Glynis D. Long Beach, CA

I have been taking singing lessons since I was 7 years old and understand the importance of developing a solid technique. I majored in jazz voice in college but am versed in all styles. Singing to me is the expression of the soul and I love to help others develop their voice.

About Glynis

Glynis has been reading music since before she knew how to read words. Her mother started teaching her piano lessons at age 3, and she started taking voice lessons at age 7. She learned from an early age to practice every day. She has taught all levels and ages of piano and voice for many years. Glynis specializes in jazz voice, but has a very strong classical and musical theatre background. She is an arranger, composer, educator, and singer. She received her AA in Professional Music from SWCC, school for music vocations, then got her BA in Jazz Studies, Vocal Performance at CSU Sacramento. She is currently working on her Masters in Jazz Studies, Vocal Performance at the Bob Cole Conservatory inside of CSU Long Beach. While studying she is the Graduate Assistant for Christine Guter, and ...

We Love Mr. Joe!!!

Joe is very patient with my daughter. He truly wants her to learn and understand what she is learning and most of all to enjoy music. He goes at her pace while still encouraging her to set goals for herself. He will not move forward until she has mastered what she has learned.

Mr. Joe's passion for music reflects in his teaching!!

Music teacher that motivates his students.

My daughter has taken group and individual music lessons with Jose for three years. He is a teacher that meets students at their instructional level and motivates them to give their best effort in their learning. He also encourages my daughter with singing; he gives her vocal lessons in addition to guitar and piano. Jose also offers my daughter a safe learning environment. As a parent of a teenager, I greatly appreciate his patience with my daughter.

Samara is great with our daughter. She recommends songs that our daughter likes and she asks my daughter to choose songs that she likes. She sings along with her when necessary to help her find the right notes and plays piano beautifully. Our daughter looks forward to the lessons with Samara.

As Samara's colleague at UCSD, I had the privilege of collaborating with her on various musical projects and observing her composition process from start to finish. She's a creative, talented and ambitious musician who is familiar with various musical instruments and techniques. More than that, she is a dedicated educator: she has extensive knowledge of musical pedagogy and is always looking for opportunities for further professional development. I highly recommend her for students of all levels!

Our daughter took voice and piano lessons with Samara for about 6 months in San Diego. She had never had lessons before but within that short time fame our daughter learned and progressed at an unbelievable pace.

Samara is patient and extremely talented with her gifts as well as with children. Our daughter thoroughly enjoyed all her lessons with Samara and we were definitely sad to see her go.

My daughter has taken voice lessons with a previous teacher before (not from Take Lessons). Everything with Athena is completely different, however my daughter's singing has developed greatly. My daughters is already projecting more and she has become able to sing loudly and clearly. I am very pleased with my daughters lessons and I would highly recommend Athena to others!

Athena has been extremely helpful and understanding about the physical impediments regarding my lessons (arthritis, or something like it). She is also great at giving me tools to figure things out for myself. She encourages rather than discourages, and helps motivate you by making the things you are interested in a part of the program. So far I am very happy with her and feel like I might actually be able to make this happen.
Shannon K. Cerritos, CA

I hold a master's in vocal performance from Cal State University, Fullerton and a Bachelor's in vocal performance from USC. I've been teaching voice for over 13 years. As a classical singer, I've had professional experience doing lead roles with various performing groups. This has taught me the level of expertise which is required in the real world of singing. In teaching singing, I focus on a breath-based technique where we focus on technical exercises designed to help you breathe more efficiently. We also work a lot on proper vowel formation and strive to eliminate excessive tension in your vocal instrument. Last but not least, we work on interpreting the music (musical phrasing, pronunciation, subtext). My goal is to help you become the best performer you can be. I encourage singers to take part in 2 studio recitals a year as well as various evaluations and competitions, depending on your own personal goals. I am a member of National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) and ...

About Shannon

I hold a master's in voice from CSUF and a double bachelor's in piano and voice from USC. With over 13 years of experience as a private voice and piano instructor I have had the privilege of helping many students achieve their musical goals. As a member of MTAC and NATS, I enter many students in Certificate of Merit, Student Evaluation Program, and other festivals. For pianists, I work on songs, scales, theory, ear training and sometimes improvisation. For singers, we work on a breath-based breathing technique and songs that reinforce good singing habits but that are also engaging for the singer. We also work on sight singing and theory.Though my training is mostly in classical music, I do work on other styles with my students. *** Lesson Details *** For pianists, I recommend the ...

Lessons with Shannon was probably the best choice I have ever made :) I had no prior vocal trainings and did not understand even the breathing techniques of singing. But she has been super patient with me and has helped me improve in a span of a month (of course practicing a lot on my own time too). Thanks Shannon!!!!

Kirsten H. Long Beach, CA

I would like to work with students who singing for a hobby who would like to develop their voice in a healthy manner, and understand how to use their voice as an instrument and as a musician. I also would like to work with students who are interested in having a career in singing or music education in singing, to start them on the path of proper training.

About Kirsten

I am currently a student of classical voice and music history at California State University, Long Beach. I have four years of training in classical voice and participation as an ensemble singer for concert choirs, chamber ensembles and vocal jazz. While my main area of singing is in the classical styles, I enjoy singing and learning in the pop and jazz genres in my spare time, as well. I am open to learning and teaching all styles of music. My education in musicology and ethnomusicology has opened me up to the various musical styles around the world which I find captivating, and would love to be involved in educating others about them.
