About Michael

I have been involved in music all of my life. As a child I played trumpet in band and sang in school and church choirs. My favorite movies were musicals and they still are my favorite. Music was my major in college, which included singing, dancing, acting and playing musical instruments. I like all types of music. As a school teacher, I taught 3rd. grade through high school, everything from band and choir to musical theater. I also taught private students, of all ages, piano, guitar, voice and most of the wind instruments.

*** Lesson Details ***
My students can expect to learn the basics
of music theory, such as melody, harmony, key signature and rhythm. I want my students to have fun by learning the kind of music they like best while learning to appreciate the kind of music that will develop their musical skills. Piano books like John Schaum and guitar books like Mel Bay's Guitar Method are good books to learn to read music and learn the proper way to play your instrument. Scale exercises are important for instrumental, as well as, vocal students. I use a practice log and CD-DVD recordings of my students so they can see and hear their progress. At the end of 6 months I want my students to play their favorite songs in 3 different keys. C, G and F Major.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Designated music room: Two keyboards, guitars, sound equipment, PA system, computers, seating for parents (he encourages it!)

*** Travel Equipment ***
Students need their own inst. I have one of every inst. to demo. except piano and guitar which I have 2 of each.

*** Specialties ***
Open-minded to all music. I specialize in performance. I help my students with their look, as well as, their sound. I know how to bring out the best in my students.

We couldn't be happier with Michael. His passion and expertise are what you'd want from a teacher (clarinet + guitar), but beyond this, he's a kind, patient man who really took the effort to reach my son outside of just the lesson. This made a huge difference when it comes to keeping my son engaged.

Considering lessons? Go with Michael.

Michael is simply awesome. My son has been through lessons before, but they neer inspired him to practice or take his clarinet seriously. Michael's joy and interest not just in music, but in who Justice is, has made a big difference. Thanks, Michael!

Music/Performing Arts Tutoring:
I can prepare you for recitals, competitions, a musical career or just to learn for fun! I have a pretty laid back teaching style. Not only do I make sure that you can perform well but I also make sure you know the history of what you are performing and what it means to you. I allow my students to choose most of the music they want to play, as long as it's in their ability. I am also happy to rearrange the music so it might be easier for you to play and/or understand. It is very important that my students have goals and we work towards achieving them. I give small homework assignments so that you can reach your goals with ease. I put a lot of importance of family involvement in learning and performance. I have a monthly recital with all my students. I also offer free MP3 recordings so my students can track their performance audibly!

Academic Tutoring:
Struggling in class? Need help writing a paper? Have a difficult test coming up? I am happy to help. It's important to attend all tutoring session and on time. If you need to cancel, please call and let me know. I'm happy to attend classes if you need me to. I will have you set goals and I expects you to stick with them. Your success is my success.

ALL AGES AND LEVELS ARE WELCOME!

Sebastopol, CA

I like to teach the student the music that they want to learn. Every student is unique, not only in their abilities and learning styles, but in what they want to achieve, and even why they want to take lessons in the first place.

There are three primary areas in which I would like to see every student improve: Musicality, Technique, and Repertoire. Depending on a student's needs and desires, one of these might receive more or less emphasis (and lesson time) than the others. However, I strive to help my students continually improve in all three areas.

While many teachers have a particular method with which they are comfortable, teaching all of their students out of the same set of books, I prefer to approach the teaching of each student separately. I strive to design an individualized lesson plan for each and every student, helping them develop the specific skills they require while playing the music they love!

The first lesson is primarily spent discussing your musical goals and getting a feel for your current level of experience. By the end of the first lesson, you will have a few songs and/or exercises to practice. After your first lesson, I will prepare material based on your personal strengths and weaknesses. And if you specify some songs that you would like to learn, I will transcribe them and be ready to help you learn them at your next lesson!

Miles has not only helped me learn piano, he has introduced me to a ton of great music I had never heard before. He has been very patient and encouraging with me, and he has helped me get over my fear of playing in front of other people. Miles is an excellent, inspiring teacher!

I started taking piano lessons from Miles a year ago as a complete beginner. He's taught me how to read music, play classical music, and play a few rock and blues songs as well! My favorite part of the lesson is when I get to improvise while Miles plays with me. The lessons are always so fun and inspiring.

Hi, I'm 9 years-old and I think Ruth is very nice!!!!! She understands how you can sometimes feel uncomfortable, and she puts me at ease. I'd say that once you've had 3 lessons with her you'd feel completely comfortable with her. But I was comfortable with her at 2!! She teaches you how to sing in a healthy way, and teaches you how to take care of your vocal cords. Long story short, if you take her class you will love it!!!

Ruth is a consummate voice teacher. I went through many other teachers around whom I felt uncomfortable. She is extremely sensitive. She listens carefully to your voice, your feelings, and to how your body feels. I have been able to do amazing things vocally that I only dreamed of previously. She also understands so many styles, including early music, folk, opera, and Broadway. Right now we are working on a Monteverdi solo with lots of ornamentation.

5 Excellent Sight Reading Exercises for Singers
Unless you're a career-chorister, the concept of sight reading music is probably going to at best make you slightly nervous, and at worst paralyze you with fright. Sight reading comes easier to some singers than others, but it's not some mythical task akin to retrieving a golden fleece; sight-reading, even for the more able, is a learned skill, and there are several sig
