Glynis D.

Long Beach, CA

I have been taking singing lessons since I was 7 years old and understand the importance of developing a solid technique. I majored in jazz voice in college but am versed in all styles. Singing to me is the expression of the soul and I love to help others develop their voice.

About Glynis

Glynis has been reading music since before she knew how to read words. Her mother started teaching her piano lessons at age 3, and she started taking voice lessons at age 7. She learned from an early age to practice every day. She has taught all levels and ages of piano and voice for many years. Glynis specializes in jazz voice, but has a very strong classical and musical theatre background. She is an arranger, composer, educator, and singer. She received her AA in Professional Music from SWCC, school for music vocations, then got her BA in Jazz Studies, Vocal Performance at CSU Sacramento. She is currently working on her Masters in Jazz Studies, Vocal Performance at the Bob Cole Conservatory inside of CSU Long Beach. While studying she is the Graduate Assistant for Christine Guter, and ...

Thank you so much for teaching my son with so much professionalism and knowledge of music. He's playing piano beautifully because you've taken the time to help him expand and understand music.

I would like to share a YouTube video link of David's first gospel performance at a kids convention.

We Love Mr. Joe!!!

Joe is very patient with my daughter. He truly wants her to learn and understand what she is learning and most of all to enjoy music. He goes at her pace while still encouraging her to set goals for herself. He will not move forward until she has mastered what she has learned.

Mr. Joe's passion for music reflects in his teaching!!

Music teacher that motivates his students.

My daughter has taken group and individual music lessons with Jose for three years. He is a teacher that meets students at their instructional level and motivates them to give their best effort in their learning. He also encourages my daughter with singing; he gives her vocal lessons in addition to guitar and piano. Jose also offers my daughter a safe learning environment. As a parent of a teenager, I greatly appreciate his patience with my daughter.

Samara is great with our daughter. She recommends songs that our daughter likes and she asks my daughter to choose songs that she likes. She sings along with her when necessary to help her find the right notes and plays piano beautifully. Our daughter looks forward to the lessons with Samara.

As Samara's colleague at UCSD, I had the privilege of collaborating with her on various musical projects and observing her composition process from start to finish. She's a creative, talented and ambitious musician who is familiar with various musical instruments and techniques. More than that, she is a dedicated educator: she has extensive knowledge of musical pedagogy and is always looking for opportunities for further professional development. I highly recommend her for students of all levels!

Our daughter took voice and piano lessons with Samara for about 6 months in San Diego. She had never had lessons before but within that short time fame our daughter learned and progressed at an unbelievable pace.

Samara is patient and extremely talented with her gifts as well as with children. Our daughter thoroughly enjoyed all her lessons with Samara and we were definitely sad to see her go.

About Carl

During your first lesson I do a computer analysis of your voice, I find out what your goals are in singing, what your favorite kinds of music are, and I take you in the direction you want to go and show you how to get there in the shortest possible time. Think you're the only one who feels that terrifying nervousness? Most everyone does, including the biggest stars. I've written a book about it entitled, "How To Conquer Nervousness For Singers", and I'll teach you to not only handle it, but to direct its energy into your singing, making your performance soar. I've also written, "How To Get Standing Ovations For Singers" to teach you to drive your audience to their feet for a standing ovation. You will like Carl as your instructor. He is an expert at what he does, especially voice analysis with techniques to better any singing voice. He knows from A to Z what needs to be done to correct and improve, and this he imparts with specific instructions, coupled with lots of encouragement. He has generously worked with both my husband (a very good voice) and me (a bit of the ordinary) and we have always been satisfied with his professionalism and love of the art. Thanks, Carl.

I'm a guitarist for fun in a 3-piece band with a couple of my friends. We've had some difficulty securing a singer to jam with us so I figured that I would give it a shot.

Upon discovering TakeLessons.com, I found Carl's page and immediately decided to book lessons with him. What a fantastic decision that was! He's an excellent instructor and will assist you in becoming the best singer you can be. In particular, he emphasizes finding your own, unique voice, as opposed to imitating others; this alone was invaluable advice for a singing novice such as myself.

Highly recommended!

Got my first computer diagnosis of my singing voice and what a blast. Carl used it as a basis to show me what my tongue, soft palate, lips, and jaw do when I'm singing really well. He's my fourth singing teacher, and my best.

My daughter has taken voice lessons with a previous teacher before (not from Take Lessons). Everything with Athena is completely different, however my daughter's singing has developed greatly. My daughters is already projecting more and she has become able to sing loudly and clearly. I am very pleased with my daughters lessons and I would highly recommend Athena to others!

What Are the Best Songs to Sing to Show Off Your Vocal Range?

Less publicly, but equally common, are singers who wrong-foot themselves with inappropriate repertoire at local singing competitions and music festivals. They might pick
