Holly T.

Seattle, WA

I primarily teach a blend of West African dances and hip-hop. I began teaching in 2012 and have worked in Seattle area gyms and have traveled to Southern Mexico to teach as well.

My dance curriculum is built on teaching a strong basic step and fundamentals of rhythms in music. My main goal is to provide a safe and fun environment for students to express themselves through movement.

About Holly

I am an enthusiastic musician with a talent for teaching. I have worked as a voice and piano teacher in Seattle for eight years. I was employed at The West Side Music Academy for over three years and am currently working on a Bachelors in Music Education at Seattle Pacific University. I am a huge believer in being a lifelong student! I have continued my music education throughout my adult life and have studied Jazz, Opera, Pop, Rock, Reggae, Blues, Soul, and Folk. As a pianist I began individual instruction at age 14, and have studied Jazz with Darius Willrich, Ryan Burns, Dan Kramlich and Mar
k Samson.

I began singing and playing piano at age 5. I have been involved in school and church choirs including The Total Experience Gospel Choir, Seattle Pacific University Women's Choir, and The Spokane Area Children's Chorus. Musical productions include Grease, Once Upon a Mattress, Chicago, and Les Miserables. I have been a featured soloist in ensembles throughout my life. I also performed in the Jazz Ensemble at Seattle Central Community College for three years as a vocalist and pianist.

I have an extensive background as a performer in small and large bands in the Seattle area. I have played in various venues throughout the area including Benaroya Hall, McCall Hall, Tula's Nightclub, and the Nectar Lounge to name a few. I have also worked as a studio musician with various electronic music producers and bands.

I also study and teach West African dance and have traveled to Guinea, Conakry to study dance and music with Les Ballets African a premier African dance ensemble that tours the world. I also spent the summer of 2012 working with a non-profit organization in Chiapas, Mexico teaching music and dance to kids k-12 in the Indigenous Village of Ignacio Allende.

*** Lesson Details ***
As your teacher I can help you thrive in music. I promise to provide a fun learning experience with lots of laughs and smiles. My number one goal is to help build a love and passion for music and boost student's confidence. I understand and appreciate different levels of experience and make sure to cater the lesson to the individual. Whether my students are young or old; whether they view voice or piano lessons as a just-for-fun hobby; or whether they wish to pursue a serious music career - I am happy to facilitate all of this and more, as we work together to reach their goals.

My musical foundation is one built on proper technique and strong musicianship skills. Students will learn proper posturing, breathing, and vocal production- in addition to reading and music notation, music theory and more. As students master these techniques I will work to help them bring out their own voice and creative expression. We will explore music from a variety of genres including Jazz, Classical, Pop/Rock, and more. Each of my students will be able to perform in ways that are not only healthy and technically sound but unique to them.

*** Studio Equipment ***
In the studio I have an acoustic upright piano, shakers, tambourines, and a library of music books. The studio is also used for dance lessons and has hardwood floors and mirrors. There is also a waiting room area for parents to sit and listen in during lessons.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I provide books, metronome, and keyboard stand. Students are expected to have a piano or keyboard.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in Jazz, Classical, Pop, Rock, RnB, and Broadway style singing. I use an eclectic approach to teaching.

Holly turns the frustrations of learning the piano into fun. I highly recommend her as a teacher. Her instruction has greatly enhanced my enjoyment of trying to learn to play the piano as an adult. She is active in instruction, giving an excellent demonstration of the material and sometimes singing along. When she is enjoying herself teaching, I can't help but enjoy learning. She ensures that whatever is being learned, is mastered before proceeding. She gives clear directions as to what I should practice next, and even loaned out a book she though I might enjoy. I did.

Krista J.

Renton, WA

About Krista

Hello! Thanks for checking out my page! My name is Krista, and I'm a musical theatre actress and teacher. I grew up in Renton and attended the University of Washington, where I earned my BA in Theatre and a minor in Education. Since then, I have gone on to perform in many of Seattle's best theatres, including Seattle Musical Theatre, Lyric Light Opera, At the Ridge Theatre, Second Story Repertory, and The 5th Avenue. I love performing and believe that there is nothing like being onstage and making an audience feel something through your performance!

