daughter excited and engaged. We consider her a gem of a teacher, a rare find.

Erin E.

Brooklyn, NY

I teach Suzuki method and traditional viola. I absolutely love the viola and enjoy teaching beginners, people who have already studied, and violinist converts!

About Erin

I fell in love with the violin at age seven under the instruction of Natalie Colbert at E. Rivers Elementary School in Atlanta, GA. I studied violin through high school and college, and received a BA in Communications with a Minor in Music from Georgia State University.

After a lifelong study of the violin, I began to play the viola as a happy accident. As an undergraduate student in college, my chamber music group needed a violist to play the Schubert Trout Quintet. Never one to turn down a challenge, I jumped right in and never looked back, and have played viola in addition to violin eve
r since.

I'm eager and enthusiastic to share my knowledge of music. I am passionate about enabling students to express themselves through music. I teach students of all ages, but particularly love working with kids. My lessons are filled with fun and games!

I am an active member of the Suzuki Association of the Americas, the American String Teachers Association, and The Chamber Music Network. I completed my first unit of Suzuki teacher training with Carrie Reuning-Hummel, Units 2 and 3 with Judy Bossuat-Gallic, and will continue with Unit 4 in 2015. I currently play violin in the Brooklyn Symphony, and play both violin and viola in chamber music groups.

Erin is the Best!! I have started taking lessons again as an adult and Erin is just as excited as I am as I become familiar once again with my instrument. In a nutshell- it is so much fun and a highlight after my long work week. I can't wait until my son is old enough to play. I have no doubt that she is awesome with kids.

I am 43 and started my first musical instrument experience with Concetta, with no background and knowledge of music theory at all. Needless to say how challenging it was at first, but with her dedication, professionalism and friendly approach, I made a significant progress in about 7 months. I am so happy to have Concetta as my violin teacher and would definitely recommend her.

Concetta was such a treat to have in our home! She came out all the way from NY to NJ for my mothers birthday, and though she is a beginner, emerged from the 1 hour lesson so inspired to keep practicing, able to fully complete her first song! She even did a little performance at the end on the lesson! She is a great people person, fun to talk to, and she really knows her stuff. Excellent choice!

I have learned more in just three lessons with Concetta than I learned after three months of once a week lessons with an instructor from a music store.

Concetta has a natural gift to teach and an ability to allow even a musical novice, like me, understand basic music theory.

This talented young lady eat, sleeps and breathes music.

Maria B.

Brooklyn, NY

I've been playing violin and viola since I was 4 years old. I had a classical training at the Kharkov Conservatory in Ukraine. And now I've been teaching viola for over 10 years, working with students of all levels of experience and all ages. Training my students in classical, jazz, pop and country music and manner of playing, dependently on a student's goal and taste. I can also accompany my students playing the piano, or playing viola or violin duets with them. And I guarantee: my lessons are always no pressure but fun with quick and serious results. My goal is for my students to feel real results even after the first lesson. I can also assist with preparation for any kind of performance/audition, recording process, touring, working on original repertoire. I'm looking forward to meeting you and helping you to achieve your goals and dreams!:)

About Maria

Hi! I am a conservatory trained singer, violinist, pianist and composer, trained in classical, jazz and popular music at the Kharkov Conservatory in Ukraine and at the Russian Academy of Music in Moscow.
By Thumbtack research I'm called #2 in the 10 Best Music Instructors in New York in 2015. I have over 10 years of experience in music education and have worked with students of all levels of experience and all ages. Over these years I've been developing using my own personalized approach to every individual student, as well as a uniquely designed program that gives a student the best opportu
nity to reach their specific goals, while developing basic music skills and increasing overall creativity and intelligence.
My goal is for my students to feel real results even after just the first lesson. With bigger gains being noticed by the end of the first month, including improvement of pitch accuracy, improved tone quality, an increase of their overall range, and even helping students find their own individual style and manner. I can assist with preparation for any kind of performance/audition, recording process, touring. I also use a special technique to reanimate a student's voice after oversinging (a tired voice) or any after-sickness effects (weak, dull voice, or even no voice at all).
I try to incorporate basic piano and songwriting. Especially in cases where a student wants to also be able to accompany themselves or build their own original music repertoire - this can be one of the most important criteria for students whose goals include being signed by a label. I have worked with many successful recording and performing artists (including Diana Ross's daughter - Rhonda Ross), children of Hollywood celebrities - like Graham King, and students of the Manhattan School of Music.. I will be happy to assist you in achieving your dreams and goals in this exciting music journey!

I also work at a major Brooklyn Recording Studio as a music producer, arranger and composer. I write and record live orchestral instrumentations, program extensive electronic accompaniment in both, Logic and Ableton Live… as well as work as a session musician, recording piano, violin and vocals for various artists.

I have performed internationally at venues all over Europe, North America and South America. I have also recently collaborated with the Grammy award winning composer/pianist Fernando Otero on the album “RITUAL”, on which I was the featured vocalist.

I've been coming to Maria for violin lessons for almost a year and a half and she is the best thing that could ever have happened to me! She is a true musician and a very good coach, with a perfect balance of patience, pushing me to do my best, and working with me to find technique solutions that work best for me specifically. She is also kind and cheerful and an absolute joy to be around, and has worked with me on voice and music theory when I needed that as well. I would never go to anyone else for violin lessons and I highly recommend her.

Augusta L.

New York, NY

AI have been playing the violin for 20 years, and I've studied with world-renowned teachers across the globe; at Oberlin Conservatory, Indiana University, Moscow Central Special School, and Juilliard. I have a passion for teaching and have been doing so since 2008. I teach privately but also have experience with group settings in an elementary school. I'm happy and comfortable teaching all levels of students, in violin, viola, piano, and voice! I use a combination of my own method, Suzuki, and String Pedagogy IU.

About Augusta

Education goals:
I believe students, no matter the age, background, or means, can achieve great music making and enjoy a fun and satisfactory journey doing so. I am experienced in using Suzuki, Indiana String Pedagogy, some Kodaly, and my own method, to foster this learning. I have been teaching children ages 5-18, and adult students, for almost ten years now. Working at Fairview Elementary gave me a great introduction to group teaching in a classroom, which I hope to soon be able to build upon. I also have experience tutoring college students at the Oberlin Conservatory in music theory,
ear training, and German. Teaching truly is a life-long passion of mine.

BIOGRAPHY:
Augusta is an emerging classical and baroque violinist, performing internationally as both soloist and orchestral musician. She was winner of the 2014 Indianapolis Baroque Orchestra Concerto Competition, and semifinalist in the 2014 Musica Antiqua International Competition in Bruges, Belgium. She will begin studies at The Juilliard School in the Fall of 2015 for baroque violin, as proud recipient of a Kovner Fellowship. Recent highlights include a performance as chamber musician with members of the Cleveland Baroque Orchestra, Apollo's Fire, in their Bach Family Frolic concert series in January 2015.
In the 2015-2016 season, Augusta will perform as concerto soloist with the Indianapolis Baroque Orchestra, with the Bach A minor Violin Concerto. Augusta performs as an apprentice with Apollo's Fire and is a substitute violinist with Boston Baroque. Augusta taught violin to my 7 year old daughter for a semester through the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music in Bloomington, Indiana. As my daughter took lessons for three years, we had many teachers, but Augusta was the very best. She so naturally connected with my daugher and brought out the very best of her abilities. Augusta possesses the two necessary traits of an exceptional teacher that can't be learned but must be in one's heart - passion for subject matter and love of one's students. Augusta embodies these traits and so much more.

I recommend Augusta without reservation and wish her the very best of luck!
