Hello there! I am a former instructor for the Junior Appalachian Musicians program, teacher at the Mountain Music School, and a Luthier of twenty years. I like to emphasize the fun and magic in music, these lessons shouldn't be a source of stress, rather a source of joy! Each lesson is tailored to the student, and will move at a pace comfortable to the student. I have spent two decades playing a large swathe of music, though I gravitate towards old time banjo and classical guitar.
I am a music lover first and foremost, my roots are in mountain music, clawhammer banjo specifically. That music captured me from an early age and I hit the ground running with it. Though it didn't take long before I picked up other genres and instruments. Classical guitar quickly became one of my f

I can help you play by ear, as well as read music. Really, they both help each other out.
Typically lessons start with a warm-up or exercise, which usually relates to a concept in the songs or pieces we study in the lesson. Lessons can vary based on student goals and approach. For example, an advanced classical lesson might target specific spots in larger pieces, while a jazz/pop lesson might deal with hand positioning for chords and ear training. In a beginning lesson, we focus on either finding patterns on the piano that are used in most chord progressions or melodies, or music literacy, depending on the student's preference.
I am a professional singer who has proficiencies in piano, organ, choral directing, musical analysis, and ear training/playing by ear. I currently teach college non-majors, and specialize in teaching adult beginning students.

The voice is our first instrument, and accordingly, our most natural one to express the creative impulses of our soul. However, there are several challenges we need to overcome in order to make it really shine.
The first is that we hear our own voice differently than others hear it - from "inside our head." So it takes some practice to learn different ways of hearing ourselves. The second challenge is that most music doesn't happen in isolation, but with other people's involvement. So unless you plan to sing "a capella" (without instrumental accompaniment) and just for your own enjoyment, you need to learn how to relate what you sing to other sounds. This requires a good deal of practice and it is certainly easier with the help of a skilled teacher to help you learn not only what to listen for, but how to control your voice to make it do what you want.
Then there are technical refinements like breath control, articulation, intonation, projection, resonance, ear training, etc.

I can help you learn how to read and notate music, even if you have never tried before! If reading chord symbols is more your style, I can help you understand chord-scale theory to make you a quick and accurate reader of lead sheets and chord-lyric sheets. I received rigorous training in jazz and classical music theory at the Jacobs School of Music and can offer a wide variety of resources to students wishing to delve into more advanced topics such as figured bass or jazz harmony, especially following the methods laid out by David Baker and George Russell.
I hold a degree in Jazz Studies from the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University. During my time as a student, I focused on becoming an adaptable bass player in many forms of modern music and in cross-cultural music exchange, thanks to the tutelage of Latin Jazz giants Michael Spiro and Wayne W

Is very knowledgeable about playing the cello and the techniques that are needed to become a better player. Enjoyed my lesson. Thank you."
I started taking guitar lessons with Richie having no previous experience with playing an instrument or reading music. Being left handed I was having difficulty making sense of the beginner guitar books and thought I'd give personal lessons a try.
Richie quickly taught me the basics of guitar and how to read music. Over the last 2-1/2 years he has helped me overcome my lack of rhythm, has taught me music theory, how to structure songs and techniques of soloing in various scales.
I've enjoyed getting out in my spare time and watching Richie perform in his acoustic and blues bands and have developed a new appreciation of music.
I now practice/play daily for enjoyment and only wish that my job wasn't taking me away from this area. Otherwise, I would be continuing my lessons with Richie for years to come."
