About Sara
Hello, and welcome to my page! I am a classically trained singer from Columbia, SC. I have also taught and performed in Southern California, Boston, and the greater Charlotte area. My philosophy is that anyone can learn to sing; just like any other instrument, all it takes is determination and practice. I welcome all levels and ages of aspiring vocalists. I am also open to all genres, from opera to rock! The goal of my lessons is to help singers feel confident with their vocal technique and to feel joy in sharing their gifts.

In addition to singing, I also teach beginner piano, music theory, audition prep, and ear-training.

About Marissa
My name is Marissa, and I come to the music studio with a passion for teaching students of all ages and needs. My education and training has taken me from Phoenix, AZ where I grew up to Greenville, SC where I received both an undergraduate degree in Music Education and a master's degree in Performance. While in Greenville from 2007-2014, I took many choral tours and led both adult choirs and childrens choirs. I often enjoyed performing for local children's CD recordings. I currently sing in a nationally acclaimed community choir, The Rivertree Singers, who perform regularly in and around the Greenville area. It was also my privilege to train a young member of the American Boy Choir and accompany for him in 2011. It was in Orlando, FL that I decided to build my own studio through Takelessons, and I enjoyed every minute of it! In August of
2016, my family moved back to South Carolina to be near family. After a brief hiatus of enjoying motherhood, I am excited to be back with Takelessons and to have the opportunity to work with talented students here in South Carolina!

Lessons with me are always conducted in the utmost professional way, and I come to the studio with a desire to teach not only music, but the love of music. I love music and want my students to love it too! I use illustrations and examples to make abstract ideas more concrete. Students are encouraged to explore their voice and piano skills in each of their lessons and during their practice time. I challenge my students to do their best and try to find the balance between keeping them inspired and pushing them to do their best!

My son really enjoyed his lesson and said Marissa was very funny. She was also very responsive to my request.

We had a great lesson. As the first lesson, Marissa took time to get to know my daughter and understand her background. She kept the lesson well paced. My daughter thought Mrs. V was both nice, and funny as they worked through the lesson.

Marissa is a wonderful instructor. She listens to her students and works with them to find material that is fun and engaging but also challenging. She provides constructive criticism when needed, and always quick to praise a job well done.

About Calvin
As a classically trained violist with orchestral, chamber, and solo performance experience, my teaching style is geared towards performance and expression. I don't adhere to any one book of teaching, adjusting my teaching to the unique needs of each student. My teachers came from different pedagogical backgrounds; as a result, I have a wide array of teaching tools available to pass on to my students. I have taught with El Sistema Colorado, the Longy School of Music's El Sistema program, and had a Teaching Artist residence with Cambridge Public Schools. Currently pursuing my DMA in Viola Performance from the University of South Carolina, I hold a BM in Viola performance from the Lamont School of Music and a MM in Viola Performance from the Longy School of Music.

I have played viola since I first began my musical studies at age 9. As a r
esult, I have seen teachers hold viola students back, simply because they play the "lesser" instrument in the viola family. I do not hold my students back and I hold them all to the same high level of playing, regardless of which instrument they play.

I live in the beautiful state of South Carolina, where I attended the University of South Carolina and graduated in music education (choral) with a vocal performance certificate. I have been teaching privately since 2003, and have worked in various music positions, including choir director for schools, churches, and community choirs; organist; and pianist.

I am also a successful composer, primarily of sacred vocal works, which have been performed internationally, including known performances in the United States, England, Brazil, and Madagascar.

My most recent musical venture is my You Tube channel, "The Singing School," which focuses on vocal exercises.

Beyond music, I love spending time with my husband and kids, and I love all things water - going to the beach and kayaking on the lake are some of my particular favorite pastime

About Arindam
I was a middle school STEM teacher for two years, so for me patience is key! Everyone learns at a different pace and in different ways. My goal is to help you grow in any way that I can so that you are set up for success!

STEM:
I have a bachelors degree in Biochemistry, studied for and took the MCAT, and taught 6-7th grade math and science for two years. I have had many research opportunities and have applied my knowledge of biology and chemistry in various different experiences. Science and math can be very tricky, but their are tools to help you become more comfortable with the subjects you are struggling with.

Music:
I have a Bachelors degree in Music Composition and will be attending graduate school for composition in the fall. I am a contemporary composer with an extensive knowledge of music theory. I also have played trombon
e for 13 years in orchestras, bands, and chamber groups. I have experience with a wide variety of styles and techniques that encompass both Western and Eastern music.

Education is an incredible industry to be in; I have been lucky to have had many amazing teachers, mentors, and tutors help me in my life. Ultimately, I want to pay that back and help you since I now have the means to do so.

I look forward to meeting you!

Arindam has been teaching my son Science and Math since he was 10 years old. Now 16 years old, my son considers Arindam his mentor in addition to a friend. He is an accomplished Bowdoin College graduate, middle school STEM teacher, and has been tutoring students in science and math since in high school. Despite all of his accomplishments, he teaches with humility and kindness.

While he sets a high quality standard, my husband and I have seen how he works with my son's preferred learning style so that he can achieve his best. He is very patient. Most importantly, my son not only vastly improved his grades, but also his confidence.

Arindam is a very punctual, polite, and professional young man. He genuinely regards every person without condescension and wants you to work toward being your best. Above all he’s a real person that has greatly impressed us. We highly recommend him as a tutor!

About Lars
I've been studying guitar seriously since the end of my 14th year and quickly fell so in love with it that I knew very quickly that I'd go to school for it and play the instrument at a very high level, simply because I had a burning sensation within my heart that I had to or I'd never be satisfied. I've been teaching since I was 16 and have found that learning culminates in teaching, so for me it has been a great pleasure to guide others in the same field that I am so passionate about and thus to learn from my students in ways that are not possible when one is not a teacher.

I started with good old rock n' roll, beginning with Nirvana and heading back into the 60s to the likes of Hendrix, Zeppelin and more. I studied blues and then moved to jazz and classical and dabbled with flamenco and Indian music. Through it all I always had a stron
g attraction to metal and shredding and these genres became a big part of my musical expression and served as a synthesis for all the other styles I studied. In college I focused on classical guitar and even played the arch lute for a year and a half.

In 2016 I recorded an album of original metal music with my brother and we also released a 3 song EP of fully improvised metal, all in one take. You can listen to this music here and get a sense of my playing, though this only represents one dimension of my playing style: karmicashes.bandcamp.com/

I am a rising sophomore at Winthrop University, majoring in Music Performance with a concentration in the viola. During my freshmen year, I was Principal Viola in the Winthrop Symphony Orchestra and a member of the Eagles String Quartet. I am interested in minoring in Music Technology to learn studio work and hope to start my own studio. After college, I would like to travel the world playing in a symphony with my viola, Arlo, and my passion. I want to help as many people as possible through music, because I feel music is one of the best vessels towards healing. It’s medicine, therapy, happy times, sad times, and memories.