I have been teaching for many years
at various theatre intensives and summer camps and currently teach dance, acting, and voice at two schools in the Renton area. I love people and love interacting with all ages! It is a joy to be able to pass on skills that bring me so much happiness to those who are younger or just entering the exciting world of performance! I especially enjoy doing one-on-one audition prep to make sure that that monologue or song you are going to try out with is in solid shape!

Please contact me to let me know what kind of training you are looking for (whether it be a focus on dance, audition prep, voice, etc.), and we can talk about what our lessons would entail and how I could help to best meet your interests. Looking forward to hearing from you!

Betty K.

Bellevue, WA

About Betty

PLEASE NOTE: I DO teach children, I'm not going to pay $20 that this site asks of me to do a background check in order to get minor clients! My day job is a nanny, of course my background is clean. See here for my nanny profile:

I'm a well-rounded dancer who has studied disciplines including African, breakdance, hip hop, modern, bellydance, capoeira, yoga, and house dance since 2006. I focus on the ability to "listen" and hence enhance your musicality as a dancer. Having trained in massage therapy, I am also good at studying your body patte
rns and help you work on changing dysfunctional body patterns so that you look and feel good when you dance. So many teachers just try to teach their own style without acknowledging the students' physical and mental qualities and limitations. I will honor your body and mind while building/increasing your dance vocabulary. I am able to help you become a great freestyle dancer who can dance to any kind of music.

My expertise is in house dance, a club- and social- dance that has roots in breakdance, jazz, ballet, African, and tap. It is done to house music, which matches the beat of the human heart and so is the most soothing yet invigorating form of dance music. It is often confused with hip hop and breakdancing, and while they do overlap, they are separate genres in the urban/street dance world.

A brief outline of my experience in House:
-Workshop with Meech from France, winner of Juste Debout House category
-Studied with Ritchie Ramirez of Culture Shock LA
-Workshop with Jojo Diggs of Soulshifters
-Classes with Lyanne Brooks of Soulgasm Hawaii/Housing Project 360
-Boston house scene 2007
-LA house scene 2008
-Culture Shock San Diego: Monday Night Love House Sessions 2008
-Assisted in National Dance Week Hawaii 2011 which hosted legendary Ejoe Wilson
-Organizer of the first House Dance Workshop on Maui, Hawaii 2011
-Organizer of House & Experimental Dance Seattle FB group 2011-2012

With time, you will be comfortable and proud dancing at night clubs, which often play house music, or wherever your heart desires!

I also teach hip hop to beginners in a way that is natural and non-intimidating. I have a huge music selection which includes child-friendly hip hop music! I am a mother myself and have worked with children and teens for a long time. When selecting a teacher for your child, her character is of utmost importance, and I am that person who your child can not only learn dance from, but look up to as a role model :)

I can provide lessons near my location at a free public venue (ie. park, community center), or at your location at a rented or free space.

My experience is outlined below:

International District Hip Hop Day Organizer 2004; 40 youth in attendance
3-Day Hip Hop Empowerment Workshop Facilitator 2004 Hualien, Taiwan
Aboriginal Youth Dance Movement Counselor & Instructor 2006 Hualien, Taiwan
Work-study at Dance Complex 2007 Cambridge, MA
Cleaned studio space & assisted with yard work in exchange of classes
Improvisational Modern Dance Performer 2007, Berkeley College of Music, Boston
Theatre of the Oppressed workshop participant 2008, Taipei, Taiwan
Debbie Allen Dance Studio Admissions Assistant 2008 Los Angeles, CA
Assisted Director of Admissions with student affairs in high-profile commercial studio
Kruciaal Element Dance Troupe Dancer 2008-2009 San Diego, CA
Seattle Festival of Dance Improvisation participant 2010 Seattle, WA
House Dance Workshop Organizer 2010 Maui, Hawaii
Battlezone Hip Hop Category Entrant 2011 Vancouver, BC
Seattle House & Experimental Dance Facebook group Organizer 2011-2012

I was an excellent student in elementary school, always among the top of the class and I earned straight A's in 2nd, 5th and 6th grades. I have work experience in Taiwan, 2 years in social services, 1 year in organizing, and 1 year in administrative and translation/writing.

I found Jean to be very engaging and helpful, she was always willing to explain errors to me until I was actually able to understand what I did wrong. She not only helped me address the problems I had with the SAT, but also any anxiety behind it. Now I feel calmer and more prepared to face the SAT!

Good dancers can make even the most complicated, strenuous techniques look effortless and fluid.
